Report: Raiders currently prefer Carr to Manziel

ManzielCarr AP

With more than two months to go until the first-ever May draft, the gap between the Scouting Combine and the selection process needs to be filled with something.

Other than, you know, free agency.

Before the focus fully shifts to the looming veteran swap meet, let’s pay a little (more) attention to the buzz regarding the quarterbacks expected to be taken at the top of the draft.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times has the Raiders taking quarterback Derek Carr over Johnny Manziel in Farmer’s latest mock draft, with this observation: “The Raiders are known for their unconventional picks, so Manziel might seem like a natural fit for them. Word is, though, that they liked Carr more coming out of the Combine.”

At a time when most presume the first three quarterbacks taken will be Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, and Blake Bortles (but not necessarily in that or any specific order), it’s possible Carr will be crashing that three-man party.  (Farmer has the Vikings taking Manziel, a possible modern-day Fran Tarkenton, at No. 8.)

It’s also possible that the Raiders are sending out smoke signals aimed at making other teams guess wrong about the team’s true intentions.  And those true intentions need to be kept tightly under wraps so that the Raiders can say that whoever they draft is the guy they wanted all along.

Last year, the Raiders kept their plans quiet until the last few days before the draft, when rumors surfaced that they were considering cornerback D.J. Hayden with the third overall pick. They reportedly would have taken Hayden at No. 3 if the Dolphins hadn’t called about a possible slide to No. 12.

If Manziel and Carr are both on the clock at No. 5, the Raiders possibly could do the same thing this year, if they truly prefer Carr.  Oakland could slide down a few spots, take Carr, and add a pick or two in the process.

All of this presumes that Manziel and Carr make it to No. 5.  With the Texans, Jaguars, and Browns all needing quarterbacks, there’s a chance one or both will be gone.

Lmao that would be so Raiders. I dont think either will succeed in the NFL, but Manziel is 10x better than Carr

  2. theauger says: Mar 2, 2014 5:49 PM

It’s feels strange having the Raiders run by a competent front office now.

  4. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 2, 2014 5:54 PM

I tol’ y’all Carr would be in that top four mix. Or at least I said it, which doesn’t mean it will happen.

  5. Grinds My Gear says: Mar 2, 2014 5:54 PM

I like how the Raiders prefer one player over another because some scrub reporter expects them to pick Carr over Manziel in the mock draft and that it’s because they are “unconventional”.

  6. distracted9 says: Mar 2, 2014 5:56 PM

    Manziel it is then

  7. thevikesarebest says: Mar 2, 2014 5:56 PM

  8. shaggytoodle says: Mar 2, 2014 5:56 PM

Manziel may be more athletic, but Carr may play smarter. The other thing going for the Raiders is that, they could take someone else in the 1st and then take him in the 2nd or if they feel urgency to trade back into the late first and get him.

Reaching for QBs is a really easy way to get fired.

  9. doitbigreggiemckenzie says: Mar 2, 2014 5:58 PM

Draft Clowney or trade out. They will be picking top 5 next year and can get a QB then.

  10. somethingsmellsrotten says: Mar 2, 2014 5:59 PM

If true, hopefully Reggie can drop down to around the middle of the round…no way Carr should be taken at pick 5.

  11. jacobslatter says: Mar 2, 2014 6:01 PM

…so Jadeveon Clowney will fall to #6 the Atlanta Falcons. Done & dusted.

  12. seatownballers says: Mar 2, 2014 6:05 PM

Manziel is this year’s geno Smith. He will fall to the second round, giving the commentators much to talk about

  13. gadzod says: Mar 2, 2014 6:06 PM

As long as they don’t touch Sammy Watkins, stop the Bills can get him, I’m happy.

  15. jdcush31 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:08 PM

Just because the Raiders may prefer Carr over Manziel doesn’t mean they would draft him at 5. Talk about jumping to conclusions.

  16. stull60060 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:10 PM

Guess what. The Raiders are not going to draft a quarterback. This draft has NO franchise quarterback. The Raiders have a lot of holes to fill and have no time to groom a draft pick. They need to start winning NOW. They will sign a veteran QB and role with McGloin or the vet. They will draft D-Line, O-Line as a priority. The will upgrade other positions via free agency. Stop with the quarterback talk. It ain’t happening.

