Jon Beason to represent himself in free agency

Washington Redskins v New York Giants Getty Images

Veteran linebacker Jon Beason is going to save himself 3 percent on his next deal.

But he’s costing himself three days in the process.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Giants unrestricted free agent has emailed all 32 teams telling them he’d be representing himself in free agency.

But as a result, teams other than the Giants can’t talk to him until Tuesday, taking him out of the three-day legal tampering window.

For a player who has been through a few negotiations (and a few agents), Beason should be able to well cover his own needs. Other players, including Titans safety Bernard Pollard recently, have gone without an agent to do a deal.

If Beason lands where he wants at a reasonable rate, the savings might be worth it. But a lot of relationships are going to be struck this weekend, even if they’re not consummated, while Beason waits at the altar.

Jon Beason will come to Minnesota as a free agent league minimum contract at a chance to revitalize his career at a historic franchise and a shot to hoist of Lombardi trophy for once on his career.

what that translates too is new york give me what i want and we wont have to go through all this.COME ON REESE YOUR BLOWING THIS ONE PUT HIM UNDER FRANCHISE TAG AND THEN SIGN HIM TO A DEAL.LETS GET THIS DONE.

  4. sportsnut101 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:33 PM

And just hire a lawyer to look over it just in case. Cause teams are sneaky with wording things in the fine print on the 6 th page of deal

  5. greenlantern75 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:36 PM

Not to worry…he (like other potential free agents) have been illegally tampering with teams for a while now….I’m sure he’s already lined up where he wants to go…

  6. billco6192013 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:40 PM

WE DONT SIGN BEASON GIANTS DE IS DONE.NO TUCK ,NO BEASON,= LAST PLACE IN DIVISION AND A DEFENCE RANKED 28TH IN THE LEAGUE.WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO TELL ME THAT PAYZINGER WILL BE THE NEXT BEASON.WHAT A JOKE THE GIANTS ARE BECOMING.CJ MOSLEY OVER RATED BUT IF BEASON DONT GET SIGNED MARK MY WORDS CJ MOSLEY WILL BE THE GIANTS FIRST PIC AND IF YOU WATCH HOW MOSLEY GOT MANHANDLED AGAINST AUBURN ON YOU TUBE HIGHLIGHTS. THEN YOU WILL KNOW THIS COULD BE A BIG BUST PIC.

  7. FinFan68 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:40 PM

Basically, tampering is not allowed but everybody did it at the combine. Now because he doesn’t have an agent he can’t or won’t discuss things with other teams. I say the logic is flawed. Outside of a strong moral conviction to wait or outright fear by 31 teams, conversations will happen

Beason was one of the best MLBs in the world while he was here in Carolina until the injuries started to pile up. I still want to root for him, so I hope he signs with an AFC team.

Well, any AFC team in a city where smoking weed is illegal, that is.

Beason would look great in Viking purple!!!!

For the life of me, I don’t understand why college educated men like Beason don’t represent themselves for often. Well done Jon, we miss you here in NC.

  12. pilot2011 says: Mar 6, 2014 5:04 PM

    more often*

Smart, older player, short term contract – keep the 3% for yourself.

  14. andreboy1 says: Mar 6, 2014 5:24 PM

Take off 90% of Navorro Bowman’s skill and heart and you’ll have Jon Beason.

  15. spliff219 says: Mar 6, 2014 5:25 PM

you would think you would gain by representing yourself, but in the past it hasnt panned out with a lot of players. These agents arent all good, but alot of them know there stuff and can get GM’s to come off more than you can

Should have went with jay z instead

  17. bennyb82 says: Mar 6, 2014 5:30 PM

For 3 percent, I bet an agent gets him a 4% better deal.

Jon Beason’s best moment was when he was a featured artist known as “Big Beas” on the track “7th Floor Crew” with G-reg Olson.

He’ll test the waters and resign with the Giants.

There are guys out there that can’t score over single digits on the Wonderlic which is 8th grade skills at best. I agree there are some smart guys out there but we would all be laughing hysterically if this story was about, say, Chris Johnson.

Tedy Brusci didn’t use an agent… good company.

  23. hrmlss says: Mar 6, 2014 6:14 PM

That almost always works out badly, See Dante Culpepper.

This move paid off huge for Dante Cullpepper, should work for this guy.

Great player sucked that we had to trade him but he was much better off as a mlb then outside lb

  27. theworkhorsebackdotcom says: Mar 6, 2014 6:57 PM

If he’s ready for teams to insult him and critisize his game to his face and able to negotiate his own contract on terms he wants, more power to him.

Depends. In Beasons case, if he is reasonably intelligent then more power to him. Once he finds a deal he likes, call Saul to look over the contract for $150 an hour to point out anything weird then save the 3% minus a few hundred bucks. If more players did this, then perhaps we would stop seeing agents who are convinced they are the real “stars”

  31. besdayz says: Mar 6, 2014 8:47 PM

I don’t understand why players who know they are going to get a minimum contract don’t all do this?

Saves money on a low contract.

Its the players that have a chance at huge contracts that need the agent…to argue guaranteed money etc.

  32. birdbrainsnj says: Mar 6, 2014 8:58 PM

His agent was Marty Magid (dumervil dumbass). No wonder why he doesn’t want an agent blowing his deal.

  33. pilot2011 says: Mar 6, 2014 9:56 PM

agents are ruining the game. Take the Jay Cutler contract for a prime example. Basically 75% of qb’s in the league will now ask for 18 mil a year. That is only hurting the rest of their team and the game as a whole.

Take your 5 million a year and be content.

Michael Jordan was the 5th highest paid player for the Bulls.

Come on Reese get r done

  36. hendeeze says: Mar 7, 2014 3:36 AM

Acting as his own agent, will he still proclaim to be better than Patrick Willis?

  37. John X says: Mar 7, 2014 4:58 AM

Jon, you are in NY the endorsement capital of the world. The Giants win the Super Bowl. The D needs you which will make you a NY Hero. Don’t just be an agent. Be a good one. Jerry Reese work this out please. Best MLB the Giants have had since Pierce retired.

  38. louishatchett says: Mar 7, 2014 10:20 AM

I am here to correct on of my Giant Brothers, Beason is the best MLB we’ve had since Barrow. Pierce couldn’t stop the run like Beason or blitz like him either. Our D will surely suffer without his presence especially if we lose Tuck

  39. billco6192013 says: Mar 7, 2014 4:11 PM

Look we know what beason brings to the table and having Reese just act like oh well he should experience free agency is another way to let all the Giant fans down easy.Reese wake up and smell the coffee , You evaluate players after each season and then what. You let Bennett go now beason , why do we evaluate players and then you sign the keith rivers back.your 1st round pics have been a joke. You could have tagged beason so we could have a chance to sign him bac K but now that’s not happening.I guess I’ll just wait for the next G.m next year. We will suffer terrible next year without beason.
