Report: Redskins agonizing over whether to keep Orakpo

Orakpo AP

If the Washington Redskins haven’t made an “official offer” to linebacker Brian Orakpo, there’s a good reason for it.

They haven’t decided whether they want to keep him.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that the team isn’t sure whether to make the financial commitment necessary to keep Orakpo around.

“I think there’s a lot of back and forth on it,” an unnamed source with knowledge of the team’s deliberations told Maske.   “I don’t think it’s clear cut.”

Maske also explains that it’s a “really close call” on whether the Redskins will apply the franchise tag to Orakpo before Monday’s deadline.  A decision to tag Orakpo could be followed by a Terrell Suggs-style fight over whether he’s really a defensive end, which has a 2014 tender amount of $13.116 million.  The franchise tag for linebackers is $11.455 million.

The Redskins also could apply the transition tag to Orakpo, which would give them a right to match but not compensation if he leave.  It would cost $9.754 million at linebacker, $10.633 million at defensive end.  And if Orakpo signs the tender, the money will become fully guaranteed.

The Redskins have a history of spending bigger money on free agents from other teams than on their own players, a practice that can send a bad message to a locker room full of young players hoping to be rewarded financially for their efforts.  It’s always better for those players to think they’ll get their reward without having to move to a new city.

Every time “logicalvoicesays” leaves a comment I click his name and read “Robert Griffin the 3rd will be the greatest QB to ever live when it’s all said and done. The Washington Redskins are a first class organization who will win Super Bowl upon Super Bowl for taking initative to draft RGIII. If you don’t agree than you are either don’t know the sport of football or are a moron. Case closed. #HTTR”.

-at that point I remember how ridiculous his opinion is.

    “kst2074 says:
    Mar 1, 2014 6:53 PM
Im a long time skins fan and Im not sure hes worth top dollar Look at his sacks, not that many”

In the last 20 years there were 4 redskins to get double digit sacks in a year:

    94- Ken Harvey
    2000- Bruce Smith
    2009- Andre Carter
    2009- Brian Orakpo
    2013- Brian Orakpo

How in the hell does Brian Orakpo – the top 3-4 pass rusher on the market – not deserve a 10 million dollar contract or maybe even a few more million a year?

He’s paid his dues and he’s the only player in the past 20 years to get double digit sacks for us twice.

He’s the only player that offenses scheme for to stop on our defense.

I like Kerrigan, but he’s yet to get double digit sacks going against right tackles. Orakpo’s done it twice in 4 years and the two years he didn’t get 10, he still got equal to or more than Kerrigan has ever gotten and Kerrigan goes against lesser offensive lineman every week.

  35. edshrinker says: Mar 1, 2014 7:32 PM

10 million (out of the 35 million in cap space?).

Good Dog opposite Clay Matthews that would be awesome.

Spending money is Dan Snyder’s favourite thing to do. Why is he hesitant to now?

Dan Snyder is a fantasy football owner. He longs for all of these great players he sees playing on other teams and wants to buy them for the Redskin Potatoes. He would much rather throw money at other teams’ players than use it to secure the core of his own team.

  37. rjth2012 says: Mar 1, 2014 7:41 PM

I am really surprised that the Redskins are debating it. Being an Eagles fan I realize this guy is very good (not great). The Eagles would seriously look at him I believe.
However I bet this all is resolved by Monday and he is back in the Redskins fold.

Welcome to Philadelphia Brian – An organization that DOES financially reward players on the roster.

  39. hailskins94 says: Mar 1, 2014 7:54 PM

10 sacks a year is nowhere near worth $13 million. He’s a nice player but not special. I hope they give him the transition tag.

  40. patsfan1820 says: Mar 1, 2014 7:55 PM

They should keep him. Besides Ryan Kerrigan he is the best player on their defense. They should fix that secondary though but since they kept Hall instead of going after Talib that might not be possible. What a dilemma indeed.

WOW!!! logical showed back up. I was sure he had gone into hiding, but I guess he figured that everyone had forgotten about him. Sorry buddy, but when one is as wrong as often as you are (and face it, one have been monumentally wrong), well, it’s kind of difficult to forget that. But hey, you’ve still got Shanahan, the greatest coach in football. Oh wait, he’s gone. You’ve got a QB who will win the league MVP and the Super Bowl MVP while going 14-2. Nope, 3-10 and out early. Well, you still have Kirk Cousins who is going to go undefeated the last three games of the year. Oh wait, he went winless with a sub 60 QB rating. You still have that top 5 TE and match up nightmare. Sorry, I shouldn’t use the word “match” around a known blazer like Fred Davis. He appears to be ready to fire up at a moments notice. I swear to all that’s holy logical that I will go back and find something that you were right about last year no matter how long it takes.

