Ryan Shazier blazes at OSU Pro Day

Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier didn’t run the 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine because of a tweaked hamstring.  At his Friday Pro Day, he tweaked it again at the end of the run.

And yet he still covered the 120 feet in 4.36 seconds.  Unofficially.

Yes, a linebacker ran the 40 in 4.37 seconds.  And he weighed 237 pounds, more than the scouts expected.

“I feel like I can gain 10 more pounds if I had to,” Shazier said, via  “I feel good right now.”

At the Scouting Combine, Shazier also sprang 42 inches in the vertical jump, more than anyone.

The buzz is that Shazier has moved into the first round.  Then again, if every player about whom there was first-round buzz was actually taken in the first round, there would be 100 players taken in the first round.

This guy looks like a high pick ; good weak side LB for a 4-3 front.

If there was ever a year to have extra picks, or to trade down and get a couple of extra picks, this would be that year. The amount of starting caliber players who will probably last into the 4th round is amazing.

He’ll be more of a threat in coverage than in pass-rush. Malcolm Smith showed everyone how valuable an OLB who can more than hold his own in coverage can be.

Shazier fits that mold more than any other OLB in this draft. Clowney and Mack will be much more valuable in pass-rush and run-stop, so it all depends on what the GM values more.

Unofficial. During the combine almost all unofficial times were faster than official times. Why does the 40 get so much attention?

  5. mandingo77 says: Mar 7, 2014 6:31 PM

WOW thats nuts for a LB, He surely just helped his stock out big time with that workout and a 42″ vertical. Thats Nasty all the way around and he looks like a greek god in this pic.

  6. 4allintensivepurposes says: Mar 7, 2014 6:32 PM

He looks out of shape. Needs to hit the gym.

  7. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 7, 2014 6:34 PM

I like Shazier ahead of Mack. Mack is just Shazier, two years older, with a couple extra years of bulking up on PEDs.

  8. steel420 says: Mar 7, 2014 6:38 PM

Gimme a break. There’s not a 100 players with 1st round buzz. This guy truly has it, so give him some credit.

  9. bensstinkyfingers says: Mar 7, 2014 6:46 PM

Hey Browns pick this kid at #26 please!!!

  10. loyalraven says: Mar 7, 2014 6:46 PM

    Yeah that’s fast

  11. Stiller43 says: Mar 7, 2014 6:50 PM

Let me guess. Wind aided and the clock operated by his college? Still a freak, but i’d wait for the “official” time

  12. rajbais says: Mar 7, 2014 6:54 PM

Mike Vrabel, you need a LB for Houston.

    Get your ex-player in town.

Vrabel is the LB coach for the Texans.

That’s how I look when I wake up in the mornings….

  14. tjacks7 says: Mar 7, 2014 6:58 PM

    That dude is swole.

  15. chc4 says: Mar 7, 2014 6:59 PM

Workout warrior. Anyone taking him in the 1st will regret it.

  16. jetfanatic says: Mar 7, 2014 7:01 PM

remember Ohio State’s Vernon Gholston…great athlete that never translated to a very good NFL player.

  17. birdbrainsnj says: Mar 7, 2014 7:02 PM

If pryors gone by 22 and he’s still there I want the birds to take him. He’ll wreak havoc as a situational pass rusher year one.

  18. jrs45 says: Mar 7, 2014 7:03 PM

    Beast! Go Bucks!

  19. 2manyconcussions says: Mar 7, 2014 7:09 PM

Looks like a body fat of about 3 percent. The dude looks like a sprinter. I would hate to be hit by this sprinter.

  20. djshnooks says: Mar 7, 2014 7:12 PM

Dude looks like a beast…too bad he is too small for what Buffalo is looking for at LB.

Some team that runs the Tampa-2 is going to get a good player, probably 2nd round.

  21. cnote94 says: Mar 7, 2014 7:18 PM

That’s an unbelievable time for an Lb, unfortunately alot of teams may pay more attention to the fact that he tweaked his hamstring, again.

  22. calhounlambeau says: Mar 7, 2014 7:22 PM

These guys have no money and yet can build their bodies like this in college. They’re definitely not going hungry.

