Brent Grimes “pretty optimistic” about a new contract in Miami

Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes says his agent and the team have been talking, and Grimes feels good about a deal getting done before he becomes a free agent on March 11.

I’m pretty optimistic,” Grimes told the Miami Herald. “They said they like me here and want to have me back. Hopefully, it happens sooner than later, and I don’t have to worry about it.”

Grimes signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Dolphins last year and earned that money with a strong season in which he started all 16 games. If the Dolphins put the franchise tag on Grimes, they would be guaranteeing him more than double his 2013 salary, as the 2014 cornerback tender will be about $11.3 million, but Grimes said he doesn’t want to be franchised.

“Nobody wants to get franchise tag, another one-year deal,” Grimes said.

Grimes wants a long-term deal, and he thinks he’ll have it soon.

  1. A lot of FA CBs onthe market at a similar level to Grimes(Talib, VDavis, AVerner etc). If he signs it will be interesting to see where the market is set.

  2. Penny pincher Amonte will screw it up for the Dolphins and Mr. Ross. Will be based totally on analysis only, not if the player is a winner or destine loser.

  3. Maybe Grimes can use some of that cash to pay for my grill he knocked over while cutting through my yard after leaving a bar during his Shippensburg days

  4. Pay the Man! The Fins have the Cap space and we Fans NEED some good news… It has been downright depressing since the middle of December before Playoff hopes were dashed. Well, scratch that depressing since the last decade.

  5. Umm didn’t we select two cornerbacks in last years draft? Oh yeah they sandwiched are other great draft choice Dallas Thomas.. That has to be a record missed four picks in a row all useless.. One kicker came out of 9 draft picks.. I could do better with darts and a list of names I mean really!

  6. Grimes is one of the best corners in the league. I want to see him back. That’ll at least be one thing the Fins won’t have to worry about.

  7. Pay the man!
The Dolphins have a Pro Bowl caliber CB that has freakish athletic ability for his size and leads by example. Brings no drama.
That’s the kind of guy you want to sign.
Besides Wake, probably the most respected player on defense.
(The unglorified position of DT not withstanding)
    Worth every penny he gets.

so they are considered a miss after 1 year in the league and both cb’s did not play because of injury? that’s great analysis there.

d.jordan was very effective and was ranked very high in qb pressure when he was able to get in the game, it’s not his fault the d line is so deep, he will get more playing time and be better.

j.jenkins showed a lot of promise while on the field and now that he has a year of learning in the books will probably take wheelers spot.

d.thomas could be a miss but he may get his shot at guard this year.

m.gillisee did not get playing time, thomas will probably be gone so he should be able to show what he’s got.

c.stugis showed he has a 60 yrd leg, will get better.

cant judge draft picks on 1 year, especially if they did not get in the game due to injury or depth issues.
