Vontae Davis close to a deal, not with Colts

Cornerback Vontae Davis is indeed close to a new contract. But it may not be with the Colts.

Per a league source, Davis is expected to sign a deal on Tuesday, the first day of free agency. At this point, it likely won’t be the Colts.

The situation is fluid and dynamic and subject to change, as evidenced by the fact that, as of last night, there was a report that Davis was close to re-signing with the Colts.

For now, he’s not. He’s close to signing with someone else. And he could do just that on Tuesday.

Grigson is absolutely terrible. Aside from lucking into Luck, what has he done exactly?

Makes me wonder if the so called “league source”, might just be Davis’s agent trying to run up the price on the Colts.

They gave up a 2nd round pick for a guy who was there only 2 years. Jeff Ireland pulled a fast one on Jim Irsay. Doesn’t say much for Irsay!

miami just cut patterson and saved $5.5 mil, i wonder if it was to bring him back, grimes and davis would be pretty awesome.

  34. dolphinstruth says: Mar 10, 2014 6:14 PM

I wish Vontae would come back to Miami. Oh wait. Our brilliant coach already got rid of him because he committed a meaningless penalty in an unimportant scrimmage game.

“They gave up a second round pick for a guy who was only there two years.”
No , they gave up a second round pick for a guy who has only been there for a season and a half.

You do remember Grigs was Executive of the Year just two years ago…picked Luck over RG3, drafter Fleener, Allen, Ballard in first year, traded for TY Hilton and plucked stars from the CFL… last year not so good, but far from being fired soon

  40. beefsbrother says: Mar 10, 2014 6:40 PM

  42. dynasonic says: Mar 10, 2014 6:48 PM

I don’t know much about contracts but isn’t this Tampering? Surely the Redskins and Cowboys should lose a draft pick over this.

  43. Norseman says: Mar 10, 2014 6:55 PM

With Verner choosing the Broncos, Spielman paid Davis to get him away from the Colts.

    Welcome to Minnesota Vontae!

  44. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 10, 2014 7:06 PM

He’s overrated , he wants 10 mill a year, gave up 8 tds, constantly got burnt, let him go Griggs , he’s inconsistant

  45. kane337 says: Mar 10, 2014 7:15 PM

    Future Falcon

  46. andreboy1 says: Mar 10, 2014 7:17 PM

I wouldn’t brag about my GM picking Fleener with the first pick of the 2nd round. Dude has been a major disappointment so far.

Grigson also signed do-nothing, career backup Ricky Jean Francois to a 4 year 22.5 Mil. deal.

And I saw Trent Richardson get tackled by a lineman that was literally laying on his back last year.

  47. dontbugmeonsundays says: Mar 10, 2014 7:28 PM

He’s a solid cb. Doesn’t blow you away but he holds his own and is a tough sob

  48. 1unnamedsource says: Mar 10, 2014 7:37 PM

Wow really went out on a limb with this one. I would venture to guess that most of the top flight free agents are close to signing deals, like within 20 hours close.

  49. tedmurph says: Mar 10, 2014 8:25 PM

He had a chance to resign with an up and coming contending team and didn’t. My guess is someone blew him away with big money, so it wasn’t so much about winning. First guess Raiders, 2nd guess Washington.

  50. jersey73 says: Mar 10, 2014 8:33 PM

So he will sign with another team on the first day of free agency? Yeah, no tampering here, right?

  51. Robert Chandler says: Mar 10, 2014 8:34 PM

Since I wanted the Vikings to draft him back then, I sure hope he finally wears purple and gold… tomorrow!

  52. winstonjed44 says: Mar 10, 2014 8:34 PM

Wow this is disappointing. Davis can be inconsistent, but talent wise he one of the better corners in the league and always takes the other teams best wr. He is by far the Colts best corner in an already weak secondary, so unless Grigson can sign at least two good corners, this seems like a mistake.

  53. ryanmelick1 says: Mar 10, 2014 8:47 PM

    Jacksonville!

  54. ubepunkedagain says: Mar 10, 2014 9:29 PM

Solid move getting away from Indianapolis while he can.

  55. jimfix says: Mar 10, 2014 9:46 PM

the pierre garcon of DBs. looks like a stud, will get paid by someone like a stud, is not a stud. the colts have the money to re-sign him, if they don’t bring him back, there is a reason (see: vontae casually jogging behind tavon austin for two tds, etc)

  56. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 10, 2014 9:51 PM

    Its the Jets

  57. jpalughi823 says: Mar 10, 2014 10:06 PM

as a colts fan, goodbye. he’d break up a play or two but i saw him get torched plenty

  58. billsfan1 says: Mar 10, 2014 10:54 PM

They gave up a 2nd round pick for a guy who was there only 2 years. Jeff Ireland pulled a fast one on Jim Irsay. Doesn’t say much for Irsay!

are you talking about the guy they drafted in the first round and 3 years later traded for a second round pick? your argument is crap….

Ireland was the NFL’s version of Garth Snow.

  59. boltsmobilecutlasssupreme says: Mar 10, 2014 11:02 PM

Chargers make sense with Tom Telescos connection to Indy, and the need for a descent cb.

  60. jbeagles23 says: Mar 10, 2014 11:30 PM

Hope tomorrow at four these deals start rolling in

  61. thelucknessmonster says: Mar 10, 2014 11:34 PM

If Ryan Grigson let’s him walk he must go after Darrelle Revis once the Bucs release him

  62. haraldsigurdson says: Mar 10, 2014 11:42 PM

I’d almost bet anything he’s going back to Indy. This piece of information sounds too much like an agent trying to improve bargaining position.

  63. andrewluck12 says: Mar 10, 2014 11:57 PM

let him walk and trade next years 2nd rounder for revis

  64. slaugin says: Mar 11, 2014 12:40 AM

Isn’t this the tampering period? I may be wrong but teams are allowed to talk to pending free. Gents right now

  65. coltsaddict29 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:07 AM

Grigs don’t like to give good money to good players, he’d likes to overpay for terrible players. He’s had one good draft and since has looked completely clueless, especially if he don’t sign Davis after he went and signed D. Jackson money that could have been put towards Davis our top CB which is a position that is way more important than LB.

  66. coltsaddict29 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:26 AM

MikeyFins it’s Grigson who made the trade not Irsay, Irsay isn’t dumb enough to try to be owner and GM like Jerry Jones.

  67. coltsaddict29 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:48 AM

Kramtrah he was executive of the year in 2012 and deserved it but Scott Pioli won executive of year in like 2010 and was fired 2 years later. Point is just cause he had one great draft don’t give him a pass for overpaying terrible players during FA and trading for T-Bust last year and having a horrible draft too. I think this is his last year to prove him self and he needs to have a really great draft and sign some difference makers in FA, and if he don’t he needs to be fired.
