Stephen Jones raves about Johnny Manziel

How ’bout them Cowboys indeed.

With the 16th pick in the 2013 draft, the Cowboys likely aren’t even remotely close to the Johnny Manziel splash zone.  But that isn’t stopping the Cowboys from gushing about a guy they’ll have a chance of getting only if they trade up.

“I think he’s going to be a star in this league,” Cowboys executive V.P. Stephen Jones told SiriusXM NFL Radio regarding Manziel, via NFL.com.  “I think he’s going to be very successful.  I think he’s a great competitor, and I think he’s going to have an unbelievable career.”

Jones compared the youngster to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who is recovering from back surgery and who’ll blow out 34 candles on April 21.

“He seems to have eyes in each corner of his head, in terms of being able to see the field,” Jones said of Manziel. “A little bit like our guy, he can scramble.  A lot of people think he’s scrambling to run all the time, but he does do a lot of scrambling to throw it.  I think that’s unique.  This guy will get out of trouble, and his eyes are always down field.”

The Cowboys eyes apparently are on Manziel, and presumably they’d be happy if he slides down the board.

Or maybe it’s all part of the inevitable pre-draft B.S. misdirections.  Maybe Jones actually thinks Manziel will be a bust, and Jones hopes that the Cowboys’ only rival in Texas will use the first overall pick on a guy who won’t get it done at the next level.

Regardless, if the Cowboys truly covet Manziel, they shouldn’t be saying so.

I hope Manziel doesn’t go to that circus. I would like to be able to actually enjoy watching him play his NFL career.

On the other hand, if the Cowboys are truly convinced he will be a big star, then I hope they SEVERELY overpay to trade up in the draft.

Romo, 1st, and 3rd move into the top five and snap him up!

Just 2 days ago Stephen Jones raved about Bill Callahan and Jerry Jones raved about a team in London yet they are 8-8 every year.

The Joneses are so, so annoying.

  6. prosportswashington says: Feb 24, 2014 5:25 PM

He said “he will have alot of success”, yet also compared him to Tony Romo…?

  7. fissels says: Feb 24, 2014 5:25 PM

I like Johnny football’s future better than Romo’s. Its far fetched, but if the Cowboys could make a deal their team would be better in the long run.

  8. imbetteratlifethanyou says: Feb 24, 2014 5:26 PM

Yes, the Cowboys go 8-8 every year – but that’s at least 4 games better than the pathetic vikings.

  9. gbmickey says: Feb 24, 2014 5:26 PM

Getting a compliment from one of the Jones is the kiss of death for Manziel.

  10. tinopuno says: Feb 24, 2014 5:28 PM

All smart football people are deeply interested in ANYTHING Stephen Jones says. His football genius is second to only that of his father.

  11. djshnooks says: Feb 24, 2014 5:31 PM

Russell Wilson was the best player on his Wisconsin team…Manziel had two top-5 LT’s protecting his blindside, and a beast of a WR who caught everything even when he was covered, probably a top-10 pick.

They made him better, more than he made them look better…not to mention he played in a scheme catered to his abilities…how will he look when put in an NFL offense?

Wilson is also a natural leader…Manziel does not strike me as that kind of kid.

  12. jayquintana says: Feb 24, 2014 5:32 PM

This pretty much guarantees Manziel won’t be the first pick in the draft.

  13. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Feb 24, 2014 5:33 PM

Is Stephen Jones that guy who scrubs Jerry Jones’s glasses in the luxury box?

    That was brutal.

A lot of raving in Dallas these days….

  15. guachosporlife says: Feb 24, 2014 5:40 PM

You could have Manziel, Staubach, Aikman, Montana with Manning as a back up and still not win with that historically bad defense. Get a defense and you can win regardless of QB.

  16. ejm845 says: Feb 24, 2014 5:40 PM

I hope he doesn’t go to Dallas It would be a shame to have his carrier ruined

  17. rajbais says: Feb 24, 2014 5:41 PM

    Then draft him.

Your mediocre franchise is letting your employment unworthy coach run the defense.

    Why not?