  23. Vim says: Mar 7, 2014 7:41 PM

Never heard of Ryan Shazier! Did he have a good year at OSU?

  24. theptfpoet says: Mar 7, 2014 7:43 PM

It has come to my attention that a lot of you on this board think that I am an idiot. You are correct.

  25. osubrndn says: Mar 7, 2014 7:47 PM

I live in Columbus n graduated from osu, but I never saw a special player, aj hawk n lauanitis were special in college, shazier never stood out to me

  26. granadafan says: Mar 7, 2014 7:47 PM

Holy moley! The US Olympic Bobsled team could use this guy if football doesn’t work out.

  27. gohomeweeden says: Mar 7, 2014 7:51 PM

This guy flies all over the field. Whoever ends up with him is going to get an impact player.

  28. clebrowns216 says: Mar 7, 2014 7:54 PM

This dude is the truth. He was forced into action as a freshman and after that 1 season I said “this dude is gonna be a first round pick”.

The speed is real. He plays at 4.4 that’s not just track speed. And he hammers people. People used to say he was small but I never saw him have trouble tackling. And now he’s 237 which is fine.

This dude has the potential to be the best 4-3 Will linebacker in the league. The athleticism is too real.

  29. ajgreenhof says: Mar 7, 2014 7:55 PM

I picture this guy in Bengal stripes right now.

  30. All-American Voltron says: Mar 7, 2014 7:55 PM

That guy’s almost as ripped and jacked as Favre!

  31. laxcoach37 says: Mar 7, 2014 8:04 PM

Big Deal! Who wants a big, blazing fast, smart Linebacker? The question is… Is he Gay?

  32. Gordon says: Mar 7, 2014 8:05 PM

Whoa! That’s insane. Probably another workout warrior though.

  33. ravenswhat says: Mar 7, 2014 8:17 PM

Is that billy blanks?? Good lord.

  34. 216orangeandbrown says: Mar 7, 2014 8:23 PM

This guy might have hell of a pro day but he is an average LB at best.

    – OSU fan

  35. judd82 says: Mar 7, 2014 8:24 PM

Special talent…Whoever picks him is getting a stud for future years.

That said…Giants please just once get the LB we need.

  36. chex1868 says: Mar 7, 2014 8:37 PM

  37. 10kmp says: Mar 7, 2014 8:39 PM

Beast. This guy is FOOTBALL PLAYER. He will make plays all day long, and will not create any issues whatsoever off the field. Good kid, good family. He’ll be a solid ten or twelve year pro for whichever team is smart enough to draft him…

  38. ghostofgilchrist says: Mar 7, 2014 8:56 PM

You look at a guy like that and wonder how he could *not* succeed in the NFL…then Vernon Gholston pops into my head…

  39. sparky151 says: Mar 7, 2014 9:08 PM

The OSU track is notoriously fast. The 4.37 time is no doubt the fastest hand timed number. It probably translates to about a 4.50 if he’d run at the combine. That’s still pretty fast for a linebacker. Did Roby run at OSU today? If so how did his home time compare to the combine?

  40. cfos00 says: Mar 7, 2014 9:15 PM

Why do I think if the guy peed in a cup, the cup would be able to bench 225 30 times? Oh well, NFL doesn’t care, neither will I.

  41. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 7, 2014 10:17 PM

Put him in the 1st in the mock!

  42. tangysizzl says: Mar 7, 2014 10:31 PM

The late great Al Davis would have loved this guy. Me…not so much. I would be scared as hell to draft an OSU LB at all, let alone in the first round.

Hope someone takes him in the top 20 though.

  43. mickton says: Mar 7, 2014 11:12 PM

It would be awesome if the phins were able to maneuver to get shazier he is a machine.

  44. rjt34 says: Mar 7, 2014 11:51 PM

The next Aaron Maybin!!! Stick w Khalil Mack over this kid, he’s more NFL ready to play today!!!

  45. ovaw8lova says: Mar 8, 2014 8:55 AM

I didnt follow him in college but these numbers will make GM’s look closer at his tape.

  46. kosarsmyidol says: Mar 8, 2014 7:16 PM

Man, he’s inspired me to never take off my shirt again. He’s like the anti-Andre Smith.
