Report: Washington has yet to make Orakpo an “official offer”

Orakpo

With two years of unfair cap penalties set to expire, the Washington Redskins have been trying to re-sign some of their defensive players who would otherwise become free agents.

But it’s one thing to work out new deals with DeAngelo Hall and Chris Baker. It’s quite another to finalize a new contract with Brian Orakpo.

According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the team had yet to make an “official offer” to Orakpo as of Friday afternoon.

It’s not clear what that means. “Official offers” often aren’t made in negotiations like this. Agents and teams speak in term of concepts and ranges and hypotheticals until it appears that the time has come to get serious.

For the team, that time could be now. Otherwise, the franchise tag of $13.116 million could be coming.

Absent the franchise tag or the little-used transition tag (or a long-term deal), Orakpo will become a free agent on March 11.
