Jim Irsay welcomes D’Qwell Jackson to the Colts

The Colts told linebacker Pat Angerer that he won’t be re-signed this offseason and they’ve already found his replacement at inside linebacker.

Colts owner Jim Irsay took to Twitter on Thursday morning to announce that the team had agreed to terms with a new member of the defense and a short time later he pulled the curtain back on the identity of the new Colt.

“Welcome to the Colts, D’Qwell!” Irsay wrote.

That’s D’Qwell Jackson, of course, and his arrival ends a brief tour around the league looking for a new team after being released by the Browns. Jackson will be reunited with last year’s Browns coach Rob Chudzinski, who took a job as a special assistant to head coach Chuck Pagano. Pagano also saw a lot of Jackson over the years when he was on the Ravens staff.

Jackson should plug into the Colts lineup next to Jerrell Freeman and should be an upgrade from what the Colts got from a variety of players filling the position in 2013. The Titans, Broncos and Dolphins also met with Jackson, but will have to look elsewhere for help at linebacker.

UPDATE 9:41 a.m. ET: PFT has learned it is a four-year deal worth $22 million with $11 million guaranteed, though some of that may be guaranteed for injury only.

I liked the signing a lot and then I saw how much they’re paying. Grigson really likes to overpay free agents, doesn’t seem to realize that players are free agents for a reason. Why not sign a much cheaper alternative at MLB?

Not a factor anymore. 1 down linebacker at best. Great guy though

It was Richardson, now it’s Jackson, what’s next? Brandon Weeden vs Andrew Luck?

Seriously, if he stay healty, there will be at least 1 player who can stop the run.

Good luck DQ. Have a great season.

I really thought Chicago should have made a push for Jackson. Briggs, Jackson, Anderson/Bostic could have been pretty solid. I hope they have something up their sleeves to stop the run this season.

I hope it works out, Jackson is a class act.

Press conference will be delayed until Irsay can take a selfie with D’Qwell and post it to his instagram.

I always thought he was underrated. Still a very good linebacker that went under the radar in Cleveland. Good pick up.

From one dumb owner to another!

Colts giving a reprieve to the decent players stuck in oblivion at Cleveland. A restart to a career that was almost dashed.

Paid way too much for a two down player. MLBs are not huge factors in today’s NFL. It’s all about passing.

  20. FlashPatterson says: Mar 6, 2014 1:35 PM

I don’t get why he’s allowed to sign now.. should have to wait for free agency to start imo.

I think someone has missed the last couple Super Bowls. Rushing and defense have proved crucial lately in the playoffs.

DQ will be the best player outside of Luck on a talent deficient team.

Browns never should have let him walk.

Somewhere Luck is cringing… A few year from now we’ll look back and consider moves like this one and the Richardson deal as to why he is leaving Indy. Poor owner and gm…

  28. thelastpieceofcheese says: Mar 6, 2014 3:44 PM

he’s nothing more than an average special teams player.

The acquisitions the Colts have made over the past two years have dumbfounded me. I get that they have a ton of cap room after their roster purge post-Peyton but they have really overpaid some guys: $16 million for Erik Walden, a sub-package or back-up LB at best, $34 million for a mediocre lineman in Gosder Cherilus, $22 million for Ricky Jean-Francois. And it’s not like these moves have helped the Colts. The defense is still a mess and hasn’t adapted to Pagano’s complex hybrid scheme. The offensive line was an utter disaster. Obviously Grigson hit a home run in the 2012 draft with Luck, Ballard, Fleener, and Hilton but the smart thing to do would be set money aside to give Luck and Hilton their huge contracts in the next year.
