Report: Ravens “making progress” with Dennis Pitta

When it comes to NFL teams dealing with potential free agents, “close” can be a dangerous word.

But there are at least some signs the Ravens are moving in the right direction with tight end Dennis Pitta.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the two sides are “making progress” toward a deal, though nothing is imminent.

They have until the March 3 franchise tag deadline, though tagging Pitta could be problematic in that regard as well.

But for a negotiation that was described as “far apart” within the last week, “making progress” sounds like a good thing.

I really like Dennis Pitta as a player, and would very much like to see him continue his career in Baltimore.

Having said that, I hope the progress they’re making is headed towards paying him as a soon-to-be 29-year-old TE coming off of a major hip injury.

just don’t overpay for him please.

Report: No progress has been made between Ravens and Pitta. You just wait and see.

    Uh oh! Where’s this goin?!?!

Pizzle will be a Raven for life.

  6. prosportswashington says: Feb 24, 2014 3:55 PM

There is alot of hype around him considering he has never actually been that productive and that he is also coming off major injury and is nearly 30

  7. ingraven says: Feb 24, 2014 3:59 PM

I had never realized until this year that he is getting up there in age. He’ll be fine though.

  8. baltimoresnativeson says: Feb 24, 2014 3:59 PM

He should be paid around what the 7th or 8th TE in the league is making because that’s what he is.

    He is NOT top 5.

  9. flaccodelic says: Feb 24, 2014 4:20 PM

He wouldn’t seem so important if the Ravens could get another proven, legit WR in the fold. Decker maybe?

  10. Nofoolnodrool says: Feb 24, 2014 4:25 PM

    He is NOT top 5.

Try not in the top twenty.

  11. canedaddy says: Feb 24, 2014 4:37 PM

He’s definitely in the top 20. Dude is tough and almost always makes the clutch catch. A lot of Flacco’s drop in production last season is attributable to not having his buddy there, especially on third down.

But there are obviously injury concerns, and as good as Pitta is he’s not a dominating force like Graham or Gronk.

So the price has to be right. Not worried… Ozzie will be smart, as always.

Does the name Boldin ring a bell? Ozzie blew it…..but hey he made up for it with the Flacco contract……eh….right?

Funny how everyone on PFT talks about “overpaying” but when you go to a site like reddit and read the actual details … It’s very rarely the case at all.

  14. crownofthehelmet says: Feb 24, 2014 5:03 PM

Only one way he progresses. Flacco trade.

  15. deathonwings410 says: Feb 24, 2014 5:28 PM

A lot of people forget that Pitta didn’t come to the NFL until he was 25. He graduated late from BYU after spending two years overseas as a missionary or something, so he doesn’t have that many miles on him.

Actually he made up for it by restocking the defense. That’s what clearing Boldin’s big salary cap allowed. Defense improved in almost every measurement over 2012.

Ahhhh our resident steeler trolls crown and fool. It never ceases to amaze me how the two of you feel the need to comment on every raven post. Whistle past the graveyard much? See, you know that your team is on the slide. Your defense is the oldest in the league and your qb is in the November of his career. Meanwhile Oz just retools. You’ll be watching again come January and the Ravens will be in the dance. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so.

How is flacco getting paid 100mill?!? It still amazes me someone so average can get paid so much. Same with Eli, Romo and Stafford. Eli and flacco have ships I get it, but Eli is a 20+ int guy year in year out, misses the playoffs unless his team is loaded and isn’t called upon to carry the team. Flacco can barley throw for 3500 yds and I’ve said before I don’t think you need to throw for 4500 like more people think buy when your has no rb Wr or te your 100mill qb should be able to shoulder SOME of the load. Just my opinion. Oh and pitta is hittn 30, don’t overpay another player Baltimore.

Too funny our team is on the slide. Going 8-4 in the last 12 games is quite the slide there Taos troll….you are suffering from watching your team crawl to the end of the season and wet the bed in their final game…or did you forget. Ben in the November of his career…might be but you wished you had him over JumpBallJoe. Do tell oh wise raven sage, who will JumpBallJoe be throwing to while Smack Down Ray Rice is out on suspension?

  20. ravenswhat says: Feb 24, 2014 5:58 PM

Hilarious how people now play the “ravens overpay” game. No team in the league outside of maybe 5 would have let Flacco walk.

  21. jmblosser82 says: Feb 24, 2014 7:20 PM

Flacco wanted top dollar, not the open market the Bly teams that would’ve been non contending teams and Flacco isn’t t that stupid. Ozzie could’ve saved 4-5 mil a year if he would’ve let Joe test the waters.

I love how up until the offseason Raven nation was all high in Pitta. He is a major part if the offense, so on and so forth. Now when it’s time to pay him or lose him everyone says he’s trash.

  22. taosravenfan says: Feb 24, 2014 7:43 PM

Not hard when your schedule was easy and there is zero pressure b/c you lose your first 5. And like it or not Ben is in the November of his career. Couple more head shots and their feeding him oatmeal thru a straw. Meanwhile, MVP Joe has yet to miss a game. Bye the bye – when did you last make the playoffs and win a SB? Thought so…… Have a trolly day.

  23. lovefootball4life says: Feb 25, 2014 5:36 AM

No Ravens fans are calling Pitta trash. Only the trolls. Ravens want him locked up but also admit he hasn’t proven to be worthy of Jimmy Graham money.

  24. jtbsteeler says: Feb 25, 2014 9:48 AM

This is good news. Cap yourselves out for him.

    Heath > Pitta and Heap.

Really.? You are making a distinction between raven fans and trolls…..right! The commentor was alluding to a raven/troll tendency to stab former players vis a vi Boldin Reed Etc after they leave or if they appear to be leaving….

  26. jtbsteeler says: Feb 25, 2014 11:04 AM

Make no mistake, the Ravens defense is not restocked. That’s a myth.

  27. taosravenfan says: Feb 25, 2014 1:49 PM

you steeler trolls are funny. your like toddlers. if you say something enough times maybe it will come true. we have only 3 of 11 defensive starters over 30 while your whole team is ready for medicare.
