Steelers won’t cut Troy Polamalu to save cap space

The Steelers have been tight against the cap, need to make changes to an aging defense.

But they won’t fix those two problems by cutting veteran safety Troy Polamalu.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Steelers won’t make any move with Polamalu.

They will likely try to rework his deal, to lower his $10.8 million salary cap charge. They’ll need to do so soon, as they’re currently over the salary cap by around $15 million, and are sitting on a $9.754 million charge for transition-tagged outside linebacker Jason Worilds.

While that likely means some long-time stars like LaMarr Woodley are shown the door, Polamalu has apparently reached sacred cow status.

The Steelers have made it clear they want him to retire with the club, with which he has spent all 12 of his NFL seasons.
