Khalil Mack runs a 4.66 on his first try in the 40

KHALIL MACK AP

Even though South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney’s blazing time stole the spotlight during the early part of today’s on-field drills at the Scouting Combine, there are other big fast guys.

Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack, who some think ought to be the first player taken, just posted an unofficial 4.66-second time in his first 40-yard dash. His second attempt was an unofficial 4.62.

Compared to the 266-pound Clowney, whose unofficial 4.48 became an official 4.53 time, the 251-pound Mack is merely fast and not nuclear.

That’s not to say he’s not an impressive prospect, as he has all the tools to become a very good outside linebacker in a 3-4. But he’s not showing himself to be nearly as explosive as the man he’s competing against for the honor of being the first non-quarterback chosen, or perhaps first overall.

    Think of him with the Vikings.

    Talk about an unstoppable defense

    Different positions. One used to having hand on ground.

    I watched mack dominate against ohio state when he was the only defensive player that needed to be accounted for unlike Clowney who never dominated against superior offense of talent. MacK has that drive and mean streak that I would want in a defensive player.

    Mack = Football Player

    Clowney = Athlete

    I wouldn’t be all that upset with his combine performance dropping him to the mid first round for the Steelers.

    I would absolutely put my job on the line for Mack before Clowney. The problem is, you are also putting your job on the line if you don’t pick Clowney and he becomes LT in year 4.

    Tenths of a second can barely be measured in terms of meaningful human experiences. I’d instead rank his draft order based on that great hairstyle. I would be a terrible but extremely entertaining NFL owner.

    I’d rather have a player who runs 13 tenths of a second slower but plays the whole game with a high octane motor over a freak athlete who only plays when he feels like it.

    Overall Mack put up the most impressive numbers of anyone at the Combine, though. I’m not a fan of the guy, I think he is more of a “character” concern than Clowney, but man, his numbers are mind blowing for a person of his size.
