Report: Vikings interested in Nolan Carroll

Teams have to wait a few more days before they can talk to prospective free agent targets directly, but that doesn’t mean that prospective interest will remain hidden.

Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings are expected to take a “strong look” at cornerback Nolan Carroll in free agency. Carroll’s contract with the Dolphins is expiring and Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the expectation is that he’ll be hitting the open market despite the Dolphins’ interest in bringing him back.

That’s code for the Dolphins’ offer not being high enough for Carroll to forsake a shot to see what the market will offer. He’s started 22 games in the last two seasons and is presumably looking for a salary that befits a starting role in the future.

Minnesota’s secondary was problematic all of last season. Cornerback Xavier Rhodes and safety Harrison Smith should have prominent roles, but the other spots are less certain as the offseason gets rolling.

  1. The Minnesota Vikings always know the best free agents in the market, especially with Defensive Guru Mike Zimmer picking them out.

Any free agent that gets to come to Minnesota is a lucky man.

    The Dynasty continues.

  2. The Vikings secondary will be vastly improved next year.our coaching staff knows what they are doing.meanwhile Turdbay will be stuck with a 25-32 ranked defense like usual.SKOL

  3. Why would Nolan be interested in that pathetic Vikings team?
One of the most irrelevant teams in the NFL.

  4. Vikings know who the best FAs, but then overpay them for what they are worth.

Even if the Packers are injured with a horrible defense.

The Vikings are so terrible they still can’t knock them off the top of the division.

  5. Dude is very average! I haven’t missed a fins game in 30 years. Very avg at best at corner. Gets ate up by bigger more physical wrs. Good luck with that..

  6. Yeah, I’ll bet the free agents will be lining up to play at historic TCF Stadium outdoors.

  7. Lol at Vikings fans.. Take him please.. Only reason he ever started for phins was because of injuries. He couldn’t cover “old McDonald” at a cheap karokee dive. He’ll fit right in with that defense that allowed the Ravens to score 4 TD’s in a 3 minute span last season.. Go get em Vikings.. lol

  8. As a Dolphin fan, Carrol may not be the best player, but he is a hard working guy with no off field issues.
I wish him well and the team signing him.

  9. I took a “strong look” at someone I liked once, resulted in a restraining order and 30 probation. And I was even wearing pants at the time, unlike most Vikings coaches.

  10. Ted Thompson has no interest in him. He is looking to offer Sam Shields 400K a year…

  11. Literally never heard of this guy. But, it feels good that for the first time since I can remember that I think the Vikings coaching staff is finally good enough to coach players up instead of down.

  12. Gee, you don’t suppose this was planted by Carroll’s agent to create a market do you?

  13. Granted, the Viking corners couldn’t cover my grandmother in a wheelchair so anybody else looks good by comparison.

But if the guy sucks like the Phin fans are suggesting, then its a lock that the Vikings will overspend on a declining FA.

  14. Here’s the scoop Viking Fans, Carrol can play very well sometimes, and comes thru with some exceptional play from time to time. But sometimes, he seems to have brain f*rt$. I mean, their is a reason they haven’t offered him more $ to stay. At the same time, he has potential, and maybe with a change, and some different coaching, he can excel. As long as they don’t overpay, it’s worth a shot. I wouldn’t mind my Phins keeping him, but not at what he is wanting to get paid. And as for the Vikings having ‘more upside’, ha! Good one. The Phins were 1 win out of the last two to have a playoff spot, and had virtually NO offensive line. And come on, LEAVE MIAMI heading into winter to go to Minnesota – Better? Sorry dude, you can have that!
