Mike McCarthy denies he wants smaller defensive linemen

The Packers need to make some changes on defense.

Those changes apparently don’t include getting smaller.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the suggestion the Packers want smaller defensive linemen is incorrect.

“I’ve never been part of conversation that you want your defensive line smaller,” McCarthy said. “That’s not accurate.”

Of course, the Packers could be in store for significant turnover up front regardless of size, with B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, Mike Neal and C.J. Wilson all set to become unrestricted free agents.

  1. Vikings fans rejoice – The Vikings once again are tied for the lead in the NFC North and are tied for a first round playoff bye and the chance for guaranteed home field throughout the playoffs.

  2. You know you cheer for a pretty good team when the worst insult any rival can hurl at you is, “your team makes the playoffs every year, but doesn’t win it all each time.”

  3. In related news, Minnesota missed the playoffs again and is thinking abou the next best player who they can send to Seattle for nothing.

  4. On a related note, the “genius” and MM both believe their oline-the sack/sive machine, will be just fine to protect Erin’s boo boo!

All teams are better in the NFC North with MM “in charge”.

    GO MM GO!!!!!!

  5. Hmm. Exit in the first round for the 5th year in a row. Vikings fans are amusing and have amnesia for the 1st round loss to the Pack in 2012.

  6. The Packers endured a first round loss only twice in the last five years, 2009 and 2013. 2010 was the SuperBowl year…hardly a loss. 2011 and 2012 were Divisional Round losses. And the Packers OWN THE VIKINGS. You left that part out.

  7. Green Bay needs linemen who can rush the passer and tackle running backs. With the list of characters listed in the article, the Packers can do neither. Give up a lot of yards on the ground and don’t get to the QB on passing downs? Can’t get off the feild on 3rd down? That is pretty much a recipe for failure in the playoffs.

  8. McCarthy was asked; “If you could make one change to your roster while assuring your dominance over the Vikings and still achieve major cost reductions, what would you do?”

    He replied; “Smaller defensive linemen.”

But of course it was taken out of context.

  9. I kind of doubt this idea came from anyone within the Packer organization.

“Know what we need? A smaller, more finesse defense. That will really help us win home playoff games in the cold and snow.”

Yeah, I just can’t picture that, either.

  10. What they need is lineman that can contribute. This year Raji and Pickett were brutal. It was always masked with “they are doing their job to occupy blockers”, but 20 tackles and no pressure can be put up by street FA’s.

Really of all the guys leaving it would be nice to keep Neal, but if he is acting in his own best interests he will go somewhere where he can play 4-3 DE.

Raji’s performance seems to have declined with his snap count. His stats looked productive when he was playing 90% of the defensive snaps, but once he was part of a more normal rotation he was pretty pedestrian.

  11. This year’s excuse for the Packers lousy defense is they don’t have the players to execute Dom Capers’ defense. Partly true. But they also are felled by incredible numbers of injuries(not Capers fault). But somewhere, somehow, Capers also needs to be held accountable. How can the defense keep getting worse and the DC not be held accountable?
