Another CFL player is heading south in pursuit of a career in the NFL.

In the case of linebacker Damaso Munoz, it’s way south. Munoz will be trying to make the jump from the Edmonton Eskimos to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a leap of several miles in both the literal and figurative sense.

Munoz spent the last three seasons in Edmonton and totaled 7 sacks in that span. He’s listed at 5-foot-11 and 219 pounds, so he’s decidedly on the small side for NFL linebackers. Adam Hayward, Jonathan Casillas and Dekoda Watson are all set to become free agents next month and any departures would open up competition for depth and special teams roles next season.

Munoz’s signing comes almost two months after the Buccaneers fired his college coach Greg Schiano. Munoz played 51 games for Schiano over four years at Rutgers and got the normally stern coach to giggle on the sideline after returning an onside kick for a touchdown in the 2009 St. Petersburg Bowl.

They’ve got to be hoping he can play safety at that size.

People are starting to realize there is athletic ability outside of college. Who would’ve thought?

Many talented players north of the border. GM’s are starting to realize this.

Damaso will love the weather change, so he’ll play his butt off.