  17. northbynw27 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:10 PM

    Perpetual mediocrity in motion.

  18. azjohnny says: Mar 2, 2014 6:10 PM

IMO none of the QBs are worthy of a 1st round pick

  19. sickoe47 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:12 PM

Seems like a smokescreen set up to trick a sucker team like the vikings into trading up for derek carr.you can’t take anything about the draft serious (mock drafts, rumors etc etc) in the time leading up to the actual draft so take any comments about who the raiders like with a grain of salt.

  20. sdchicken says: Mar 2, 2014 6:16 PM

Raiders will improve this year now that they actually have draft picks and cap room. I would wait on QB, take the best player available, Sammy Watkins or Greg Robinson. Take a flyer on Taj Boyd this year with a 3rd rounder if he is still there and see if you get lucky. If not you will still have a top 10 pick next year with Winston, Mariota, and Hundley available who I like better than this years group of QBs.

  23. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 2, 2014 6:27 PM

Carr only scored 20 on the Wonderlic, according to Bob McGinn, which is a bit surprising. Unless the corrupt Packer executive who slips him the scores every year got some misinformation. Seriously the league should do that to the Packers so they can indentify the leak.

  24. rayguyreturns says: Mar 2, 2014 6:29 PM

Me thinks we need line help first before we get a QB killed.

  25. jrebar88 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:33 PM

Doesn’t matter, the Raiders won’t win more than five games for at least two more years.

  26. khmer379 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:38 PM

Good!!! maybe he’ll slide to my Vikings!!

  27. realfootballfan says: Mar 2, 2014 6:40 PM

Well, if they do take Carr, especially at that high pick they have, that should finally get Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen fired.

  28. kurmudge says: Mar 2, 2014 6:42 PM

I think I’ll be very surprised if Spielman picks Manziel.

  29. arrogantnation says: Mar 2, 2014 6:47 PM

Carr isn’t a first round QB. I saw him up close and personal in the Vegas Bowl and SC’s defense stymied him the entire game.

  30. iccrmkd says: Mar 2, 2014 6:48 PM

If the Raiders don’t Fix the Offensive line…..A stationary CARR will get crushed….

  31. thegonz13 says: Mar 2, 2014 6:52 PM

Then again, Blaine Gabbert scored a 42 on the Wonderlic… what kind of career has he had?

  32. brooklyn40niner says: Mar 2, 2014 6:53 PM

Carr does seem like the better PRO prospect. 7 TD passes in one game.

Like Elway said: Manziel is a nice little player.

    No more, no less.

  33. Phil says: Mar 2, 2014 6:56 PM

Completely irrelevant. Neither player threw at the combine.

  34. channer81 says: Mar 2, 2014 7:01 PM

Manziel is too marketable to slip far in the draft. When owners see dollar signs they will pounce. He will go sooner than expected and I bet an owner would have had a say in the manner.

  35. rabidboy says: Mar 2, 2014 7:01 PM

Firstly, Al Davis is dead, so comparisons to the way the Raiders unorthodoxly ran their drafts is out the window.

The DJ Hayden is a clear example of how the Raiders have changed in their drafting selection with them moving to #6 instead of staying put at #3.

Contrary to the “old” Davis draft ways, it makes complete sense to make it known that they are not interested in Maziel. Carr is not a first-round talent and most likely will be available when the Raiders pick at 36 in the 2nd round. They are basically stating their belief Bridegewater and Bortles will be gone by #5 and cleverly shopping that pick.

  36. r81ders says: Mar 2, 2014 7:01 PM

I know reporters don’t watch tape all they do is type the hype. ..we have a Johnny M on the Raiders he goes by the name TP so why the hell will they draft another running QB these retarded reports that come out just don’t make sense watch youtube video highlights on Carr and Manzel you tell me who looks more NFL ready who’s release on the ball looks crispier, who stands the pocket and moves with it, who HANDLES PRESSURE better. Give me a pocket passer any day over any Running QB. A pocket QB tells me he’s reading and understanding D’s way better and he’s smarter in my opinion. Manzel is a smaller QB that runs will not last to long in a NFL beat down no way he can out run those bigger LB’s and take a beating. Manzel or TP=TP, Vic or Sanchez=Sanchez, pic Carr later in draft.

