Buccaneers agree to terms with Alterraun Verner

The Buccaneers didn’t want Darrelle Revis. But they did want a big-name, big-money cornerback.

Free agent cornerback Alterraun Verner, formerly of the Titans, has agreed to terms on a contract with the Buccaneers. It’s a four-year, $26 million deal with $14 million guaranteed, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.

Verner is the No. 10 player in our Free Agent Hot 100, and he’s a great addition to the Buccaneers and to new coach Lovie Smith’s defense. It’s also a significant surprise: Few people saw this one coming.

Revis will not return to the Bucs, and barring a last-minute trade, he will be released on Wednesday. Now the Bucs have their No. 1 cornerback. And he’ll cost less than half as much as Revis.

Still not better than “The Great Him,” #25.

Coach Frazier must be smiling after that signing.

  3. sixchr says: Mar 11, 2014 9:32 PM

Funny how the Jets vanished from all reports about these cornerbacks once it came out that Revis would be cut… I would LOVE to see him in New England.

  4. bucrightoff says: Mar 11, 2014 9:32 PM

A little salvage to a disasterous situation. He’s not Revis but I guess if Lovie insists on running his usual D Verner is about as good as can be done.

  5. andreboy1 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:33 PM

    Great signing

This guy is better than Shields and Davis.

  6. thelucknessmonster says: Mar 11, 2014 9:34 PM

Great deal for the Bucs now i definitely feel like the colts overpaid for Vontae Davis

  7. jermainewiggins says: Mar 11, 2014 9:35 PM

Wow. So much cheaper than I thought.

  8. rhinojr says: Mar 11, 2014 9:36 PM

i don’t get it… you don’t want Revis but this guy? So you telling me that Revis can’t play Tampa 2?

  9. Norseman says: Mar 11, 2014 9:37 PM

Makes the Shields deal look even worse, which is hard to do.

  10. coltzfan166 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:37 PM

Now THAT’S how much a good corner should be worth. Money well spent.

  11. jermainewiggins says: Mar 11, 2014 9:37 PM

I thought for sure hed be going to NE or DEN. This offseason is making me dizzy

  12. nehxas says: Mar 11, 2014 9:37 PM

Unreal man. Jets putting all FA plans on hold to chase an overpriced CB and being screwed over. Where have I heard this story before? (Nnamdi) and it’s me-vis of all people. The headache we finally got rid of. I mean, I may be jumping the gun severly here but wow Idzik has lost a lot of goodwill with this Jets fan. Sad day.

I mean look at that price! Can’t be beat. Tampa, things may be looking up after all. Should not be upset about losing Revis in the least.

  13. Stiller43 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:38 PM

4 for 26? Didnt the steelers just five 5 for 25 to a FS?!!!!

  14. steeltothebones says: Mar 11, 2014 9:38 PM

As usual my Steelers whiff AGAIN. What’s Rod Woodson’s phone number?

  15. jebdamone says: Mar 11, 2014 9:38 PM

wow…thats a heck of a deal. i understand that he may not have wanted to come here but wtf are the vikes doing?

  16. haraldsigurdson says: Mar 11, 2014 9:39 PM

    Tampa had a big day

  17. sclobernocker47 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:41 PM

Outstanding. I was wondering if Tampa as the “mystery team” Rappaport mentioned.

Verner is an FANTASTIC corner and for 10 mil less than Mevis’ contract annually.

  18. deezyny says: Mar 11, 2014 9:41 PM

As a Giant’s fan, this sucks! Good signing for the Buc’s though.

  19. icebowler says: Mar 11, 2014 9:42 PM

  22. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:46 PM

    seems cheap to me. wow.

John Elway epic FAIL. they needed a big time corner and this guy was not asking for much.

  23. bennyb82 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:47 PM

After the deals signed by other players in the secondary, how does his deal end up so small? At least he gets a tax break ?

  24. qdog112 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:47 PM

Lovie Smith has put the Bucs in the mix for great improvement on defense. Their defense will challenge the Panthers for the best in the South.

Meanwhile, the Panthers’ Gettleman looks like an amateur, with his biggest move being to insult the teams’s greatest player of all time. Playing the Bucs will not be fun in the future.

  25. cybersqueak says: Mar 11, 2014 9:48 PM

Bucs just made the steal of FA. We’ll miss him in Nashville.

  26. andrewluck12 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:49 PM

    wait what?

  27. matt24bucs says: Mar 11, 2014 9:52 PM

Must be a lot of Love for Lovie in Tampa! Best recruiter this side of Saban/Alabama!

  28. ramrod05 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:53 PM

I was thinking that they may try to splash with Jarius Byrd (because his father is the DB Coach for the Bucs) and probably try to trade Goldson because he and Barron are pretty much the same.

With Johnson, Verner and possible Tillman, Melton, Collins, McCown, Thurmond all making trips to Tampa, Lovie’s not playing around!!

