Jerry Jones: Blame me, not Romo, for not winning Super Bowls

Getty Images

Detractors of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo have long pointed to his late-game turnovers as a reason why the Cowboys haven’t been able to make it deeper into the playoffs or win any recent Super Bowls.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has long been a defender of Romo’s, so it is no surprise that he doesn’t agree with that assessment of why the team has fallen short. Jones instead looked at the mirror during an interview with 105.3 The Fan and said the team “probably paid some people that we probably would’ve been better off not paying” which boils down to a management issue.

“We should have been knocking on the door and we haven’t and I have no excuses, it starts here,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “But we have not, and I know that to the extent that we have a healthy Romo, our best chance to get back there right now, our best chance to get in the Super Bowl is a healthy Romo.”

Jones probably won’t get too much argument on the opinion that his moves as the team’s general manager and penchant for having a hand in all football decisions is the biggest reason why the Cowboys have won just one playoff game in almost two decades. Admitting a problem is just the first step toward correcting it, though, and there’s no sign that the team will be doing business any differently in the future.

I’m pretty sure most people do anyway.

  2. rr2000k says: Feb 26, 2014 11:32 AM

    Umm, can we blame both?

  3. steelnucs says: Feb 26, 2014 11:33 AM

I think most people, including Cowboy fans I know, already do. No problems there, Jer.

  4. athwartships says: Feb 26, 2014 11:34 AM

Was someone blaming anyone but Jones for the failures in Dallas?

  5. Florio_Jr. says: Feb 26, 2014 11:34 AM

    Blame both.

    You’re fired.

  7. truehoosier62 says: Feb 26, 2014 11:35 AM

Don’t worry Jerra, we have enough blame to cover both you AND Romo. Our supply is limitless.

  8. mpnieland says: Feb 26, 2014 11:36 AM

Well, Jerry, most owners would fire a GM that they BLAMED for not winning Super Bowls.

So if you admit you’re to blame, take the logical step a smart owner would do.

  9. tinbender2000 says: Feb 26, 2014 11:36 AM

    No problem.

  10. zack2482 says: Feb 26, 2014 11:36 AM

This is true. Romo has never been the problem in Dallas. They have failed to build a legit defense around him since he’s been the starter.

  11. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Feb 26, 2014 11:37 AM

I agree with his self critique but Romo has been an issue too.

Parcels couldn’t even win a playoff game with Romo and all he had to do was successfully hold the ball on a FG attempt and they would have.

  12. doubleogator says: Feb 26, 2014 11:37 AM

Thanks Gerry, but we’ve already done that for years…

  23. thestrategyexpert says: Feb 26, 2014 11:46 AM

Good for him in understanding that everything flows down from him and now it’s up to him to decide how bad does he want to win and will he put in the time to figure out how to win or who to hire that can get them to win. If he doesn’t put in the effort and want it bad enough then he won’t achieve tremendous success. Figure it out, because you are in control so that job is on you and the team is dependent on you completing that job.

  24. vmannj says: Feb 26, 2014 11:48 AM

Don’t worry, Jerry. We have. 100% of the blame falls on you. It’s your fault for hiring Wade Phillips, a coach with ZERO playoff wins, when your 28 year old QB was in the prime of his career. It’s your fault for using 4th round draft picks on D-2 projects like David Arkin and Matt Johnson rather than building legitimate depth. It’s your fault for waiting so long to invest two first round picks in your offensive line. It’s your fault for creating chaos within the coaching staff by piecing things together instead of allowing your head coach to build his own staff. And I swear, if I hear you say the phrase Romo-friendly one more time, I’ll punch you in the face. If you want a QB-friendly offense find a running game that takes pressure off your QB rather than riding him into the ground by expecting him to not only run the offense, but to also come up with his own game plan during the week. Again Jerry, we know it’s your fault. 100%.

    Just sayin’

  35. irishgary says: Feb 26, 2014 11:57 AM

Really???? Romo has never been the problem? The botched snap in Seattle, the countless late game picks??Just let me refresh your memory. Denver and Green Bay from the 2013 season.

  36. rg3sus says: Feb 26, 2014 12:00 PM

How can this guy continue to admit his faults and items like he would have fired his GM for these results if he were not the GM, and not even consider taking a step back and giving some one else a shot? I almost feel that’s worse than not accepting responsibility. This just shows he cares more about playing real life fantasy football then he does about his team.

  37. losangelesbillsofbuffalo says: Feb 26, 2014 12:00 PM

  43. jchavez9238 says: Feb 26, 2014 12:05 PM

As a NON cowboys fan, I must admit Romo is a very talented QB. The problem is everyone around him making him to look like a failure. There has been times where he made “Bone-Head” errors, but who hasn’t… Trade Romo, and I am certain that team will shine!!!

  44. greysolon says: Feb 26, 2014 12:07 PM

Ask the next Cowboy fan you see what the problem is– virtually every single one will say Romo and Jerry.

