Buccaneers unveil new uniforms, which are really something

Uniform03_03_14_2_a

The Buccaneers unveiled their new uniforms Monday morning, and it appears they may be considering joining the Arena League.

In a Nike-developed redesign even more garish than last year’s Jaguars makeover, the Bucs lifted the curtain on a new ensemble that mixes chrome and orange highlights into the pewter-and-red mix of last year’s uniforms.

According to the team release, the new style is “a new design that honors the Buccaneers’ rich tradition while boldly bringing the team into the future through a modern industrial design aesthetic.”

If someone can find the crouton in that word salad for me, I’d appreciate it.

“Today marks the culmination of more than two years of research and planning to bring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into a new and exciting era of our history,” Buccaneers co-chairman Edward Glazer said in a statement. “We worked closely with our partners at Nike to design a uniform that would set the standard for both design and functionality. The result is a sleek, modern design that honors our championship past while also establishing a new, bolder identity moving forward.”

The team also unveiled a secondary logo, “a powerful wooden ship fueled by wind-filled sails.”

Oddly enough, I thought that was diversity.

Also, thanks for ruining the NFL uniforms Nike

  8. tonyugoh says: Mar 3, 2014 9:18 AM

It wouldn’t look nearly as bad if the helmet logo wasn’t so obnoxiously big and the shoulder pads were white like the rest of the jersey. But since the unis have those features, those look awful lol.

  17. bitw44 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:23 AM

Is Nike’s Jersey design team 13 year old boys using Madden 2007?

The numbers look like an LED clock display.

I hate these Nike uni’s so much. I can’t believe I’d actually care so much but oh lawd.

As an aside, anyone know what those plastic line thingys around the collars of some teams jerseys are? I don’t think every team has them, but a lot of teams do and they look hideous.

  24. elliottcovert says: Mar 3, 2014 9:28 AM

Somehow, the Buccaneers have managed to top the old Bucco Bruce nightmares and create the worst uniform in the history of the NFL.

  25. scoops1 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:29 AM

    Bring Back Bucco Bruce….

or does that offend people of Pirate heritage

  26. summitmech says: Mar 3, 2014 9:30 AM

Apparently the Bucs were worried someone else might beat their most reknown record – that of having the worst uniform in all of NFL history.

This uniform is so aweful-looking that the owners should seriously vote to not allow it. Those uniforms will literally sully the NFL’s image.

Spot on with the Arena Football comment! 100%

  27. r8rsfan says: Mar 3, 2014 9:30 AM

Aside from the helmets these uni’s could also be worn by the Browns. That’s efficiency right there.

  28. jetfan74 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:31 AM

I’ve been praying for my beloved Jets to get some new uni’s but not quite sure I want them to go that route!!!! I’ll give them credit for being bold.

  29. tvjules says: Mar 3, 2014 9:31 AM

The helmets are cool. What lies below are not.

  30. whiteknightblackheart says: Mar 3, 2014 9:32 AM

  31. summitmech says: Mar 3, 2014 9:32 AM

And to be clear, I was referring to the original Bucs uniform as worst-ever. What’s sad is i think the cream orange-popsicle uniforms were actually better than this monstrosity.

  32. milkmandanimal says: Mar 3, 2014 9:32 AM

I just spent two years rooting for a team coached by Greg Schiano, and the prior two years rooting for a team coached by Raheem Morris, and seeing these uniforms is still the worst thing I’ve experienced as a Bucs fan in years.

  33. ballboy48 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:32 AM

Nike uniforms are terrible. Now they’ve completed the trifecta of ruining all of Florida’s uni’s.

  34. FinFan68 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:33 AM

  43. rob471773 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:42 AM

Awful disgusting uniforms, I’d expect nothing less from Nike. They’d rather be shocking than good looking.

  44. naes says: Mar 3, 2014 9:44 AM

Could someone explain to me the ‘rich history of the Buccsneers’?

I remember the couple good seasons and SB in the early 2000’s. And the sweet orange unis that looked like George Michaels. Did I miss something rich and historic?

  45. officialgame says: Mar 3, 2014 9:44 AM

  46. lukedunphysscienceproject says: Mar 3, 2014 9:48 AM

I will reserve judgement until I see them on the field.

I remember very similar “arena league” comments when the Seahawks unveiled their unis with the the day glo green and the futuristic numbers and whatnot. Now alot of people think they are the best looking unis in the league.

    People will always resist change.

How is Nike even still in business? They haven’t made a decent shoe since 1992 and a good shoe since 1989. Everything they have made since makes EVERYONE look like a 3-yr old dressed them.

  50. bucrightoff says: Mar 3, 2014 9:52 AM

Absolutely horrific, I see them changing back in 2 years or less. These are bad for a college team.

  51. paulsmith107 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:53 AM

Well with all things considered kids today who are the NFL’s future live the college uniforms. With that being said nike knows this and the nfl would be smart to let them tinker with the uniforms instead of keeping the same dull drab garb every year

  52. f1restarter says: Mar 3, 2014 9:53 AM

That is the ugliest thing I ever saw. What part of the Bucs’ tradition involved playing in the XFL?

