Report: Saints “shopping” Pierre Thomas, Lance Moore, could be open to Sproles trade

The Saints said goodbye to some longtime defensive players early in the offseason and there could be similar changes coming on the other side of the ball.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Saints are “shopping” running back Pierre Thomas and wide receiver Lance Moore to other teams. Thomas played a prominent role in the New Orleans once again last season, running for 549 yards and catching 77 passes while getting the most work of any tailback on the team.

Trading him would clear $2.9 million from the cap while moving Moore would open up another $2.5 million. It would leave the same amount of dead money on the cap and his trade value may not be great coming off a year that saw him get hurt and lose playing time to other wideouts.

Schefter also reports that the team “could be open” to trading running back Darren Sproles as well, although it’s not clear if that’s something they’re actively considering. Sproles is set to make $3.5 million in 2014 and it’s not clear how the trade talk around one back would wind up impacting the other one.

who will there RB be if they trade sproles and Thomas?

  2. realfootballfan says: Mar 6, 2014 4:24 PM

Are the Saints rebuilding without telling their fans?

  3. thepftpoet says: Mar 6, 2014 4:24 PM

The Saints are disrespectful for shopping these players that have been with this franchise so long and has been a big part of their success.

Classless organization that cheats to win superbowls.

  4. theclink12 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:26 PM

They don’t need one. All they do is throw the ball.

  5. besdayz says: Mar 6, 2014 4:27 PM

Khirey Robinson and Mark Ingram. The guys who had 185 yds combined in playoff win against Philly and 108 yds against Seattle.

Just need a 3rd down scat back but that can be had for much cheaper than they pay sproles who has slowed down and thomas who is injured more.

Well the Saints see teams like the Lions that can’t keep all of these RBs. We have Bush and Bell that played a lot last year, and still have LeShoure and Riddick that didn’t play hardly at all, plus Steven Miller, plus they might draft or sign more RBs, and they still have RB Montell Owens coming back from injury.

The supply of free RBs is high so it could just be that they want to clean out the RB roster and displace that value for a position that is short on talent that is easy and cheap to acquire.

  7. kenny3398 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:30 PM

We still have Khiry robinson, travaris cadet and mark ingram. im sure other rookies will be brought in to compete. yeah they were apart of the 09 champinship season but they are being paid to perform and are not performing. I would say Pierre thomas is the only one but hes old. time to get younger, faster and more dominant if we wanna be a elite team again and make a run at the superbowl.

  8. si1m says: Mar 6, 2014 4:31 PM

What they should have done was not build a 4 running back committee. If they had focused on just 2 RBs at a time maybe they might have a case for trading.

Its like they’re running a “Take a Handoff in a real game!” Sweepstakes with local Louisianans back there. No one is trading for Running Backs in their late 20s/early 30s who never were allowed to have a full workload. They can get them for free when they get cut.

  9. sameer1138 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:32 PM

Niners should trade LaMichael James plus draft picks for Darren Sproles.

  10. chunkderrrty says: Mar 6, 2014 4:33 PM

I guess they’re expecting brees and Graham to play by themselves, on a side not they could get McFadden for cheap and he would thrive with Paytons offense.

  11. craniator says: Mar 6, 2014 4:37 PM

I hope Miami makes a play for him . . . at least that way he won’t kill the Dolphins the way he did on MNF last season.

  12. officialgame says: Mar 6, 2014 4:44 PM

How many players have ever been traded in March? Every team in NFL knows the Saints along with many other teams are up against the CAP and will wait trades out.

  13. jgedgar70 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:52 PM

Shopping Moore makes sense. Kenny Stills blew past him on the depth chart and he’s now expendable.

They shouldn’t shop Thomas. Depending on a ‘Bama running back is a disaster waiting to happen (yes, Packers, that goes for you too). If they do trade Thomas, I will hope that Ben Tate signs there just to harass Ingram. WAR EAGLE!

Meanwhile, the Panthers will win the division again.

  14. chc4 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:54 PM

Mark Ingram is pitiful. What a waste of a draft pick. And worst of all they traded up for him. They should be cutting his sorry butt and keeping Thomas.

5 fumbles, 12 men in the huddle and 4 years later…Viqueen fans still think they beat the Saints in the NFCCG and that the Saints cheated…lord, it must suck being a queen fan.

