Sam Shields, Packers agree to four-year, $39 million contract

One of the top free agent cornerbacks is off the market.

The Packers and cornerback Sam Shields have reached a four-year, $39 million contract, a league source told PFT’s Mike Florio on Saturday.

Shields will receive a $12.5 million signing bonus, and his 2014 compensation is $15 million. By the second season, Shields is slated to have made $21 million, and the deal is worth $30 million through 2016.

The 26-year-old Shields recorded 61 tackles, defended 16 passes and intercepted four passes in 2013.

Shields was PFT’s No. 15-ranked free agent and the No. 5-ranked player at a strong group of prospective free agents at his position. His departure doesn’t hurt the leverage of New England’s Aqib Talib, Indianapolis’ Vontae Davis, Tennessee’s Alterraun Verner and Denver’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

  1. Seems like the Pack just committed very big bucks to a decent but not top tier CB. My immediate reaction is great – they just overpaid.
Congrats to Shields and his Agent – nicely squeezed. Ted Thompson is walking a bit gingerly.

  2. Sorry Viking fans, your team is going to have to look elsewhere to fix that thing you guys call a “secondary”.

  3. WOW! What a huge sigh of relief that we were able to lock up Shields. I was not very optimistic that Ted Thompson would be willing to pay this kind of money but I am thrilled.
I have loved watching Sam Shields grow as a player since he came into camp as an UFA with blazing speed learning a new position. The sky’s the limit for this guy.

  4. Great move. Ted Thompson used his same method on Sam Shields. Draft late and develop by giving him starting time. Worked out great.

    ————————————————
Ya like Zombo, Bishop, McMillan, Burnett, Datone J, Perry, Worthy………… the list goes on and they are still developing, into what no one knows.

I prefer the Vikes, three rookie pro bowl draft picks in last two drafts. Guys that were skilled enough to be playmakers, start and make the pro bowl.

  5. Another heavily front loaded deal to make sure they have future cap flexibility. Smart cap management again.

  6. Wow, I like shields, but to pay him more than Brent grimes when grimes is the better player, seems a little off. I like the packers, but this move just seems a little desperate.

    “Yes”

    signed,
    Jay Cutler

    ——–

So Jay is looking forward to another Shields interception to knock the Bears out like in 2010 and 2013?

  8. Yeah too much money for this player, he’s just not worth that big of a chunk of the cap. Rejoicing about liking this player locked up isn’t relevant if you aren’t going to also address the player or players that you will never have on account of picking Shields instead. This isn’t a good value move so it’s not worth congratulating the team over.

  9. Fastest CB in the league that can hang during extended pass plays because of zero pass rush. SS is a stud. It’s a lot of money but he’s only played CB four years and he’s only getting better.

  10. Here we go with head scratching contracts. $21 mil in 2 years is a lot of dough for a middle of the road Corner. At this rate, Revis will look like bargain before next season starts.

  11. Solid DB. Has a knack for coming up with timely interceptions. I would take him on my team. Good move GB.

  12. The Vikings roster is better than the Packers in almost every single position.

    Offense:

    Better RB’s – Vikings
    Better WR’s – Tied
    Better Offense Line – Vikings
    Better Tight Ends – Vikings
    Better Full Back – Vikings
    Better QB – Packers

    Now Defense:

    Better Safeties – Vikings
    Better Linebackers – Vikings
    Better Cornerbacks – Packers
    Better Defensive Ends – Vikings
    Better Def. Tackles – Vikings

The Vikings are better than the Packers in every category except 2, therefore making us a more talented roster…

    Case Closed ( )

  13. That’s a pretty high number for the thrifty Packers. Must have wanted him badly. Can’t argue with all those pass breakups and interceptions.

  14. GB can re-sign as many people from that “defense” as they’d like

    Sincerely,
the rest of the NFC North

  15. He made a quantum leap this past year. Sam is still learning and his best is still to come. You can’t teach speed and he has it. Now we can move Hyde to Safety if necessary. Sam was priority #1, now sign EDS at Center.

  16. So, with the baseline for Talib increasing again, the Patriots can either sign Talib or just pay an extra $1 million and spend a draft pick for Revis.

