Bucs are shopping Darrelle Revis

After the Buccaneers hired Lovie Smith, we explained that the decision could end the Darrelle Revis experiment in Tampa.  And we promptly were shouted down on Twitter and elsewhere as idiots, crackpots, and/or nincompoops.

While we still indeed may be those three things (and more), our analysis of the Revis situation won’t be proof of it.

Per a league source, the Buccaneers are actively shopping Revis.  The development was first reported by Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, who explains that the Buccaneers are “stepping up” efforts to trade Revis.  This implies that they previously were trying to trade him.  Before Monday, they apparently weren’t.

There had been a theory in league circles that the Broncos and/or the Patriots were trying to shake Revis free from the Bucs.  Suddenly, the story is that the Buccaneers are affirmatively trying to move him.

And here’s an intriguing angle.  While it’s believed that the fourth-round pick that the Buccaneers owe the Jets to complete the trade becomes a third-round pick on the third day of the league year, it’s possible that the draft pick accelerates at 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.  (We’re currently trying to nail that down.)  If true, this means that, if the Bucs trade Revis, they need a deal that compensates for the loss of a higher pick, since there’s no way to trade him before the draft pick upgrades.

Revis also is due to receive a $1.5 million roster bonus on Thursday.

So since the Broncos and Patriots were believed to be interested in trading for Revis, they’ll now try to do it, right?  Not necessarily.  Now that the Bucs have decided to move Revis, the Broncos, Patriots, and any other interested teams may decide to wait for the Buccaneers to cut Revis, which may be the team’s only option now that the trade cat is out of the bag and clawing up the furniture.

One way or the other, it looks like Revis will end up being a one-year player in Tampa.

    Good Luck!.. seriously good luck.

    This is so dumb.

The Tampa 2 is a dead scheme. OC’s figured out you just flood the zones and it’s problems are handled easily.

If Revis is healthy he is a true difference maker and makes everyone on your D much better.

  3. primenumber19 says: Mar 10, 2014 8:58 PM

Best cb in the league, I hate it when coaches overlook talent because it doesn’t fit their scheme. Well scheme is not as important as players.

howie will give them a 7th rounder if he takes a pay cut to 1 mill a yeat

I think it’s safe to say that the Bucs are the new “factory of sadness” w/ those horrendous new uniforms.

Oh New England, please send me to Revis Island.

What was your all-time favorite Revis/Buccaneers moment?

  9. skolvikings58 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:03 PM

The patriots would save money by signing Verner AND Talib

  10. dfwhawkguy says: Mar 10, 2014 9:04 PM

Revis may cover the island but Sherman covers the rest of the planet. Does anyone actually even want this guy anymore?

  11. bearfan34 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:05 PM

Peppers for Revis…. Bucs sign Tillman. Lovie gets his boys. Makes too much sense not to happen.

  12. bucrightoff says: Mar 10, 2014 9:06 PM

Yeah trade VJax and Doug Martin too while they have high value, cut Mike Williams and just tank hard for Jameis next year. Because trading Revis means the Bucs are back to a nearly historically awful secondary (17 yards short in 2012 before Revis arrives and they are middle of the pack just by him arriving), and it’s gonna be 4-12 anyways.

  16. suckleague says: Mar 10, 2014 9:10 PM

So let’s review. Tampa Cuts Michael BennettPays Derrell Revis 15 million dollars to heal up so he can go play for another teamI can’t fathom why I haven’t paid for season tickets since 2007.

  17. jermainewiggins says: Mar 10, 2014 9:10 PM

What is going on this offseason?? It seems like a bunch of GMs were wasted last offseason (or a few seasons prior) and are trying to fix moves they completely regret making.

  18. Buick McKaine says: Mar 10, 2014 9:10 PM

And the Bucs will include prime Fla. swamp land as part of the deal.

  19. charmcitychampions says: Mar 10, 2014 9:11 PM

16M is just idiotic to pay 1 cornerback.

  20. bearshaterseverywhere says: Mar 10, 2014 9:11 PM

Give you Peppers straight up, Lovie you brought him and his 90 million contract to Chicago, you can have him. …and Revis needs to take a huge pay cut…btw!

  21. greensbirds says: Mar 10, 2014 9:11 PM

Bucs, Browns, Raiders, Vikings and Redskins makes our empty trophy case seem not so bad. Fly Eagles Fly

  22. 1rockyracoon says: Mar 10, 2014 9:12 PM

A highly paid diva. The teams will be lining up.

  23. realfootballfan says: Mar 10, 2014 9:15 PM

Carolina, besides thier strange desire to cut Steve Smith with no backup plan at receiver as of now, should be at the front of the line on this. Revis and a couple of more role DB free agents and draft picks plus that front 7 would be a sight to see. However, the Bucs probably wouldn’t trade him in the division.

  24. minilb says: Mar 10, 2014 9:15 PM

Peppers for Revis would be a solid swap for the $$, given back the 6th rnd pick we got for Carimi to seal the deal.

