Jets claim Johnny Patrick off waivers

The Jets are expected to release cornerback Antonio Cromartie at some point in the near future to open up some cap space for free agency.

The move comes four years after they acquired Cromartie in a trade with the Chargers and, assuming it happens, it will come shortly after the team picked up another former Chargers cornerback. The Jets were awarded Johnny Patrick on a waiver claim a day after the Chargers cut him loose.

Patrick was a third-round pick of the Saints in 2011, but was dropped by New Orleans before last season. He wound up in San Diego, where he made four starts and played 13 games before landing on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Cromartie’s expressed interest in returning to the Jets at a lower price if he is cut and Dee Milliner has the other starting job, so Patrick’s probably looking at a depth and special teams role if he sticks with the Jets until next season.