  19. tooz72 says: Feb 24, 2014 5:43 PM

    Jerry Jones = Al Davis
    Stephen Jones = Mark Davis

  20. thefiesty1 says: Feb 24, 2014 5:48 PM

I hope Johnny Pigskin goes somewhere other than the CowBabies so he can do better than 8-8 every year.

  21. wmelch says: Feb 24, 2014 5:49 PM

I’m confused. Are they holding the 2013 draft this year? If so, when do they hold the 2014 draft?

Remember boys, proofreading is your friend. Embrace the proofread.

If you can’t get simple facts correct, how can a person trust anything that you write?

  22. russrpm says: Feb 24, 2014 5:53 PM

If he’s asked the question, what do you expect him to say? Anyone connected to any team in the league will say the exact same thing, IF THEY ARE TALKING ON THE RECORD. It’s the ones who insist on being a “source close to the team” who will bad mouth a player. The only thing that makes this worthy of any column inches is that it involves the Cowboys, whom everyone either hates or loves, with no middle ground.

  23. chawk12thman says: Feb 24, 2014 5:54 PM

Texans trade their first pick to Dallas for Tony…….Makes sense for Dallas and their Cap Issues. Makes sense that the Texans would become very competitive for a playoff run.

  24. ravenswhat says: Feb 24, 2014 5:54 PM

Comparing him to Romo was supposed to be a compliment? To who?

  25. richardmswartz says: Feb 24, 2014 5:56 PM

Manziel is going to be a huge bust. He runs around in cricles until something materializes. We’ve learned that doesn’t work in the NFL, and while I actually like running quarterbacks, pocket-efficiency must be the number 1 concern and this guy is just too small.

  26. thefootballgodssay says: Feb 24, 2014 6:04 PM

  27. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Feb 24, 2014 6:08 PM

Wasnt everyone raving about how great Ryan Leaf was going to be at one time too?

  29. realdealsteel says: Feb 24, 2014 6:11 PM

The only reason their raving about him is that he already plays like Tony Romo. Their enamored with that type of play but that type of play isn’t winning any rings.

  30. discountdoublecheck says: Feb 24, 2014 6:11 PM

Am I the only one who has no interest in keeping up with the Joneses?

  31. clickablecontent says: Feb 24, 2014 6:13 PM

This is just jockeying. Irrespective of how they value him, Dallas is just talking up Manziel so a preceeding team uses an early pick on him rather than take whomever Dallas has a realistic shot at pick 16.

  32. prgsdw says: Feb 24, 2014 6:13 PM

It’s pretty obvious what this means:

    1) Stephen Jones may genuinely like Manziel.
    2) Dallas has no intention of taking Manziel (see Romo contract, Garrett needing to win now).
    3) Dallas is interested in appearing to like Manziel so that if he slides to them, they can ransom the pick to the highest bidder.

    At least that’s what I think anyway… ;)

  33. vavikingfan says: Feb 24, 2014 6:17 PM

Jerry is going to be so mad at Stephen for speaking without permission he’s going to make Jason Garrett coach special teams too.

  34. thegreatgabbert says: Feb 24, 2014 6:18 PM

Johnny has eyes in all four corners of his head. Like the robot in Revenge Of The Nerds.

  35. whatjusthapped says: Feb 24, 2014 6:18 PM

Manziel is going to have a career more like Vick than Russell Wilson. He will run as much as Vick and get hurt as much as Vick but will never win the big one. So in that one respect, he is perfect for the perennially 8-8 Cowboys.

  36. ariani1985 says: Feb 24, 2014 6:22 PM

And that clown music you hear is green bay running its practices.

  37. packerbackernj says: Feb 24, 2014 6:23 PM

Stephen cant wait for Jerry to pass or retire so he can be the next GM/Owner just like dad!

  38. stealthscorpio says: Feb 24, 2014 6:31 PM

Clip and save, JMZ to Cowboys…

  39. thejuddstir says: Feb 24, 2014 6:41 PM

Stephen Jones = the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

  40. mogogo1 says: Feb 24, 2014 6:48 PM

So, does Stephen get an old-school memo from Jerry telling him what to rave about or have they progressed to using texts for that now? Just trying to keep up on how technologically savvy the Jones are.

