Marc Trestman: Our draft will focus on defense

The Bears spent last offseason adding pieces to their offensive line and they’ve already signed quarterback Jay Cutler to a new deal that will keep him running an offense populated with strong threats through the air and on the ground.

Now it is time to focus on the defense. That was the message from coach Marc Trestman during his Thursday press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine when he said that the team was planning to have a “defensive-oriented draft” after watching the unit struggle to stop anyone during the 2013 season.

Trestman didn’t get into too many specifics about what areas would be priority targets, saying that they are all “interconnected” and that the schemes they put in place will be determined largely by the players they have on hand this season. One move that Trestman was willing to discuss was one taking Shea McClellin to linebacker where he will compete for snaps on the strong side and in the middle of the defense.

There will certainly be more as the Bears try to restore their potency on that side of the ball. Trestman said “everything is on the table” when it comes to getting better, which should make for an interesting offseason for the Chicago defense.
