Ozzie Newsome admits Ray Rice video “doesn’t look good”

Ozzie Newsome, Steve Bisciotti AP

Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome delivered perhaps the understatement of the Scouting Combine, when asked about running back Ray Rice.

Regarding the video that shows Rice dragging his unconscious fiance out of an elevator after an alleged altercation, Newsome said, “It doesn’t look good.”

As they say in the NFL, tape doesn’t lie.

But Newsome was also careful to point out that while it was “very concerning” but the Ravens wanted to continue to gather facts in the case before making any decisions about Rice.

Newsome also has the ability to fall back on the league for direction, as Rice will be reviewed under the league’s personal conduct policy.

After last year, I was glad he was on their team. Now I’m just glad he’s not on mine.

  2. alshonbrandontandem says: Feb 22, 2014 10:56 AM

Do the right thing Ozzie and cut him immediately. Any thing less and I lose all respect for you.

Oz must be watching last years game film.

  4. shartlos says: Feb 22, 2014 11:01 AM

They won’t cut him. They have no replacement and they will lose out money. Remember, “it’s a business”. They don’t care, and if they do take action it will be light, and only because the NFL cares about thier image. But this isn’t a new incident in the NFL. Just a new name

I can tell what Biscotti’s thinking in that pic:
“This guy has no idea what he’s doing – time to bring in one of my friends.”

Just another in a long line of classless ravens. Keep it classy Baltimore

How about you Steeler trolls go back under that rock you came out of? I realize that there is nothing good to say about those has-beens in Pittsburgh but the rest of uas can do without your insightful comments. You leap on any AFC North post and dirty the water with your scum.

  8. bigbenownsthenfl says: Feb 22, 2014 11:06 AM

i expect them to keep him. this team kept a murderer and numerous guys who slapped women and through bleach on them. reed, suggs and numerous others. a very classless organization with an awful fanbase. but really what can you do? not all franchises can be run as great as the steelers organization. classy from top to bottom! #ratbirdswishtheyhadsteelerstradition

So let me get this straight NFL, bully a grown man get ousted from the league. Knock out a woman on video tape, get a 4 game suspension. Seem right

  12. FoozieGrooler says: Feb 22, 2014 11:15 AM

When the Roethlisberger fiasco was in the news, you guys ran 10 hit-pieces a day for half a season.

This is only the 2nd fluff piece on Rice, who has videotape evidence against him, since Thursday.

    Why is that?

  13. dioxinblues says: Feb 22, 2014 11:25 AM

Do you think Herm Edwards would call Ray Rice a “distraction”?

  14. uglydingo says: Feb 22, 2014 11:40 AM

What’s the fuss about. Ray is a very classy guy in a very classy organization. It’s not like he killed her.
Commissioner Goodell needs to focus more on the verbal harassment in Miami.

  15. jimjets says: Feb 22, 2014 11:41 AM

Many players won’t or can’t accept Michael Sam but I guarantee rice gets a slap on the wrist for this and all is forgiven ASAP

  16. cruzan80 says: Feb 22, 2014 11:44 AM

Cut him. Aside from his terrible play last season, RB’s grow on trees. Makes no sense to keep one who might be on the decline anyway with now very ugly extra luggage too.

  17. ravensdominate says: Feb 22, 2014 11:56 AM

We are talking Rice when we should be talking Sharper…

  18. ravensdominate says: Feb 22, 2014 11:57 AM

    Ben Roethlisberger = Darren Sharper

It’s funny seeing Ratbird fans getting riled up.
God forbid anybody say something about their team, when they jump on other teams misfortunes.
Classy fans for a classy organization.

“As they say in the NFL, tape doesn’t lie.”

This creep should not be behind a facemask………he SHOULD be behind bars!

  22. quadya says: Feb 22, 2014 12:34 PM

Only in the NFL is it more of a crime to call a man names and make fun of his sister than to hit a woman. Where is the media outcry? How pathetic

  23. sirhulka says: Feb 22, 2014 12:43 PM

However, since he can run fast and carry a football, he will be given a slap on the wrist. Rice is just another example of an athlete who would be a low life without professional football.