  37. mitybuc says: Mar 2, 2014 7:18 PM

Once the free agent dust settles…mocks will mean a little more.

    Which will still mean nothing.

And nothing being for sure, this is a pretty safe bet.

In no particular order..Clowney, Watkins, Robinson, Mack, Barr, Bridgewater, Matthews, Bortles, Manziel, and Lewan will be the top 10.

If I were one of the “experts”..this would round out an extremely safe/sound top 10 prediction.

Well, our last two draft classes sucked. Pretty sure this one will suck as well.

Re-sign Veldeer, draft Jake Matthews who plays LT & RT at a equally high level, sign Alex Mack and move Wiz to Guard and we’re ready to compete with NFC west defenses. Unless R Jennings is our starting RB. He’ll play well until he shows up on the opponent’s scouting reports.

There was no ascension going on there. It was 8-8 two years in a row with two different coaches, a jacked up cap, and many, many draft misses. I’m not impressed with McKenzie, but if you think 16-16 is something to hang your hat on, you aren’t much of a Raider fan yourself.

This draft is stacked with defensive talent and all of these qbs could drop out of the top ten because the back 22 don’t need them. Speilman will not trade up so puff all the smoke you want. At the end of the day the raiders will draft a speedy reciever because it s like crack to the silver and black all Davis or not.

Firing Hue set this franchise back years. The Flynn trade was a debacle. Especially after only getting a 7th for Palmer. DJ Hayden flopped last season. He has yet to acquire a pass rusher three offseasons into this thing. He has downgraded the QB position. The majority of solid players still on the roster were brought in by Al (Reece, Branch, Veldheer, Wiz, Moore, Seabass, Houston, etc.).

This class reminds me a lot of the 03 class. It appears there are some pretty good DBs and OL.

People always wanted to talk QBs though, like they did with Palmer and Leftwich, and they were great college athletes, but it didn’t seem to transfer to the pro’s well. They were great college players, but some it took some longer to catch on longer than others… and don’t even get me started about Rex Grossman and Kyle Boller.

The Raiders won’t let media in on practices. What sense does it make for the Raiders to come out and say who they like as a QB? He’ll, DA won’t even give specifics on game to game injuries. Who saw DJ as a 1st overall pick? I say Watkins 1st overall and then see what QBs are in 2-3rd rounds. WO’ and O line men are deep and that’s what we need!

Get your boots on, it’s getting deep….Raiders have so many needs that they could go QB, OT, WR, DE/OLB, DB, or DT…..I have no problem moving down …..with that said Carr had a better combine, and looked the best at the senior bowl.
Carr and Bortles are moving up, and Manziel and Bridgewater are hanging…with that said I hope Manziel , Bortles, and Bridgewater are off the board…that leaves one of the two best players in the draft on the board…Clowney, and Matthews.

autumnwind999. When are you going to let the past go? Huh? When? You going to keep crying about two 8-8 years forever? Keep the blame game going on and on?

This team had to broken down. Hue was insane with that trade he made for CP. Gave away draft picks for years to come. Cap out of control!

And you blame RM? With no mention of the mess he had to clean up? If you’re going to cry about the same story, over and over… at least start at the heart of matter. The beginning!
And that was before, RM got here. Yes. His draft skills have lacked since he has been in Oakland.

But, sometimes turnarounds take more than TWO years! This is the one that counts. No excuses. Not tied down, like before. Let the clock tick on him after FA and the draft. But… oh right that would be the logical and fair thing to do… nvm. SMH

Manziel will be a bust so it makes logical sense that he will fall in the draft and then get picked by the one franchise that doesn’t recognize a good QB if it fell in its lap.

The Vikings will blow it again by taking Manziel, this is the same Vikings team that let Aaron Rodgers sit in the Green Room despite the fact that they had two different first round draft picks where they could have snapped him up.

Not to worry though, the Vikings can always fall back to starting Ponder again in 2014.