  41. Ed Bandell says: Feb 24, 2014 6:48 PM

The only thing to find out about Manziel now is if he can somehow manage to self destruct while in crucial game situations with playoff implications on the line. Then he would be just like Romo.

All kidding aside, I am sure you can find warts on all the players in the draft if you looked hard enough. There are some red flags with Manziel off the field and some will still question his height.

  42. thegreatgabbert says: Feb 24, 2014 6:50 PM

Sure, Johnny looks a bit nerdish for a pro football player, but “eyes in all the corners of his head”? That’s a bit of a low blow.

  43. kevpft says: Feb 24, 2014 6:52 PM

I will be shocked if Manziel doesn’t go first in the draft. Every team is looking for an x-factor, and this guy has it more than the next 10 top players combined.

Not a follower of his, or saying it will all work out. I’d just be shocked if he doesn’t go first.

  44. coachbeck says: Feb 24, 2014 7:07 PM

I think Manzel will be pretty good actually. Especially if he goes to a team with a good defense and running game. He has a knack for getting outta trouble and making plays.

  45. bobleblah says: Feb 24, 2014 7:15 PM

Today I learned that I share a birthday with Tony Romo.

  46. cliffclavicle says: Feb 24, 2014 7:54 PM

He plays like a cross between Romo and a young Tarkenton with a dash of Vick thrown in there. Injuries are the only concern with Manziel, his kamikaze style will no doubt get him hurt in the NFL. But just talent-wise, he’s the best football player in the draft.

  47. ghengy says: Feb 24, 2014 8:48 PM

Well since the Jaguars are on TV every friggin Sunday, I’d like to see the Jags take Manziel. Then sign Tebow as his backup. LOL

  48. officialgame says: Feb 24, 2014 9:07 PM

Now if you were smart Steve you wouldn’t have wasted all that money on a declining Romo. You should have trade him and had one bad year and you would now be in a position to rebuild with Manzeil. Instead you are stuck in proverbial mediocrity.

  49. 700levelvet says: Feb 24, 2014 9:28 PM

  50. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Feb 24, 2014 9:34 PM

Jones just said he thinks Manziel will be a successful NFL QB. Didn’t say they were going to draft him or even wanted to.

And the speculation that they are trying to make the Texans mess up is just cray.

  51. dualprime says: Feb 24, 2014 10:43 PM

Funny, Johnny Football has won exactly one less playoff game than Romo.

  52. pftfan says: Feb 24, 2014 11:21 PM

Not a Cowboys fan, nor a Johnny Manziel fan, but as a fan of both football and entertainment, you literally cannot do better than Johnny Football getting drafted by the Cowboys.

Would be an incredible site to watch, for better or worse. This is one big move I would actually love to see Jerry Jones make, just because an NFL with Johnny Football in a Cowboys uniform would give you a new story each week.

  53. kst2074 says: Feb 25, 2014 8:14 AM

as a skins fan I would love to see him come to Dallas, that would set them back 10 years

  55. Grulks says: Feb 25, 2014 9:30 AM

I don’t expect this to be a highly regarded comment, bc it’s against the grain so to speak. I son’t think Manziel is going to be a good qb in the NFL. He’s more or less a Tim Tebow, only he is a slightly better passer and not as good as a runner.

He also played on a team with an Oline that weighed as much as some entire teams, he wont have the luxury of one of the best lines in the NFL. Add all of that, with the fact that he was thrown out of Mannings passing camp, and youve got a kid with an arrogance problem. If you arent willing ti listen to one of the greatest QBs playing now, what makes anyone think he would listen to coaches, or anyone else.

Just, my opinion, I guess time will tell.

Manziel, just like Tebow and Vince Young, will be out of the league before he has a chance to make too many people look like fools for taking a chance on Him.
The Seahawks proved that with a great defense, you can win despite the lack of talent at Quarterback. You Can even win it all.
The Cowboys have proven that despite the lack of a good defense, a great Quarterback can win for you. He just can’t win it all for you.
I hope the Cowboys don’t take Manziel. It will kill them for the next decade or more.
I also hope that when Manziel is released at the end of his Rookie contract, that he has partied most of His money away.
