Report: Browns extend four-year offer sheet to Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins

Who’s up for a little in-state restricted free agency intrigue?

Albert Breer of NFL Network reports the Browns are tendering Bengals RFA WR Andrew Hawkins an offer sheet and that Hawkins will sign the offer.

According to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal, the offer sheet is for four years.

The Bengals will have seven days to match the offer. The Bengals tendered the 28-year-old Hawkins at the right-of-first-refusal level in restricted free agency, meaning they will not receive any draft pick compensation if the receiver departs.

The 5-foot-7, 180-pound Hawkins has hauled in 86 passes for 995 yards and four TDs in three seasons with Cincinnati. His quickness makes him a challenging player to deal with in space, and the Browns would likely use him as their primary slot receiver.

A University of Toledo product, Hawkins played for the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes and appeared on the reality show “Fourth And Long” before joining the Bengals.

Now, he appears in line for a nice pay bump, whether it’s in Cleveland or Cincinnati.

The cost saving gamble of not using a higher tender looks like it failed. Hawkins is a solid player in space, but that’s it. Good luck to him if he leaves.

Browns are getting serious about building a contender. Spend, spend, spend . . .

The Browns are pretty aggressive at everything except finding a QB. They look like idiots running around with fists full of cash willing to overpay anybody who’ll give them the time of day.

Wow. The Brownies have been hijacking the headlines all day today! This creates some intriguing possibilities for where they might go in the draft…

Hawkins in the slot, Gordon on the outside then draft WR Sammy Watkins and you have a VERY potent passing game.

I’m a Ravens fan but good for him. He clearly has earned it.

The kid is a player. Hope it works out for the Browns. Not sure if the Bengals want to spend the money.

  15. timmons94 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:07 PM

Those sneaky browns… Big money spent today. Still a 5-11 team here. They really are a joke. Joe Haden most overrated corner in nfl. Antonio brown abused him

hawkins is a beast. Wish he would come to tampa. Tedford said he wants speed and moves in space. This guy had all the above and a little more.

    Five foot seven?

  18. daltongang1 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:13 PM

This will definitely motivate Mike Brown who hates the Browns to use that cap space to steal Their center Mack.

  19. titansfan12 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:14 PM

Wow he still stays in state. Goes from University of Toledo to Cincinnati to Cleveland. That’s pretty interesting! But great sign for the Browns!!

Looks like Jakec4 is a tad jealous. The Browns are doing what they need to do FINALLY and hopefully will allow Hoyer to resume what he started. Will it work??? Who knows. But at least for once they aren’t sitting on their ass watching everyone else get better. They are right there.

The Browns are this years Dolphins, spend, spend, doesnt really mean much in the grand scheme of things. I will give them this though, they are creating a buzz to get the fanbase excited. Manziel coming up next.

Good little slot, put a QB in that backfield and they may have finally found something. Can’t lose Alex Mack though unless they draft Johnny F. If they bring in someone like Schuab they will need a little
    continuity on the line.

Can’t wait for the Tribe’s return to the postseason…..

  24. nflfan55 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:37 PM

Uhm… Let’s not get it twisted he was VALUBALE when he got the ball last year. Also remember he is still in the AFC north which means the bengals will play him twice and there is NOBODY on the team that can guard him! Don’t believe me? Check the tape. Google Andrew Hawkins 1 on 1. He was murdering everybody on the roster

  25. sutterbutter29 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:06 PM

Over rated corner are you kidding me! He went up against every teams best wide out and only
    Let 2 touchdowns on home
The whole year.. He only let 2 TD’s the whole year counting against all nummber one slot wideouts! AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, ect.

  26. brownsmakemecrazy says: Mar 11, 2014 9:55 PM

Please Cincy match the Browns offer. Looks like same ole dumb ass Browns. This guy is nothing. Dansby thumbs up, whitner 2 thumbs down, hawkins 2 thumbs down

  27. dawgpound2009 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:00 PM

Anyone is an improvement over Davone Bess assuming there is a major QB upgrade too.

  28. bonniebengal says: Mar 12, 2014 7:00 AM

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Bengals plan to match this offer. Great news if it is true.