  48. flannlv says: Feb 26, 2014 12:23 PM

  49. gbpshareholder says: Feb 26, 2014 12:23 PM

  53. crownofthehelmet says: Feb 26, 2014 12:31 PM

What ruined this team was their SB win in 95. After that, Jerry approached everything like the SB was a given.

  54. drs76109 says: Feb 26, 2014 12:34 PM

  59. friscoal says: Feb 26, 2014 12:47 PM

The real problem here is that Jones thinks he knows all there is to know about football. He knows squat about football. His power-driven ego refuses to allow him to admit that.

  60. chawk12thman says: Feb 26, 2014 12:49 PM

First step is to admit you have a problem. Now; what are you going to do about it?

  61. itsnotforme says: Feb 26, 2014 12:51 PM

I’m sure after this season Jerry will have a hundred million reasons to blame Romo.

  62. bluenose1965 says: Feb 26, 2014 1:01 PM

Newsflash…. We’ve been blaming you for the last two decades….

You ARE the reason the Cowboys don’t win Super Bowls….

but thanks for now letting us do what we already do…

Can we pleas have your permission to Drive Cars in the United States ??? I surely wouldn’t want to do anything without your permission.

  68. hawksforever says: Feb 26, 2014 1:38 PM

Poor Jerruh. He gets dumber by the day. I wonder if there is a bottom .

  69. cowpiesnotcowboys says: Feb 26, 2014 1:41 PM

Romo’s ridiculous contract (both loo long and too large given Romo’s age and abilities) leaves the team with too little cap space to address other deficiencies. I guess you can’t blame Romo for taking as much as Jerrah was willing to give him, but Romo is (indirectly) a good part of the reason why the Cowboys aren’t better on both sides of the ball.

  70. FoozieGrooler says: Feb 26, 2014 1:52 PM

    Don’t worry Jerry, we do.

  71. tindeaux says: Feb 26, 2014 1:53 PM

  72. sep3016 says: Feb 26, 2014 1:54 PM

So it must have been Jerry in Romo’s inform that threw those AIR BOMBS. Now it makes sense to me.

  73. packerbackernj says: Feb 26, 2014 2:01 PM

This guy is the absolute worst. Worries about drafting arkansas almun and skill position players because they sell jerseys. Gives out some of the absolutely worst contracts in the NFL. Think Marion Barber (seven years, $45 million), Flozell Adams (six years, $42 million), Leonard Davis (seven years, $50 million), Roy Williams (six years, $54 million), Ken Hamlin (six years, $38 million) and the other Roy Williams (four years, $25 million). Can’t keep his hands out of football operations, and refuses to fix glaring weaknesses on the ball club. Who needs an OLine when you can draft or sign more WRs. I blame Romo very little.

  74. rajbais says: Feb 26, 2014 2:04 PM

    Taking responsibility is overrated.

Making up for your mistake is the right thing to do!!!

How should Jerry make up for the mistake?

    Leaving the GM post.

    How bout dem Cowboys!!!

  76. cheapglazers says: Feb 26, 2014 2:37 PM

You should be blaming the Hawks, Ravens, Giants, Packers, Saints, Steelers, colts and Patriots, because they earned Superbowl wins. You act like it is supposed to be a given. I got news for you. You have to earn it over the rest of the league, it doesn’t just happen!

  77. imbetteratlifethanyou says: Feb 26, 2014 2:54 PM

Whose to blame the vikings for NEVER winning a Super Bowl? That list is probably pretty long.

  78. nortonfest says: Feb 26, 2014 3:01 PM

As a Cowboys fan for too many years to count, it is very easy to agree with Jerry. But for the Romo bashers, you apparently aren’t watching the games, just what ESPN shows you.

Parcells is more to blame for the playoff loss in Seattle, not Romo. Seattle had two cornerbacks fresh off the street and we never attacked them. The offensive play calling was terrible.

Put a decent defense around Romo and better play calling, and the outcome would be a lot player. Romo has won more games for the team than the few that really are his fault.

  79. malab377 says: Feb 26, 2014 3:12 PM

  81. Ed Bandell says: Feb 26, 2014 3:28 PM

Did Jerry Jones take a snap on the football field for the Cowboys?

Did Jones bobble a snap? Does he throw horrible interceptions in critical situations? Did he fumble the ball?

His players should play the heck out of themselves for him now. He is taking the target off their backs and saying it isn’t their fault. But….it is. They just aren’t playing well.

  82. lgwelsh1 says: Feb 26, 2014 3:35 PM

Romo hasn’t been the problem, the guy is forced to wing the ball all over the field due to them constantly being down in games ( Or losing the lead ).

So yeah he going to throw interceptions, look at the defenses LOL, it’s all pass defenses most of the time. It’s a wonder his stats are as good as they are.

Cowboys need a better defense, they would have won 3-4 more games last year alone.
