Johnny Manziel inks with Nike

Manziel AP

Johnny Manziel’s trip last month to Oregon proved to be fruitful.

Darren Rovell of ESPN.com reports that Manziel has inked a deal with Nike.  Although the terms weren’t disclosed, Rovell reports that the multi-year contract will carry a higher value than any shoe/apparel deal signed by any of this year’s class of rookies.

Nike won a competition that included Adidas, Under Armour, and New Balance.  Manziel’s connection to LeBron James via business manager Maverick Carter likely had a major role in making the connection happen, given James’ ties to Nike.

At a time when Manziel’s football abilities at the NFL level are unknown, Nike is betting on Manziel performing well enough to become a star.  Then again, he already is.

I’m gonna laugh when he’s drafted in the third round and spends the year on the bench, leaving Nike to wonder wtf they just did.

This kid could be worth it. But then again, everyone believed that Tebow would be worth mega-endorsement contracts before playing a single down in the NFL. Good luck with that Nike! Let’s hope they got a cheap deal as an investment in his potential!

Get it while you can, Johnny. Congrats, also.

Shame to see Manziel pull an RG3-13, shamelessly grabbing every unearned endorsement deal possible before proving himself on the field. He should aspire to follow the example of reigning Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson.

I would’ve laughed so hard if Manziel had landed a deal with New Balance.

I judge Nike, and boycott it for pissing money away on this kind of phoney human being.

Haters hate. I hated on him when he was at A&M but never disrespected on his actual gameplay. This kid is what the Tebow blow hards wanted him to be. He has the nack for the big moment but the skill to back it up. Tebow had talent out the world around him, he was made better by the parts around him, the system, this kid made the subpar parts around him better, made his system hum.

As long as he can steer clear of Cleveland the sky is the limit.

A strong, patient, restrained offensive coordinator/offensive scheme, strong offensive line, and a drop back/rollout Johnny Manziel would be very dangerous in the MODERN PASS HAPPY NFL.

Can’t wait to buy the shoes of the short guy who runs around the field like a scared chicken then gets his back broken in half. Yes, Nike, I want THAT pair of shoes.

Yah ok…as Russel Wilson steps into the box to take batting practice at spring training. Good point.

Absolutely!! No matter what happens going forward, he should feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for accomplishing something so few in the world have a chance to experience. Good for him!

Everyone on here who hates on Johnny is just ridiculous. He’s a 21 year old kid who is nationally famous, has espn cameras follows him wherever he goes and just struck a deal with the largest sports retailer on the market. I would say he’s doing pretty well, much better then you are.