  17. Green Bay will never win another S B after a few more hits Mrs. Rodgers will retire and the cheese heads will be back as the pathetic packers they were in the 70s 80s

  18. the vikings wish they had shields, instead, they can only hope to resign that big hillbilly guy on the end of their D-line. by the way, isn’t minnesota the land of 1000 trailer parks? SKOL

  19. Congrats GB fans but I assume he better play some dam good football these next 2 years for dam near 28 mil…me I think GB paid too much

Do you mean “the rest of the NFC North” who are always looking up at the Packers in the standings, regardless of how poorly the Pack’s defense is playing?

Yeah, I thought that’s who you meant.

  21. Hey pftpoet I really need to know what party you are at right now! Are you insane?!?!? If the Vikes are that much better, why are you consistently in LAST place in NFC North! You guys suck and you are on drugs my friend!

    Signed

    A Bears Fan!

  22. Seems like Packers were bidding against themselves here. No way any other team was going to pay Shields this type of coin. Unless they they just done him a solid and tossed him a few more extra millions due to him playing out his UDFA contract.

  23. It seems like a lot of money for Shields, but he’s only 26 years old. A former wide receiver, he only played one year as a cornerback at Miami. The Packers believe he has not yet reached his full potential. This signing allows the Pack to concentrate on safety/ILB/DL in the draft. Good move by Teddy.

Talking about the Packers who annually have a bottom-10 defense and are only ever in contention because of their quarterback.

Yeah, that is who I meant.

  25. Packers just paid 10 mil a year to the 52nd best corner in the NFL according to ProFootballFocus.

    ———————————————–

how do u know that? free agency began at 12:00. his agent probably spoke with a few teams. grimes got 4 years 32 mil, shields is younger and has more speed. just another jealous viking fan. have fun looking up at us again this year!

  27. What??? If you’re a GB fan I can understand that you wanted Shields back but he just killed your ability to sign anyone else & your defense has several holes to fill. This is a VERY surprising contract by GB. Good player but not worth more than $6 Million a year.

I have no idea what the Packers were thinking paying him more than Grimes who is one of the best CB’s in football. Count Verner, V. Davis, & Rodgers-Cromartie (& their agents) as some of the happiest people on the planet. Grimes just went from ecstatic to pissed off in less than a week.

  28. decent corner, but not worth that much money.. pack will probably cut him in a year or two so they won’t have to pay him all that money.

  29. Timjj

I can’t stand PFTpoet either but since 2002 vikes have finished 4th 3 times. That’s not consistently in last place. Don’t talk down if you don’t know your history book

  30. @doall24 – Obviously I don’t know either way. But like all Packer fans say he was the best player on a sorry Defense. Sam Shields isn’t a top 15 corner. I’m sure his agent just called the packers FO’s bluff, along the lines of ‘we’ll play elsewhere for less if you dont give us what we want type of demand’ knowing the packers need all the help they can get on the defensive side.

  31. As for the safety concerns, my money is on Micah Hyde playing safety full time now that the corners are locked up. Here’s hoping CJ Mosley falls to 21!

  32. The guy that is the acting as a talent evaluator, knows about as much as the guy that figured it would be a good idea to take Ponder with the 12th Overall selection.

That’s funny, I heard Sam Shields say the same thing when Cutler re-upped with the Bears.

I also hope the Viking fans keep bringing on the hate. It must suck to win each and every offseason on paper, only to get your nose bloodied every single fall/winter when football is actually played.

    You guys are hilarious though.

    Sad
    Kingdom
    Of
    Losers

  34. Good for Shields, I think that is a little bit high in price, but that’s what it took to keep other teams from sniffing around him.

Rosenhaus did his job well, and the CBs that are better than Shields probably have visions of an armored truck backing up to their porch this week.

That is, until, more details come up out, like that 39 million the total value of the deal if Shields reaches ALL his escalators.

you don’t know anything, therefore it would be wise to have your facts before saying anything. you don’t know what his agent did or didn’t do. the vikings will always stink and most years we can count on 2 wins a year for sure. thank you.