FYI, it could take quite a while. Don’t wait up.

Orakpo is a true D-end in a 4-3. Since we’re not using him that way, he won’t be worth the money we’d have to pay. If we went to a 4-3, I would say definitely keep him. I’d be interested to see them use the franchise tag….

A few things to point out.

First, any Eagle fan that wants to come in and talk about rewarding their own? Forget about 2 years ago? The “Dream Team”? Go crawl back in your holes. Here is the players you rewarded. A racist WR and an injured WR. Bang up job there.

Vikings fans. Seriously. I just feel bad for you. You have to wake up every day and claim you are a Vikings fan. Enough said there.

Finally, if you lazy fans want to take the time to catch up on modern news. Dan Snyder has been largely invisible over the last 4 years. And my guess is that none of you can name a “Big Name” free agent he has signed during that time.

The article, if you take the time to actually read it before posting and showing your ignorance, actually says that the Skins are weighing their options before dedicating a huge sum of money to one player.

Pretty smart business if you ask me. Alot smarter than re-signing a racist and a player who is coming off of injured reserve.

And its just one superbowl chump. Sounds like your are still high from the win and thats understandable but that organization has led to Cobains suicide and countless numbers of detox and drug treatment referalls for you fans. Sheattle has had decades years of turning off football in week 13 yourselves. So keep getting high and flapping your big mouth and showing what a complete arse you are. Its easy to tell that the shehawks fans get there first superbopwl. They dont act like they have been there. Loser

  70. cowboyhater says: Mar 2, 2014 10:24 AM

It is a tough situation with the skins. If they let him go, it leaves a huge hole on the right side of the defense, but if he stays we are risking a high dollar contract for a player who has shown a propensity for injury, can’t cover in space, and has had issues in the run game. I always hate to see one of our players walk, and then they all generally go to another organization and dominate, which will probably happen here. A DC writer made a good point about Orakpo. When the skins went on that 7 game win streak, that was without Orakpo, and then when Orakpo was back this year, we go 3-13, which tells you that one player cannot make a huge impact on a very mediocre defense, so do you still sign him to a big contract, or just let him test the market?….. Just don’t know, it’s a hard one to answer. I just want to see my beloved skins get back respectability, and quiet down all of these haters that mock our organization.

Phila is going to be a good team, but the Redskins still have the best Qb in the division – when healthy – and he’ll have him healthy this year and he’ll have a healthy offseason.

The Skins also arguably have the best running back, #1 WR & TE.

Their defense will also continue to get better

  75. nels13 says: Mar 2, 2014 2:23 PM

Another bust and injury prone, let him go and be a dud somewhere else

  76. abanig says: Mar 2, 2014 3:35 PM

For those saying Orakpo is a bust. Wtf? Seriously?

He has gotten double digit sacks twice in his career and the other two seasons he had within a sack and a half of having double digit sacks.

In the last 20 years he’s the only redskin to accomplish that feat twice and he’s only going to be 28 when the seasons starts so his best days are ahead of him until he gets around his mid 30s.

He’s also never played defensive end in the NFL for you idiots that think he should be playing in a 4-3 scheme as a DE.

When he was a rookie he was the redskins strong side linebacker who would rush the passer on passing downs.

The guys a line backer and he’s always been one in DC. And he’s racked up 39.5 sacks in 4 years while playing line backer. Yes, he’s only average in coverage but most 3-4 OLBs are only average.

  77. mjw9326mjw9326 says: Mar 2, 2014 3:52 PM

I wouldn’t mind the Bills signing him. It’s likely Byrd will be gone so they would have even more cap room left to make him an offer. They need LB help still and an extra pass rusher can never hurt.

  78. rainsarge says: Mar 2, 2014 6:21 PM

The Redskins seem to be unable to develop evaluate and appraise their own talent while overvaluing other teams talent
    let go
    Trent Green
    Brad Johnson
    Stephen Davis
    Antonio Pierce
    Carlos Rogers
    Fred Smoot
    Laron Landry
    Jason Campbell
    Brought in
    Jeff George
    Mcnabb
    Archuleta
    Merriwether
    Jason Taylor
    Haynesworth
    Andre Carter
Though the Redskins get an occasional Home Run like Simon Fletcher they have consistently lead the league for years in swing and misses in FA signings and releases. They are losing 3 good players for every 1 they sign.
