Rumors continue to swirl of Schiano to Patriots

Patriots coach Bill Belichick already has hired one of his good friends in former Browns G.M. Michael Lombardi.  Belichick could now be adding another of his good friends.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe recently reduced to writing a rumor that has been making the rounds ever since the Buccaneers fired coach Greg Schiano.  Schiano, who reportedly dined with Belichick on Thursday night at the Scouting Combine, could be hired by the Patriots.

It makes too much sense to not happen, especially in light of the extent to which Belichick reportedly lobbied the Browns to hire Schiano as the team’s next head coach.  Schiano needs a job, and the Patriots still need a linebackers coach to replace Pepper Johnson.

He will be the perfect antidote to the Tim Tebow era.

Always looking to add another classy individual….

If you read the Volin article, he said his son is graduating high school and doesn’t want to relocate. And as for a job, how much longer are the Bucs still paying him?

Well if nobody else can figure out a way to make use of Schiano then all the more power to the Pats if they can make a working relationship work. If he does a good job then that could be a good recruiting tool for them when talking to players that might consider teams like the Browns or the Bucs that weren’t able to coordinate providing the needed coaching support to make the team successful. They can say they found a niche and found a way to put Schiano in a position to succeed and to help his players succeed. You get the motivation and the teaching from Schiano but not the lousy boss stuff, it’s basically the best of all coaching worlds if you can buy into that.

    Camera man? Get it.

Assistant head coach spot is vacant , perfect for schiano and pats

  7. ravenswhat says: Feb 24, 2014 1:07 PM

It was prob a handshake deal after schiano gave up 2 stud players for a bag of chips to the pats. What a joke.

TAKE THAT ALL YOU BRADY HATERS…..He keeps making diamonds,,,,,

Surrounding yourself with friends/relatives is suicidal for most managers.

  10. rc33 says: Feb 24, 2014 1:12 PM

Oh yeah, Blount was such a stud…and in such high demand…when the Patriots dealt for him last year. All I kept hearing was he’d likely be waived. Laughable.

We need to get a damn defensive coordinator. Nothing against Matt Patricia but man! This defense has been hanging on by a thread.

  12. tedmurph says: Feb 24, 2014 1:20 PM

Schiano is gonna be paid 3 more yrs by Tampa and has a kid in high school thru 2015. Why would he want some assistant/consultant job, like they just gave Lombardi, for short money. Just schmoozing, staying on the radar, IMO.

I mean… it’s not like both sides of the ball in New England have former Buccaneers players that hate Schiano’s guts.

    …Right?

  14. bubba2014 says: Feb 24, 2014 1:48 PM

Oh wow… Shoulda given the Pats a couple more good Bucs players before he got axed!

  15. fumblenuts says: Feb 24, 2014 1:50 PM

    Toes on the line!!

  16. chargerdillon says: Feb 24, 2014 1:53 PM

With the way he fractured his own locker room, nothing would excite me more for this guy to go to the Patriots

  17. surfinbird1 says: Feb 24, 2014 1:57 PM

The defense could always use help and he has a pretty good background as a DC and played linebacker at a pretty high level in college. Can’t hurt.

  18. patfanken says: Feb 24, 2014 2:09 PM

People quickly forget that he took a Rutgers program that NO ONE could turn around and made them into a top 25 team for the first time in generations.

I see him just doing some “consulting” for the Pats while the Buc’s pay him, before he signs on in some capacity for the 2015 season.

  19. chris3141084 says: Feb 24, 2014 2:11 PM

Maybe Belichick lobbied for the Browns to hire Schiano to ensure they continue to be a doormat of a franchise.

  20. chris3141084 says: Feb 24, 2014 2:12 PM

Or maybe he wanted to run Josh Gordon out of town.

  21. psousa1 says: Feb 24, 2014 2:14 PM

A Dom Capers type of thing. People forget Dom Capers was NE’s defensive backfield coach about 5 years ago for one season. Belichick was keeping a friend of his employed and in the NFL and then Capers went to the packers the following season as Def Coordinator.

  22. jimjets says: Feb 24, 2014 2:24 PM

Belicheck, Shiano and Lombardi, perfect together. Can you imagine these three dial tones out together for a night on the town? More fun than a barrell of monkeys, I’m sure.

A mumble mouthed cheat, a “tough guy” no one respects and a known idiot.

  23. floriosnuts says: Feb 24, 2014 2:26 PM

Sciano has high school aged kids he’d like to keep in the Tampa area and any $$ the Pats pay him is deduced from the 3 years worth of Salary Tampa owes him. He don’t need no job.

  24. brooks07 says: Feb 24, 2014 3:03 PM

I guess the Pats are going to have to get rid of Taliban and Blount to make him happy….

  25. edelmanfanclub says: Feb 24, 2014 3:14 PM

Wouldnt mind the hiring of AHC/LB since we lost Scar nad Pep. He’s a good coach, but he failed because he couldnt adjust his coaching style to the pros. The media tried to chew him up for the Freeman thing but as I recall he was 100% right about that. He wasn’t the GM so he didn’t trade Blount and Talib for nothing I am sure he lobbied for it though. It won’t be a problem for him as an assistant coach though, he won’t have final say on anything really.

  26. ampats says: Feb 24, 2014 3:40 PM

Always enjoy comments from trolls critical of NFL executives/coaches while they peck away on their keyboard from their basement or little cubicle. It shows that they really don’t know what they are talking about since BB only mumbles when speaking to the press a requirement he finds a waste of time much like Bill Parcells.

  27. jdphx says: Feb 25, 2014 3:06 AM

Rah-rah guys need to stay in college…

  28. rohlo says: Feb 25, 2014 4:32 AM

i guess if schiano is hired that talib wont be coming back… schiano is the one who ran him out of tampa bay!

  29. nobby821 says: Feb 25, 2014 6:16 PM

Still can’t figure out why the Bucs replaced Rah with a Rah Rah.