  37. The Vikings roster is better than the Packers in almost every single position.
    ————————————————
As a Vikings fan, aren’t you a little embarrassed to try and say your team is better on paper?

Let’s take a quick look at history:
2010 – Packers finish 2nd to Chicago in the division. They end up having to play in Chicago for NFC championship. They win that game, and go on to win the Super Bowl. Minnesota LAST.
    2011 – Packers finish 1st. Minnesota LAST.
2012 – Packers finish 1st. Minnesota finishes 2nd. Packers put Minnesota out of the playoffs.
2013 – Packers finish 1st. Minnesota LAST. AGAIN.

The Packers are the division winners 3 years in a row. But you know what? They aren’t happy about that. They are trying to win the Super Bowl. Each year, only 1 team does that. This year it was the Seattle Seahawks. Good for them. They earned it. I think most every team is a bit envious of a defense that plays like that.

NFL Championships are what really counts:
Green Bay – 13 (#1 all time including 4 Super Bowls)
    Chicago – 9 (#2 all time, 1 Super Bowl)
    Detroit – 4 (0 Super Bowls)
    Minnesota – 0

But, hey, post some position matchups on every article. To make yourself feel better? I guess?

Maybe you’re right… What else do you have to look forward to?

  38. I heard next year when they get introduced at their first game, doink the clown is gonna drive the defense out in a clown car and fabio and the ten losers will pile out of the trunk.

  39. Anybody that is hating on this deal has not watched him play. I have studied Shields and this kid is as at the top of his position. Everybody knows the popular names because you read what national guys that watch a select few plays and make determinations. Learn the position, study the position and then come back and talk. Now here come the trolls…

  40. He held his own against AJ Green and Calvin Johnson… didn’t shut ’em out, but he did well enough as a no.1 corner last year.

Even when he had “safety help” – he was basically still alone out there.

    —————————————
The “10 losers” have consistently owned the bears, vikings and lions this last decade… I’d wait until my team stepped up and won more than a game against my rivals (when Rodgers was out w/ an injury) before I’d talk.

  42. how is greg jennings working out for the vikings? glad you guys gave him all that money, we didn’t need that clown, he looks good in purple! SKOL

and it must suck to play one more game than the raiders or cleveland. also 39 million to grab and hold…ridiculous

  44. why would minnesota want the finger wagger? also where are all the l.a. vikings comments. oh thats right, the pilings and some of the concrete work is done on new vikings stadium. i will bet any one on here they do not move to l.a. want to take the bet?

  45. the vikings will always stink and most years we can count on 2 wins a year for sure. thank you.
    ———–
    @doall24
Not rocket science to know that the Packers overspent on a player, since it was known they were negotiating with him for weeks all the way up until this point to no avail. Clearly the Packers felt they had to reluctantly overpay to prevent him from hitting the market, otherwise this saga would’ve been sewn up weeks ago. BTW, not a sorry Vikings fan, I’m a fan of the NYG, you know the same team that Eli, Nicks, Manningham and Cruz torched Shields and Co’ in our recent Superbowl-winning season not once but TWICE! Gosh 07′ and 11′ were so sweet end the Pack’s season in their own stadium on the way to winning our 3rd and 4th rings.

  46. I understand the anger of Viking fans. Green Bay fans get treated like NFL royalty by the national media, while Viking fans are the peasants of the NFL.

    _____

I know right? Now they ONLY have $21 million under the cap this year (still in the upper half of the league I imagine)… Just enough to re-sign pretty much the rest of their free agents and their draft picks and maybe even some key role players. What losers!

  51. Green Bay has a lot of work to do in order to strengthen their team. They were a completely different team last year without number 12 in the lineup. Never forget, Packer fans, you are one injury away from a late season 26-26 tie AT LAMBEAU and a 30 point loss at Detroit. “Pride cometh before the fall…”

any team is a completely different team without their starting QB. take peyton manning away from the broncos and how good are they? take drew brees away from the saints and how good are they? i do agree, the packers have some work to do on defense to strengthen the team.

  53. So entertaining to watch the Packers fans cling to times gone by. Clearly they’re coping with the realization of their slide from grace, again. Welcome back to the 70’s Pack “fans”. Real fans stand long and true. Pack “fans” ebb and flow like the tides. Watch and see how quiet they become after a few more years of nothing. The ridiculous chest-thumping is almost gone again for a couple of decades, thank goodness!

