John Fox indicates Wes Welker won’t be going anywhere

foxwelker AP

The Broncos have a decision to make soon on receiver Wes Welker, who is due a $3 million bonus if he’s still on the roster in March. Considering Welker will turn 33 in May, is coming off a season in which he had two concussions, and didn’t have quite the same level of production in his first season in Denver as he had in his previous six seasons in New England, there have been some questions about whether the Broncos will pay Welker that bonus, or release him.

But when Broncos coach John Fox was asked that question at the Scouting Combine, he indicated that he doesn’t think there’s a tough decision to make at all: He expects Welker to remain in Denver for the second year of the two-year contract he signed in 2013.

“Wes Welker is under contract, so I don’t think it’s a tremendous decision,” Fox said.

There’s a good chance receiver Eric Decker will leave Denver in free agency, but with Welker returning alongside Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas, Peyton Manning will have three of his top four targets back this year.

Cutting Champ Bailey will take Broncos cap space from 14.9 million to 24.9 million. I think D Thomas extension and DRC contract are priorities for them.

As long as Manning only throws screens, it doesn’t matter who he’s tossing it to!

Welker may not have put up the same numbers he did in NE, but c’mon. He had like 10 straight games with a TD. He was still a beast and I’m sure Manning would love to have him back.

Wes Welker- short, bitter, unhappy, insecure and introverted.

Russell Wilson- short, charming, enthusiastic, beautiful and stoic.

I noticed Decker kind of disappeared in the playoffs. He was 6-111 in the 3 post season games. Welker on the other hand was 18-160. Yards per catch favor Decker but Welker showed up. Denver should be able to replace Decker since they still have Thomas, Thomas and Decker.

    Good.

In big games when Peyton’s not settled…Welker’s the guy that settle’s him.

Welker will be going to a nursing home if he gets thumped on the head a couple more times.

Prediction: they get bounced first round of playoffs next year

I like Welker, but it’s a bummer we’re keeping him at Decker’s expense

But if Eric Denver leaves, they’ll need to change the name of the city!

To the nfl gods who think fox should be fired, who will replace him? What coach is out there waiting to pick up where he left off? Fox has lead the broncos to 3 divional titles and 3 divisional rounds with one SB appereaance, if that’s not satisfying enough for you then you can jump off the wagon.

Who’s the QB behind Manning? Manning is done after this year, and all the Donks will have to show for it is a decimated cap and personnel.

  18. natelan69 says: Feb 21, 2014 2:31 AM

The Broncos are paying out the wazoo for Manning to pad his personal stats.

  19. natelan69 says: Feb 21, 2014 2:32 AM

Plummer, Cutler, Orton, Tebow, Manning… So much promise, so little return.

  20. natelan69 says: Feb 21, 2014 2:34 AM

Welker rocks and should do a great job of getting Manning his all-important personal stats for another year.

P.s… Worst beat down in Super Bowl history, lulz.

Welker is 0-3 in SB with Brady/P Manning as QB …. Dude is a curse

  22. continuity4ever says: Feb 21, 2014 2:49 PM

I’m very happy that Welker is staying. He manages to elude blocks a lot of the time, he’s a tough and gritty player and he can come through in the clutch. During the SB, along with Demarius, he had a strong game. I like Decker as well and wish he could stay a Bronco but he couldn’t seem to heighten his game for the SB. I know Sherman had a lot to do with that but Decker didn’t come through. Let’s use the money saved from Decker testing free agency to better equip the Defence or Offensive Line.

  23. continuity4ever says: Feb 21, 2014 2:58 PM

I need to be enlightened as to what a Head Coach actually does. According to Peyton, Gase is a great Offensive Coach, and I respect Peyton’s opinion, and I believe Del Rio did an excellent job given the depleted defence because of injuries…but if you listen the sound Fx captured during the SB, Fox made some stupid comments. What exactly does he do? I am not terribly impressed with him as a coach. Maybe Gase can be head coach at some point?

  24. Bronco$32&33 says: Feb 21, 2014 11:17 PM

As much as it pains me to say it I think Welkers best days are behind him. It would be a better idea to release him and go sign someone cheaper. I didn’t see much out of him this season that makes me think we couldn’t maintain our level of winning without him.

  25. jimmyjames65 says: Feb 22, 2014 9:45 AM

Manning missed his window of opportunity. Broncos will be a WC behind the Chiefs. They won’t be going to any SB’s in the near future.
