Mike McCarthy denies he wants smaller defensive linemen

The Packers need to make some changes on defense.

Those changes apparently don’t include getting smaller.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the suggestion the Packers want smaller defensive linemen is incorrect.

“I’ve never been part of conversation that you want your defensive line smaller,” McCarthy said. “That’s not accurate.”

Of course, the Packers could be in store for significant turnover up front regardless of size, with B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, Mike Neal and C.J. Wilson all set to become unrestricted free agents.

This probably originated from the bottom of the barrel Vikings because they want to sign whoever the Packers find not good enough to remain with the team.

Vikings fans rejoice – The Vikings once again are tied for the lead in the NFC North and are tied for a first round playoff bye and the chance for guaranteed home field throughout the playoffs.

Viking fans can talk a mean game!
Too bad their team can’t back it up!!
    Lol

You know you cheer for a pretty good team when the worst insult any rival can hurl at you is, “your team makes the playoffs every year, but doesn’t win it all each time.”

On a related note, the “genius” and MM both believe their oline-the sack/sive machine, will be just fine to protect Erin’s boo boo!

All teams are better in the NFC North with MM “in charge”.

    GO MM GO!!!!!!

My Vikings need to sign 2 or 3 of those guys. Our NFC North worst defense needs the help.

Joe Webb and Caleb Hanie are the only two QB’s Mike McCarthy has beaten in the playoffs since 2009.

Hmm. Exit in the first round for the 5th year in a row. Vikings fans are amusing and have amnesia for the 1st round loss to the Pack in 2012.

It was a conversation about “faster” probably.

    Or “smarter” maybe.

  18. stellarperformance says: Feb 21, 2014 12:11 PM

The Packers endured a first round loss only twice in the last five years, 2009 and 2013. 2010 was the SuperBowl year…hardly a loss. 2011 and 2012 were Divisional Round losses. And the Packers OWN THE VIKINGS. You left that part out.

  19. shlort says: Feb 21, 2014 12:15 PM

Green Bay needs linemen who can rush the passer and tackle running backs. With the list of characters listed in the article, the Packers can do neither. Give up a lot of yards on the ground and don’t get to the QB on passing downs? Can’t get off the feild on 3rd down? That is pretty much a recipe for failure in the playoffs.

  20. onbucky96 says: Feb 21, 2014 12:18 PM

To play DL in GB, you must be overweight, slow, injury-prone, unable to get off blocks, miss tackles, and be over-paid for level of production.

  21. scott46 says: Feb 21, 2014 12:19 PM

McCarthy has done a good job with the young talent Thompson gave him. Going to take impact and all pro free agents to get over the hump…

  22. djlexluger says: Feb 21, 2014 12:28 PM

Why are Viking fans so confident in a team that has done absolutely nothing.

  23. GenXJay says: Feb 21, 2014 12:34 PM

big, small, Big Mac could care less. Just as long the players are born w/o knuckles, injury prone, & are weaklings.

  24. stellarperformance says: Feb 21, 2014 12:43 PM

McCarthy was asked; “If you could make one change to your roster while assuring your dominance over the Vikings and still achieve major cost reductions, what would you do?”

    He replied; “Smaller defensive linemen.”

But of course it was taken out of context.

  25. trollhammer20 says: Feb 21, 2014 12:44 PM

I kind of doubt this idea came from anyone within the Packer organization.

“Know what we need? A smaller, more finesse defense. That will really help us win home playoff games in the cold and snow.”

Yeah, I just can’t picture that, either.

  26. judsonjr says: Feb 21, 2014 1:21 PM

What they need is lineman that can contribute. This year Raji and Pickett were brutal. It was always masked with “they are doing their job to occupy blockers”, but 20 tackles and no pressure can be put up by street FA’s.

Really of all the guys leaving it would be nice to keep Neal, but if he is acting in his own best interests he will go somewhere where he can play 4-3 DE.

Raji’s performance seems to have declined with his snap count. His stats looked productive when he was playing 90% of the defensive snaps, but once he was part of a more normal rotation he was pretty pedestrian.

  29. axespray says: Feb 21, 2014 4:50 PM

We need big guys that have Mike Daniel’s motor.

Dude was the only guy hustling on the defensive line last year (along with Boyd and Jolly).

  30. hodag54501 says: Feb 22, 2014 7:13 AM

This year’s excuse for the Packers lousy defense is they don’t have the players to execute Dom Capers’ defense. Partly true. But they also are felled by incredible numbers of injuries(not Capers fault). But somewhere, somehow, Capers also needs to be held accountable. How can the defense keep getting worse and the DC not be held accountable?