  16. ugadogs21 says: Mar 6, 2014 4:57 PM

I hope they can restructure Thomas’s contract. He’s been hurt and missed two key playoff games (K’Od vs 49ers a few years ago and a torn pec vs. the Hawks this year)’ but he’s a very dependable player, a lot more dependable than Ingram for sure.

  17. duece5 says: Mar 6, 2014 5:02 PM

Sproles would look great in Viking purple!

None of these players are worth anything without Drew Brees.

  20. doubleogator says: Mar 6, 2014 5:14 PM

I noticed that Sproles didn’t look as quick as the year before. On punt returns had lots of fair catches, and when he did return them didn’t get much. Lance Moore, has been good, but seems to be slowing down to, and Pierre Thomas, gets nicked up quite often, although when he plays he’s productive. I still might not feel too secure with Ingram and Robinson, although they played good in the playoffs…Draft a burner at WR, and find another back that’s younger with quickness, good luck getting anything of value on the trades though.

This is what happens when you have a $100 million quarterback.

  24. flannlv says: Mar 6, 2014 5:26 PM

You can disagree with how Payton utilizes the RB, but you can’t argue he finds talent. Detroit has two of their featured backs who were Saints. It appears Payton is going to rely on Ingram and KRob. Pick up De Thomas in the 5/6 round to replace Sproles. If you don’t adjust your roster you fall behind. The NFL is no place sentementality.

  25. tincansailor981 says: Mar 6, 2014 5:41 PM

Please trade or just outright cut Mark Ingram, please? He sucks and was a huge waste of a first round pick.

  26. johnclaytonsponytail says: Mar 6, 2014 5:43 PM

Saints have a plan that might not look great to some but I’m loving the active progressiveness in not waiting for the bottom to fall out.

  27. schmitty2 says: Mar 6, 2014 6:04 PM

This team is going to have a new look next year. Saints fans will be saying “who dat they have at rb?”

  28. evlonzo272 says: Mar 6, 2014 6:06 PM

I dont understand why everyone thinks were getting rid of everyone to re sign jimmy. We are getting rid of them cause they suck. Will Smith and Vilma had not played in a year. Roman Harper is the worst cover safety in the league. Lance Moore has lost a step and was terrible last year. Thomas is a good running back for us but when the playoffs role around he is ALWAYS hurt and sproles has also slowed down alot. We need to get some cap room and these are the guys who are making good money yet have stopped producing. if you actually watched saints games you would understand these moves need to be made.

  30. mrlaloosh says: Mar 6, 2014 6:39 PM

Pierre Thomas is probably the BEST pass blocking running back in the NFL. He keeps Brees clean.

Does Payton’s offense come with sturdier legs for McFadden?

  32. evlonzo272 says: Mar 6, 2014 7:33 PM

We need to cut down on the running backs. The defense coordinator just says “o look Ingram came in they must be running up the middle” or “sproles is in so they are passing” or “Thomas is in so it’s either a screen or a draw.” We are still a good offense regardless but they are so predictable. That’s why we can’t win on the road.

  33. espo725 says: Mar 6, 2014 8:20 PM

We have Moore’s replacement. Kenny Stills. If not traded Lance is getting cut. We found out Ingram & Khiry can handle the load as they did in the postseason. PT would be missed. He’s a fan favorite but his cap hit isn’t. Sproles is aging, but he’s always a mismatch opportunity. If Sproles gets dished, wouldn’t be surprised if we drafted D Thomas from Oregon. Maybe even 4.26 40 Dri Archer. Anyways, it’s a business & whatever Mickey does we gotta trust it. #MickeyDoWork

The Saints will be out of the playoffs next year.

A ton of subtractions … no additions.

  35. hollerdog1357 says: Mar 7, 2014 1:04 PM

Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson, Travaris Cadet

I’m not happy about losing Sprolesy or Thomas, as I feel they are huge assets, but we are so deep in the back field that it wouldn’t make sense to keep all 5 names on the roster, and with Drew still slinging it like a champ, if we have a decent back field, we can still contend with the best.

Moore is Mr. Reliable, but he’s on the downhill side of his career and just doesn’t get enough targets anymore. With the emergence of Joe Morgan last year and Kenny Stills this year, have a lot of depth there as well. To keep out Cap figures where they need to be, tough decisions have to be made…