  24. tvjules says: Feb 22, 2014 12:44 PM

What more than video evidence do they need? Don’t put this on the league. Man up. Cut him.

  25. bstngrdn says: Feb 22, 2014 12:51 PM

I think the elevator tape is not the damning one. All it shows is him trying to get an unresponsive woman off the elvator. What’s really important is how she got to that state. She could have just had too much to drink or she could have been knocked unconscious. What’s on the other tape needs to be looked at because depending on that evidence, the outcome can be vastly different.

  26. opneon says: Feb 22, 2014 12:52 PM

What Rice did is so sad, disappointing, and inexcusable. He deserves whatever he gets from the courts & the NFL…BUT…

the Ravens have a team mentality and I think they will stick by him until he has at least rehabbed himself or shown that he doesn’t care. I know they will take a bunch of crap from others, but wouldn’t YOU rather play for a TEAM than the Steelers…who would drop you on a dime? It makes Pbgh look better, but what about forgiveness and togetherness?

THAT’S the Ravens. Good or bad, they will take the heat for their guys.

  27. ichiganian says: Feb 22, 2014 12:53 PM

    ‘Ray’ + ‘Raven’ = Criminal

  28. FoozieGrooler says: Feb 22, 2014 12:54 PM

  29. timmons94 says: Feb 22, 2014 12:56 PM

from killers still looking for white suits, bleach throwers, women beaters to a fan base full of americas most wanted…stay class ratbirds

  30. timmons94 says: Feb 22, 2014 12:57 PM

ray ray calls out Hines Ward for a dui…..can u say Karma- u women beater…..really tough- fighting with a woman….once a Raven, always a Raven

  31. grogansheroes says: Feb 22, 2014 1:06 PM

If the Ravens don’t cut him then they lose any credibility they may still have. Ray Rice should be behind bars for battery. The Pats cut Hernandez as soon as they caught wind of what was going on, before an indictment, before all the evidence came to light. And everyone calls the Pats classless. Pats also took a cap hit of $15m.

  32. promickey says: Feb 22, 2014 1:13 PM

Ray Rice is strong enough, he should have thrown her over his shoulder. It just would have looked better……..

  33. meatcarroll says: Feb 22, 2014 1:15 PM

Still would rather have Ray Rice than Michael Sam on my 49ers!

  34. jtbsteeler says: Feb 22, 2014 2:42 PM

Ray Rice bumped his gums about Hines’ dui. Look at the Ratbird Terrible Towel karma biting you hard right now. Couldn’t have happened to a better person and organization.

Only Ratbird fans would make excuses for him even after learning there’s a video of him clobbering her. “what if she hit him first” Really?

Actually I want the Ravens to keep this guy. Your moral high ground and “class organization” claims will be stained and destroyed for decades to come.

    Ravens are done.

  35. steelcurtainn says: Feb 22, 2014 3:45 PM

It doesn’t look good…..Either does your football team Oz. Its going to be a long year for Baltimore. Let’s see if he has at least the decency to do the right thing and discipline his player. Don’t be a loser like Ray “I’ll knock you unconscious” Rice oz.

It would be fair to say you wouldn’t recognize an insightful comment if it was tattooed on the inside of your eye lid.

It seems you and others of your ilk are forgetting the fun you had at Tomlins expense not to long ago. Pull up your little kids britches and take some the heat you like to dish out.

my two cents. I am not going to defend Ray Rice for hitting his fiancee. there is no justifiable excuse. but do we have all the evidence yet. remember steeper fans, everyone in the world knew Ben was guilty. as far as the Ravens cutting him, that will more than likely be a business decision..same as the Steelers and every other team would have to make. remember…every team has their players in the police blotter at some point. for every rice Lewis suggs there is a Ben ward Harrison. and domestic violence is no time for gloating about how superior your team is

I would agree and disagree. Bens “guilt” was universal only in the ravens camp while Ray Lewis is a country wide thing.

