Warren Sapp says Buccaneers will unveil new helmets

Buccaneers Panthers Football AP

NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp has been teasing some Buccaneers news which he was going to reveal on air Thursday.

(We were hoping the announcement was that he was filming a romantic comedy/buddy cop movie with Michael Strahan.)

This morning, he let the cat out of the bag, announcing on Twitter that his old team was getting a new helmet.

It apparently has a “#ChromeGrill,” which would be an interesting possibility, and possibly taking them back to something as garish as the old Creamsicle uniforms.

The team has added to the announcement, saying they’ll have a new logo as well, the first redesign for the team since 1997.

I thought the current uni’s were just fine.

Oh man, it’s Thursday? Dang, I musta slept straight through Tuesday & Wednesday…

  3. milkmandanimal says: Feb 18, 2014 10:35 AM

Nooooooo! The current uniforms are pretty awesome. Nice color scheme, love the little flag, like everything about them. Please don’t make them some garish monstrosity like the Jaguars multicolor helmets or whatever the hell it is the Titans are wearing these days.

And now PFT edits the article to change “tonight” into Thursday, just to make me look like a pillock.

    I’m onto you, Gantt.

The only team that thinks they can win a championship by changing unies.

TB Brass: “Hey, it worked last time.”

They should worry about putting a good product on the field instead of how much revenue they can make on some uniform revisions. Jeez…the Vikings change theirs like every other year…you see how well that’s worked.

This will be the NFL version of Oregon U.

  6. cajunaise says: Feb 18, 2014 10:39 AM

Something garish that won’t really help the team? It’s like Sapp’s post-playing career, personified in a helmet.

  7. thevikesarebest says: Feb 18, 2014 10:41 AM

    The vikings uniforms>everyone’s uniforms.

  8. ariani1985 says: Feb 18, 2014 10:44 AM

    Will chad Clifton approve?

  9. coloneldukelacross says: Feb 18, 2014 10:47 AM

I hope they bring back that swishing, winking fella they used to have. He was dreamy.

  10. liner1900 says: Feb 18, 2014 10:49 AM

A little pewter on the jersey would be nice. You think a team’s jersey would contain both primary colors.

  11. gor3hound says: Feb 18, 2014 10:51 AM

I love the actual logo, why do they want to change it?

  12. kd75 says: Feb 18, 2014 10:58 AM

    Bring back the orange creamsicles.

  13. chicagocane says: Feb 18, 2014 11:02 AM

haha…the Vikings unis are PURPLE! you need to head over to the kids section now and remove yourself from this discussion.

  14. leroysbutler says: Feb 18, 2014 11:03 AM

How much of a joke is this franchise when a clown like Sapp gives out the teams press releases.
    #HOFNot

As big of a circus the Bucs were this past season, I have to admit their jerseys, lettering and color scheme were among the finest in the league.

    It’s a shame they’re going fix what isn’t broken.

  16. Big Ant TV says: Feb 18, 2014 11:05 AM

in my russell wilson voice “WHY NOT”
BUT NO CREAMSICLE somthing more modern keep the jersey scheme just add more lets see what NIKE has in store

I work in the design biz, and I think the Bucs’ logo is pretty strong. It is especially strong when compared to the previous logo!

The only problem I have with the current logo is it has been associated with the last decade of mostly failure and ineptitude of the organization. But, hey, the Bucs winning a playoff game would shake that stench right off.

    Grasping

  20. kylexitron says: Feb 18, 2014 11:08 AM

Broncos update thier unis – championship. Same with pats same with bucs. Seattle updated theirs last season, champs a year later. Guess that means the jaguars will be Lombardi winners soon.

  21. justintuckrule says: Feb 18, 2014 11:24 AM

Good. This incarnation of their unis since 1997 has been abysmal. To the design guy…if you think these are good, you’re company should fire you.

  22. gjdodger2 says: Feb 18, 2014 11:26 AM

I’m thinking the logo will be a 50,000x magnification of a staphylococcus organism.

  23. bucrightoff says: Feb 18, 2014 11:26 AM

Unnecessary but of course this is about selling more jerseys than anything else.

  24. dallasbaby says: Feb 18, 2014 11:43 AM

Bring back the creamsicles and Bucco Bruce or I riot

  25. beardinals says: Feb 18, 2014 11:44 AM

Front/back two-tone? More of that, please!

    so are the ravens

  28. liner1900 says: Feb 18, 2014 12:10 PM

This will be the first team in NFC South history that won’t have black face masks.

  29. eagles512 says: Feb 18, 2014 12:11 PM

Should go back to the old white and orange

  30. liner1900 says: Feb 18, 2014 12:12 PM

…anything but a swishy winking pirate, please.

  31. liner1900 says: Feb 18, 2014 12:19 PM

Prediction: The facemasks will be red chrome or black chrome. The flag will be a metallic/chromey red to match the shiny facemasks.

The team is calling it a helmet and logo “enhancement”. Not expecting a major change.

  32. liner1900 says: Feb 18, 2014 12:21 PM

The helmet change CANNOT be a reaction to the new NFL rule that prevents the Bucs from wearing throw-backs. That rule came less than a year ago, and the league requires a 1-year notice on helmet & jersey changes.

  33. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Feb 18, 2014 12:39 PM

The Bucs had HORRIBLE uniforms in the Dreamsicle era — and fixed it in the Red/Orange/Pewter era.

Now they’re probably going to eff it up — like the Miami Dolphins did with their World League of American Football weirdness.

If it aint broke, don’t fix it.

And naturally Sapp is the one to seize the spotlight on this (or any other high profile topic).

  34. elliottcovert says: Feb 18, 2014 12:43 PM

I hope this is a better effort at journalism than his ill-fated attempt to out Jeremy Shockey as the leeker in the Saints Bounty scandal.

  35. chicagosports2014 says: Feb 18, 2014 12:53 PM

    Lovie making moves

  36. mrgroovesd says: Feb 18, 2014 1:08 PM

The Bucs now have one of the best uni’s in the NFL. Why change it? I understand updating some of it with some color hits here and there but not the logo!

  37. pmac26 says: Feb 18, 2014 1:20 PM

Perhaps they should put more time into who is wearing the uniforms, instead of changing the uniforms

  38. evilglazers666 says: Feb 18, 2014 1:35 PM

I hope this comes packaged with a new owner. Please!

  39. gbmickey says: Feb 18, 2014 1:36 PM

What a ace reporter Sapp has turned out to be.

  40. gbmickey says: Feb 18, 2014 1:40 PM

What’s funny about Viking fans is that their colors are associated with 50 years of futility and they are proud of it.

  41. falstaffsmind says: Feb 18, 2014 4:00 PM

Is it a Nike treatment? Flat helmets and animal skins?