  25. devasher says: Mar 10, 2014 9:15 PM

Not that I agree with trading away Revis for peanuts…but I certainly didn’t agree with paying the guy 60% more per year than the next highest paid corner in the league and giving up the draft pick that landed Sheldon Richardson (ROY) in the process as well as this year’s 3rd or 4th.

Dominik, I hope you find a nice TV gig and refrain from ruining other people’s franchises in the process. Or just run the Falcons. I can deal with that too.

  26. strokinmyego says: Mar 10, 2014 9:15 PM

I just don’t get how the Patriots are being connected to Revis. Belichick has never spent more than 8-9 million a year on a corner. Revis makes 16 million or something like that annually.

The Patriots never spend much money on any player (which is both good and bad) but corners have been a position that Belichick specifically has refused to pay top dollar for time and time again. From Law to Samuel and now Talib.

  27. raynman49 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:15 PM

    Patriots. No brainer.

  28. erikthredd says: Mar 10, 2014 9:16 PM

    AdamSchefter Adam Schefter
Short of a trade in the next two days, the Buccaneers are expected to release CB Darrelle Revis by 4 p.m. Wednesday, per league sources.

  29. raiderapologist says: Mar 10, 2014 9:16 PM

Still the league’s best corner. Not worth 16M and draft picks, or whatever he costs, but real good.

  30. dolphinfan17 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:17 PM

They trade away a first rounder and give this guy a big contract. One year later, they’re shopping him. Keep this stud, and get your moneys worth. Your not getting that value back in a trade.

  31. JackedUpSports says: Mar 10, 2014 9:17 PM

back to the jets. now THAT’S somethin

  32. canetic says: Mar 10, 2014 9:18 PM

How can they afford to give up a player who had 2 interceptions last year? That’s only $8 million per. Watch the suitors line up….

  33. rkov says: Mar 10, 2014 9:20 PM

    The Bucs. Lol

  34. ravensbob says: Mar 10, 2014 9:20 PM

  36. noleitup says: Mar 10, 2014 9:22 PM

I really hate being the lauging stock of the league. Besides maybe the jags we are the worst team in the league. Revis could definitely work in the Tampa 2 but it seems the people making decisions want to make sure we remain in mediocrity forever. I hate and I mean HATE the glazers. Stop effin with the people of Tampa and sell the team to Debartolo. I dont like to post when im drunk but I had to get this off my chest

  37. 216orangeandbrown says: Mar 10, 2014 9:24 PM

    Has been.

  38. bennyb82 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:25 PM

There are 16 million reasons not to trade for him…

  39. 216orangeandbrown says: Mar 10, 2014 9:25 PM

    He is balding.

  40. seatownballers says: Mar 10, 2014 9:27 PM

Hope you didn’t buy his jersey

  41. rubefan says: Mar 10, 2014 9:27 PM

If the Vikes can get ahold of Verner, it would be great to bring Revis in with Rhodes. To much QB talent in the division to go with the rejects that have been around the last 5 years.

  42. darcrequiem says: Mar 10, 2014 9:27 PM

Somebody will trade for him. None of his remaining salary is guaranteed. That makes it very easy for the team that acquires him to come up with a cap friendly deal.

  43. seatownballers says: Mar 10, 2014 9:28 PM

Patriots cut 7 guys within the last hour. What’s that mean?

  44. scw1993 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:29 PM

I suppose they should send him to the ravens. It’s only fair. With all the raven arrests so far, maybe he and a few others could field a team of sorts.

  45. coltzfan166 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:35 PM

And now we know which team is close to signing Vontae Davis

  46. allhailkingflacco says: Mar 10, 2014 9:35 PM

Trade ? Are you kidding me ?

    Any NFL GM: “Hello ?”

Bucs GM: “Hey, just checking to see if you’re up for taking on a 16mil per year contract, aka Revis Island?”

Any NFL GM: ” Ha ha ha ha ha …click”

  47. Big Ant TV says: Mar 10, 2014 9:35 PM

Id love too have him in cleveland

  48. hscorpio says: Mar 10, 2014 9:36 PM

Oakland needs a shot in the arm and has more cap room than they can possibly spend….unless they do stuff like throw around $16 mil for Revis.

  49. pantherfan40 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:43 PM

    hope he leaves the south

  50. pantherfan40 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:45 PM

    imagine he goes to seattle

  51. alskdh says: Mar 10, 2014 9:53 PM

We don’t allow slouches in New England, sorry Revis.

  52. dlk47823 says: Mar 10, 2014 10:18 PM

Its probably going to be around 12-13 mill after he’s released. Not sure the Pats pony up the dough. Wilfork would have to go. Jets can afford it and he and Rex still get along,

  53. aldavisjr says: Mar 10, 2014 10:46 PM

    Revis will be a Raider!

  54. stevemad says: Mar 10, 2014 11:39 PM

  56. campcouch says: Mar 11, 2014 12:57 AM

Thanks for the info, but any smart GM will wait until they release him. There weren’t any trade inquiries previously so why would anyone give up anything for a guy getting cut.

  57. oldcracker says: Mar 11, 2014 6:24 AM

Revis for QB We-done, straight up!