  53. kayakattack says: Mar 3, 2014 9:53 AM

Wow, I thought what they did to the Jaguars was bad… Nike needs to leave the NFL alone

  54. bigginfragable says: Mar 3, 2014 9:54 AM

I was reluctant to give the new helmet props for its new design, but the more I see it the more I like it.

These uniforms however are just terrible. As a Bucs fan, I am finding it difficult to find the words to describe how ugly these uniforms are.

Granted, I have not seen what the red jersey will look like, but the numbers are just awful and ruin what could otherwise be an OK look.

And for all the Non Bucs fans who will be piling on this look and crapping over the team for this change, just wait till Nike gets its hooks into your precious Steelers, Packers and Cowboys jerseys. 3-5 years from now, all teams will have gone through a reimaging of their uniforms.

  55. athwartships says: Mar 3, 2014 9:54 AM

Was it a contest to out do the hidious orange sherbert uniforms?

  56. alderre says: Mar 3, 2014 9:56 AM

You need to realize who is the target audience. Hint: it’s not you educated, middle class white man from suburbia. It’s not anyone with even some exposure to design basics. It’s aimed at he demographic that will stay in line for the next Jordan shoes and risk getting shot. Good job nike

  57. alderre says: Mar 3, 2014 9:58 AM

I know exactly who will buy this jersey.

  58. uwsptke says: Mar 3, 2014 9:58 AM

It’s not supposed to be this hard. You have a white jersey for road games, and a colored jersey for home games (unless you’re the Cowboys). You don’t have a jersey with both. What happens when the Bucs play the Browns? How do you officiate that hot mess?

  59. redsoxchamp11 says: Mar 3, 2014 9:58 AM

I guess I am in the minority here… I like them. The team needed a new look. My only qualm is the numbers. Not real big on those, but otherwise I like the Bay orange accents and the overall layout.

  60. jetsmmt says: Mar 3, 2014 9:58 AM

Just make the logo on the helmet smaller and the uniforms would look pretty cool.

  76. quickdraw85 says: Mar 3, 2014 10:28 AM

We can’t win games…… Let’s distract the fans with a uniform change. Seems like the Bucs are modeling themselves off of the government.

  77. mmacify says: Mar 3, 2014 10:29 AM

As a Vikings fan, I was dismayed by how Nike designed such terrible uniforms for them. Watching Adrian Peterson rumble along in a uni apparently designed by a middle-schooler is a downright shame (as is watching Ponder throw in any uni).

Seeing the Tampa Bay and Jacksonville uniforms, maybe we were lucky!

  78. joetoronto says: Mar 3, 2014 10:31 AM

Calling those uniforms atrocious is a compliment, my God man.

They’re almost as bad as the Bungals uniforms.

  79. trippymane says: Mar 3, 2014 10:32 AM

Why aren’t people bashing on the jets, chiefs, texans, vikings, packers, for having horribly designed/boring/old looking uniforms? Lol the seahawks and bucs now have 2 of the best uniforms in the league, guess what? Their both modern looking designs. Jags aren’t that bad either, although if they went on pure black or gold on their helmets it would look better.

  80. kinggator says: Mar 3, 2014 10:36 AM

  81. trippymane says: Mar 3, 2014 10:37 AM

To quote Tony Mcdaniel, Amazing Free Agent DT of the seahawks

Q: why did you chose to come to Seattle?

A: ” Their a very talented team, and their uniforms are pretty sick”

So while the bucs and seahawks have nice looking modern uniforms, yall can stick with your vomit worthy green/yellow color scheme with the design that an 80 year old grandma could have come up with. White away/solid home?…. STOP let’s get a little creative here. K thanks…

I like the new uniforms. I used to be a traditionalist and thought no uniforms should be altered in the NFL, but recent years have provided some nice changes and tweaks. We see it in college football every year too. I hope they target the Browns next, and hopefully they’ll get a complete makeover with name change. They have the ugliest uniforms in the NFL, and ‘Browns’ just reminds me of poo. If they keep the name Browns, they might as well have a swirly poo logo on the side of their helmet with a few flies circling above it.

  85. truehoosier62 says: Mar 3, 2014 10:44 AM

At one time, the play of the Buccaneers made their fans, (to say nothing of coach John McKay), want to throw up. Their execution, which John McKay was all for, was horrendous. Adding insult to injury, they
wore uniforms designed by the good humor man.
Then came the men in pewter and red, solid Tony Dungy, solid defense, vomitable offense and a Superbowl.
Now, 38 years later, here we are again. A lousy team with a lousier look. This creates an undoubted dilemma now for the average Buccaneers fan. Do they hate the team’s play or their uniforms more? And what about the team’s execution? My guess is that they’re all for it.

  86. BigAlHeBDMan says: Mar 3, 2014 10:46 AM

The secondary logo is actually pretty solid, if you took off the skull & cross swords/football crap.

The redesign would have been MUCH better had they stuck to that logo, cut the orange out of the color scheme, dropped the LED numbering for something a little cleaner, and used the cresting waves from the logo as a border between the dark shoulder pads and light torso.

This design is a step in the wrong direction.

When Nike came on board it seemed as if there was some weird consumer culture of fans that seemed to worship them as if Nike was an NFL team themself. The league redesign was horrendous (neckrolls that look like collared Polos), Seattle looks wretched, Jax adopted what at the time was the dumbest looking set ever, but Tampa really took it on the chin with this mess.
