Jason Licht: Buccaneers “absolutely” looking for a veteran quarterback

Although he had complimentary things to say about Mike Glennon, Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said last week that the team has to consider quarterbacks with the seventh overall pick and that he’d like to see the team add a veteran quarterback to the roster this offseason.

He’s got support from the team’s general manager on the latter desire. As Jason Licht retools the roster this offseason, he’ll be looking for an experienced quarterback to compete with and possibly replace Glennon as the team’s starter.

“Absolutely,” Licht said, via the Tampa Tribune. “New coach, new regime, you can’t just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter. You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody. So, that’s what we’ll be looking for.”

Whether they are doing it for Glennon or someone else, the veteran options available right now fit more into the category of placeholders than long-term solutions. Josh McCown, Michael Vick and Matt Cassel are the top names on the free agent market and Matt Schaub is expected to hit the market when the Texans start making moves for 2014.

Glennon will be the starter. I think he’s shown that he can be a solid QB in this league. He reminds me of Brad Johnson with a slightly better arm.

Sheesh – even bring back McNabb.

Is Rex Grossman available? Didn’t he play at Florida and take Lovie to a Super Bowl?

It’s gonna be Vick, unless Vick is smart and stays in philly as the backup.

It had better not be Vick. I’ll drop my season tickets if they bring him in.

Glennon is the man, no need to draft another QB. We just need to develop Glennon into elite level!

    Glennon, demand a trade ASAP.

    This team doesn’t like you.

How to leave? Create a disturbance (as you should).

“Bring in veteran qb VINCE YOUNG”… Vince is mobile– with talent and playoff experience…. He is hungry, motivated and his 31 and 19 record shows he can play this game at a high level as a starter or a good backup…. He is a LOW risk-HIGH reward quarterback… and a wise choice for any GM/Head Coach looking to upgrade their quarterback pool….

There are five QBs named is this post. One has youth and promise and the other four are older solid midlevel players with no further upside. If that’s the FA market for veteran QBs, I’d rather stay with what I have.