  87. raiderraffeal says: Mar 3, 2014 2:56 PM

I retract my previous statement after watching video on Carr. If the Raiders are interested in him, they should be able to grab him in the second round after trading down from the 36th pick. Carr needs some serious work. He wears the #4 for a reason. He as all the bad habits of Farve. Throwing off the back foot, not setting up in the pocket/setting his feet before throwing… He has a big arm, I’ll give him that. So not a first round talent.

  88. pftstory says: Mar 3, 2014 3:13 PM

Everyone comments that whatever teams say pre-draft its a smoke screen.
Yet they take their word for it that these 4 teams plus MN are going to forgo better players and open the draft with a QB run.
I’m hearing draftniks grade the top QB as #12 overall. That’s skipping over a bunch of BPA’s to fill a need. Yes QB is an important need, but at the expense of also not filling another need with a BPA? The “second level” QB’s are not grading out that much lower then the top 3.
I expect teams 6-12 are praying hard that all these QB’s really do go this early.
We just watched a team built on its defense win the SB. Are we really going to watch multiple teams pass on multiple high graded defenders for teen graded QB’s? They call it a copy-cat league.

  89. raideralex99 says: Mar 3, 2014 3:59 PM

    Autumnwind999 is actually RIGHT.
What did Palmer do for the Cardinals last year in his first year running a very complicated offence. Yes the Cards have a good defence … weak OL and running game something the Raiders had and still do.
The key is defence …. look at the Seahawks and 49ers. They built a great defence and an average QB can take them to the finals. The Raiders 3 Super Bowl wins were because of their defence not their QB.

As for Reggie … excuses have run out … he can not use the salary cap or no draft picks excuse anymore. What I can’t figure out why Reggie is put on a pedestal … what exactly has he done? I can tell you one thing he has made more mistakes than correct ones …. in school when that happened the teacher always gave a F .

Being right is a matter of opinion!
Just because you agree with someone doesn’t make it a fact. Just means you agree with them.

With that said… i already said excuses are out the window. It’s this year that matters. The mess that was made BEFORE Reggie got here, is now gone.

The Palmer mess made by giving away multi draft choices is ALMOST gone. (Again not RM’s fault)
Over bearing contracts, before Reggie arrived, etc etc. Yet i here nothing about the damage done by those in control years earlier… why is that?

AL Davis. Hue Jackson. Not Reggie, is a large part of why the raiders couldn’t move forward without tearing down this wall of bad decisions and contracts! Yet, some of you blame RM?

    Insane. Bias. Ridiculous.
Can’t blame him without blaming everybody who caused this mess. Especially a mess he didn’t create. right? ohh, but you will find a way to point the finger. Also, the raiders have more cap space now and not an overpaid, over blown contract in the bunch now. But, i’m sure that will be overlooked as well.
For some of you, it doesn’t matter what Reggie does. A fool is a fool. A hater is a hater. Facts just get in the way.

Whatever we do just coach the person right. I’m not a big Dennis Allen fan but let’s see how this year goes. Sometimes it feels like no matter what the player was supposed to be from college, it still ends up bad. Terrell Pryor throws as wild as Barry Zito, and Matt McGloin has heart but I’m not sure how far he can take a team with an average offense, shaky defense, and the fact he’s running back height.

By the way if Charles Woodson wants a ton of cash, shake his hand goodbye and thank him for his services. He’s loved by the fans but barely ever the playmaker stopping drives. Grab a good safety in free agency or the draft. #RaiderNation

autumnwind999.

SMH

    ——————————

RM foolishly picked up an option on Seymour in 2012 that cost a $13M dead money cap hit last season. He essentially traded Palmer and a 5th round pick for Flynn and a 7th round pick. Factoring in dead money the caps hits were basically a wash there.

He’s signed a bunch of vets to 1-year deals which in no way is laying any kind of long-term foundation. And he fired the best coach we’d had since Gruden, a guy who may be better than Gruden because, you know, Reggie wanted to get “his own guy.” That’s a solid reason. Pffft.

McKenzie said ” we were a different 4-12 team this year from last year.” Mark Davis said in response 4-12 is 4-12. McKenzie is gone by the end of the year along with his guy. Just got a hunch

If the Raiders pass on Manziel, that may be the best endorsement of Manziel yet. You could probably be a GM in this league simply operating with the mantra “Do the exact opposite of what the Raiders would do” and be just fine.