What it’s time for is the Ravens and the NFL to do something at least as long as Bens punishment for an unconvinced offense. DropMyGirlWithOnePunch Ray Rice will be convicted if the vidoes are proven to exist of him knocking her out.

  39. timmons94 says: Feb 22, 2014 5:57 PM

i agree nofooldrool…lets be honest, i hope and pray no one likes talking about these guys and their bad behavior..BUt Rice calling out Ward then spitting on a player and this, doesn’t look good..
and the sickening thing is the Ravens saying they believe Ray’s side of the story. She or any other women who has been hit can do nothing to deserve getting hit..sorry, don’t care if cheating on u or any other thing. No women deserves to be hit…
and the Steelers did cut Rainey after he slapped his women.

Isn’t this how O.J. got started?

  41. classyjacklambert says: Feb 22, 2014 6:40 PM

    @ Scoobies

Everyone knew Ben was guilty… except anyone that actually paid any attention to the facts. That’s a completely different scenario then Ray Rice being on video hitting his fiance.

  42. joerevs300 says: Feb 22, 2014 7:04 PM

The Ravens have $5.5M reason to not cut Ray Rice.

As far as “replacement”, they need to replace their entire offensive line. That was the worst run blocking line in Ravens franchise history last season.

Look, you or I do this, we’re fired. And in jail. And likely convicted to do time.

Ray Rice is a Pro-Bowl, SB winning running back. As a professional athlete, he pretty much has to commit either rape or murder to get cut.

That’s just the way it is between the elite and the no-so-elite in our nation.

  43. enoughofthatalready says: Feb 22, 2014 7:45 PM

    Ben Roethlisberger = Darren Sharper

Why do Ravens trolls have to defend their punk players by bringing up Ben Roethlisberger? Everyone with an ounce of sense knows that Ben did not rape anyone. The woman in Las Vegas filed a civil case a year later after bragging to her friends about having sex with Ben and she wanted to have his baby. The woman in Georgia followed Ben around and teased him all night before following him into the bathroom. She went in after Ben went in first. Ben deserves wrath for being a doofus and putting himself in a bad situation and embarrassing his team. Ray Ruice deserves more since there is evidence of him knocking out this woman and the elevator footage afterwards is just plain bad. Ravens can now claim fame to the Bleacher, the Murderer and the Assaulter.

  44. bradygirl12 says: Feb 22, 2014 8:24 PM

When the actual assault tape is made public,we will see just how much of a man Ray Rice is. The result will probably be “not much”. There needs to be a zero tolerance policy on hitting women. He’s very lucky that he didn’t kill her.

  45. scoobies05 says: Feb 22, 2014 8:25 PM

and who among us of seen this video. and cutting Chris Rainey didn’t hurt the salary cap. finally, you don’t really believe that the only people who thought Ben was guilty live in Baltimore, do you

  46. scoobies05 says: Feb 22, 2014 8:58 PM

so jb. where is your criticism of ward and his dwi. or Ben for making his team look bad. or Harrison. or the pot head receiver. please don’t be so high and mighty because EVERY TEAM has players that get in trouble. what rice did is inexcusable and deserves punishment. but don’t act like 53 choir boys line up in Pittsburgh every year

    ====================================
Not everyone in the world knew Ben was guilty. That is why he wasn’t charged. As for Rice the police have already stated they have video of Rice hitting her in the elevator. That is why he was charged.

  48. steel2372 says: Feb 22, 2014 9:18 PM

    He is a classless player

  49. joestrummerlives says: Feb 22, 2014 9:58 PM

And a quick check of the handy NFL Arrests Database (UT San Diego) reveals….

The Steelers edging the Ravens 19 -18 in arrests since 2000!! (Yes, THAT arrest.)

Rice is just the most recent in a steady stream of dirtbags. It’s comical anyone would claim that their favorite NFL team is morally superior. It’s just not the nature of the business, folks.
