Johnny Patrick makes it trio of cuts for Chargers

Derek Cox isn’t the only cornerback out in San Diego.

The Chargers confirmed Monday afternoon that they released Cox a year after giving him a four-year, $20 million contract and that fullback Le’Ron McClain has also been excised from the roster. Both of those moves were previously reported and the Chargers added word that they have also parted ways with cornerback Johnny Patrick.

Patrick was claimed off of waivers from the Saints last February and played 13 games for the Chargers before going on injured reserve. He started four times as the Chargers tried to find a corner combination that worked and had 38 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception. The Chargers needed help at corner if Patrick was on the roster, so that remains a likely focus at some point this offseason.

New Orleans picked Patrick in the third round of the 2011 draft, but the fact that he’s been cut twice in three seasons doesn’t provide much promise for his NFL future.
