Bengals won’t change much on defense

The Bengals have a pair of new coordinators and there’s been speculation that the offense will have a different look with Hue Jackson calling the plays than it did when Jay Gruden was the man in charge.

New defensive coordinator Paul Guenther says that won’t be the case on defense. Guenther worked under Mike Zimmer for several years and saw the success that Zimmer’s units have had in Cincinnati, which means he won’t be trying to fix unbroken things about the unit.

“Our defense isn’t going to change,” Guenther said, via the Cincinnati Enquirer. “Our players know it. I know it. I’ll put a couple new wrinkles in where I think we were a little vanilla in some areas. I will change a little bit of things.”

Guenther said that he doesn’t anticipate doing a lot more blitzing than Zimmer did, although that’s one area where there could be some change in Cincinnati. Otherwise, it sounds like it will mostly be about plugging players into their spots and letting them go pretty much as they have over the last few years. Given three trips to the playoffs driven by the defense in the last three years, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all.
