Steve Keim said Fitzgerald-to-Pats rumor was news to him

As offseason rumors go, the one that had the Patriots inquiring about Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was fascinating.

Especially to Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim.

When Keim was asked about the report Thursday, he said it came as news to him.

“I was trying to find someone to fire,” Keim said. “Because they never called me.”

Since then, the Cardinals restructured Fitzgerald’s deal, giving them another $9.4 million worth of cap space now.

Of course, that money has to be accounted for at some point, so Fitzgerald’s future will have to be addressed sooner rather than later, at which point someone might actually call.

When Fitz finally takes a pay cut next year in order to retire with the team, he will be a hero. Up to this point, all he’s done is take money up front instead of spread out.

He’s better than average but not a super star any more. His pay will need to start reflecting it. Soon.

He’s still a superstar – and if the Cards’ line can protect Palmer (as they did a better in the final eight games), his numbers can show it. With Michael Floyd emerging, Fitz’ role may shift from go-to to second option. Most teams should be so lucky…

Fitz is a beast still. Carson is probably the least mobile qb in da league next to Peyton, Cardinals Rnd1 pick didn’t play a snap last season. With him back and another this year Carson will be able to sling it with confidence.

So if he was trying to find someone to fire does that mean he was pissed no one relayed the interest to him?
