Report: Eagles close to new deal with Riley Cooper

Riley Cooper AP

As Florio mentioned earlier in the day, the early reports of the Eagles preferring Jeremy Maclin to Riley Cooper didn’t quite add up. And it wasn’t even close.

That’s evidenced by the fact that Cooper is close to a new deal with the team.

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the team is close to a new deal with Cooper, which could be finalized and announced within days.

McLane also reports the team is expected to sign Maclin to a one-year deal, allowing himself to prove his worth after tearing his ACL last July.

That’s an impressive few days work for the Eagles if it all happens, after locking left tackle Jason Peters up to a long-term extension today.

So if this all happens and neither Byrd nor T.J. Ward become available in free agency, then one would got to think that the safety Pryor would be their first round pick.

This doesn’t mean that Maclin wasn’t a higher priority or preferred over Cooper. It could mean that the Eagles can’t complete a deal because Maclin is asking for too much whereas Cooper is giving them a sweetheart deal. And Cooper might have done that if he wanted to beat Maclin to the punch as being certain to return to the team.

The only thing this tells me is that Cooper wants to play for the Eagles at a reasonable rate more than Maclin does.

Locking up Cooper long-term and signing Maclin to a 1-year deal would be a pretty great outcome for the Eagles. They can draft or bring in a free agent at wideout/KR/PR and they’re set at all of the skill positions.

Maclin’s always hurt. Cooper’s a go to guy.

Maclin is 10 x better than Cooper.

At this point in time I prefer Cooper over Maclin. Cooper had a good year last year and he is a bigger more physical receiver which means he is also good for blocking. Maclin, although a good receiver too, has had injury problems.

The Eagles might have to trade up to get Pryor now.

Maclin can’t even get on the field and people think he’s better than Cooper?

Maclin is 10 x better than Cooper.

When he is physically able to perform maybe….but he is too brittle for the NFL .