  54. doall24: Yes, but my point is that I think the Packers fall off even more without Rodgers than most other teams. That 30 point loss at Detroit ought to be sobering.

  55. OK, seriously. Does somebody have his agent’s number? I’m also 5’6″ 160# and have never played at a high level either. I’m looking for about 10-12 million on a 2 year deal. Should be a piece of cake for a shark agent like this.

  56. Ted Thompson pays his own players big contracts…that is how you get loyalty from your players…instead of paying street free agents. Good signing.

  57. He’s probably worth 7.5 million, they overpaid because they had to. Despite what we think his talent warrants, another team also would have likely overpaid for him and The Packers could not afford to lose him. Will be tough enough to fix their existing holes in the draft without losing their most promising corner.

  58. The queens only wish they had a player of their own that was good enough to deserve that kind of money. Because of the incompetence of spieldope they are forced to pay 9 million for a declining receiver who caught 60 something passes last year not to mention get outsmarted by a journeyman qb for 10 million for 2 years whom they had to beg to come back. How about the 25 million bust Carlson who was cut after 2 years. Then there is the 2 million dollar fiasco with Freeman for a half a season and he played what 1 game. Then there is…..well we all know.

Teddy drafts so well the the Vikings wait on baited breath to scoop up any of our sloppy seconds. Embrace The Suck and let the dynasty of futility live on for another 53 years. How pathetic is that!

  59. Seems like a lot of dough at first but give it time, soon it won’t look like a bad deal at all.

  60. Sam Shields is the best player on the Packers defense and he’s only 26. Corners slow at 30 and it’s a 4 year deal. Love it, happy to see it.

  61. For those that feel he’s just a mid level defensive back: Shields vs. A.J. Green, Josh Gordon, Brandon Marshall and Calvin Johnson in six games during 2013 allowed 8 catches, 129 yards, 1 TD.

  62. No way Sam is worth that kind of dough. The thing is, some other team would have signed him to something close to that. He has talent, but not that much talent.

  63. Great move by Ted. If Shields comes to play, he’s worth it. In two years, if he doesn’t pan out, the cost is not that great.

  64. Good job Ted, $15 for Shields, $13 for Mathews and $22 for Rogers. That’s $50 mil on 3 guys or almost 40% of the teams cap space. He either cuts guys or lets them go in free agency and plugs in another mediocre free agent/6th rd pick. A bad defense now has 2 guys locked up that can play. I think you need 11 on each side, but I might be wrong.

  65. Grimes set the market. Who would you rather have for the next four years? A 5-10 31 year old at 8 mil, who’s going to be declining each year, or a 5-11 speedy 26 year old at 10 mil who’s best years are in front of him?

  66. Good move but no one would’ve paid him that much should signed Davis or Byrd at safety. And waited out on shields. He’s fast but can’t stay healthy that’s number 1.

  67. Another piece of the puzzle locked up by a true genius GM keeping his home grown talent thus keeping the Pack perennial division champions.

  68. TT way overpaid on this one, this guy is avg at best. Shields was the guy in coverage against the Bears when he gave up a 67 yard pass to Jeffery and a 37 yard pass to Marshall.

  69. Decent player at an elite price.

I bet teams all over the league are pissed off about teddy overspending like that. Now all the other decent corners will be looking for a lottery ticket.

  70. I hope Ted Thompson is happy. By resigning this 2nd-tier corner to an inflaited contract he just closed 50 trailer parks and put a bunch of Green Bay hicks on the street. These morons do “own” the team after all! Lol!

  71. Wow did TT overpay for Shields. The deals before and since confirm that readily.

Shields $10m/year. Ranked #52 CB in the league last year by Pro Football Focus.

Verner: $6m/year. Ranked #12 by PFF

Munnerlyn: $5m/year. Ranked #11 by PFF

Even Revis only got $12m/year from the Pats, and he’s the top rated CB in the league.

Packers now have almost $20m/year tied up in Shields and Tramon Williams- genius!