  29. sportsnut101 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:58 PM

they got him for cheap wow

  30. russellwilsonismymvp says: Mar 11, 2014 9:59 PM

    Bucs win day one.

  31. titansbro says: Mar 11, 2014 10:00 PM

Thought he’d get way more, now I’m a little pissed the Titans didn’t resign him. I was ok with him leaving when I thought he was getting $10M+ per year.

  32. 4allintensivepurposes says: Mar 11, 2014 10:02 PM

They’ll be trying to trade him this time next year.

  33. bigblu73 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:04 PM

Shields/Davis 39-40 Mill, Verner 26 Mill? His agent should be under investigation, or at the least sued for gross negligence!!!LMAO

  34. allidoiswin55 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:17 PM

It seems like every year the bucs makes these big signings in the secondary and they still suck or give up a ton of points . Truth is this team needs offensive linemen and they should be pretty damn good . I for some odd reason always think they will be good the next season . And I am a Seahawks fan. It’s strange that they seem to squander every opportunity during the season .

Many teams lack talent and they lose because of it. TB doesn’t lack talent they just lack winners for some strange reason . I want to see them prove me right for once and win a good amount of games ! Shesh

  35. pftking says: Mar 11, 2014 10:23 PM

Wow that’s cheap. I know a lot of Viking fans are upset about this but Verner’s a better fit in Tampa’s Cover 2 scheme then the Vikings newer more physical defense. This a good signing by Tampa!

  36. tangysizzl says: Mar 11, 2014 10:24 PM

4 years 26 Million, that has to be a typo. If true his agent should be fired immediately or Ted Thompson should be.

  37. jolink653 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:25 PM

This is great for the Patriots. Keeps Verner away from the Jets and at the same time sets the market for Talib at a price way below what he was expecting. Nice signing for the Bucs too

  38. greg2geez says: Mar 11, 2014 10:43 PM

That’s it Mark Davis has to fire Reggie McKenzie right now. The Raiders are still a circus and the clowns are running it. Shameful to put Raiders fans thru two years of “deconstruction” go into this year with more $$ than like 10 teams combined and whiff on day one of free agency. Tampa Bay has completely outclassed the Raiders again it’s totally unacceptable. I can only imagine the disaster this years draft will be.

  39. tennesseetitan78 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:46 PM

Yeah I was a lil surprised with the contract he got considering Grimes, Shields, and Davis all got much more. Great signing by the Bucs. ATV (Verner) is a really smart good character player, plus he’s only 25. Doesn’t really have a big mouth or talks much just goes out and plays. He’s a zone guy, and doesn’t play man-to-man well. In which I think that’s what Lovie was looking for a DB that plays good zone. With the Titans bringing over Ray Horden as our D-coordinator I believe he likes to play his DB’s more man-to-man. Plus the titans have a couple of up-n-coming DB’s, so I believe with all of that.. That’s why I believe they let him walk in FA. But he will be missed in Nashville, and all of us titans fans wish him the best of luck. Again good signing with a good price for the Bucs!!

Tampa may be on the way back to prominence! Alterraun Verner was made to be much maligned by the previous coaching staff in Tennessee. Made him play safety in training camp and tried to replace him with a mediocre player like Tommie Campbell. Alterraun will flourish in the Tampa 2 scheme! He has a skillset close to Ronde Barber or Brian Kelly and they played well for years.

  41. texansfalcons says: Mar 11, 2014 10:48 PM

It seems like the Bucs have quite the secondary.

  42. Frazier28/7 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:01 PM

ahh nutz. good pick up coach.
Justin Gilbert to the Vikings might make more sense now.

looks like they got jared allen and antoine winfield 2.0 down there, u’ll need that in the tampa2

  43. pantherfan40 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:06 PM

damn as a panther fan this is a bad day for us , we loose mike mitchell , bucs went crazy in the free agency on defence , saints got byrd and we did abs nothing

  44. titaniksigh says: Mar 12, 2014 5:35 AM

What a punk. Said he’d take less money to go to a contender. At least he got the “less money” part right.

  45. tpa43 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:08 AM

He is coming off his best career year with 5 picks, and had 11 interceptions in his four year career. A 26 million deal (14 guaranteed) isn’t cheap for those numbers. It is just that Revis was making stupid money.

  46. h8glazersgobucs says: Mar 12, 2014 8:10 AM

    “texansfalcons says: Mar 11, 2014 10:48 PM
It seems like the Bucs have quite the secondary.”

–Said every Bucs fan every season after they gut and rebuild.

  47. isaachenderson2014jisaac5611 says: Mar 18, 2014 5:35 PM

Wow of any of all the big name corners, Verner is the biggest steal. He’s better than Davis & Shields. He’s also less of a chance than an injury prone Talib & I’m not sure yet if revis is 100% back to the level he was at before the injury to command 12 million a year. If you think about it Verner may have been the best most reliable option at CB of all the free agents for about half the price as all the other absurd deals.
