Cardinals land their left tackle in Jared Veldheer

Jared Veldheer AP

If you wanted a free agent left tackle you had to act fast Tuesday.

And the Cardinals weren’t going to be left out of the mix.

Per multiple reports, the Cardinals landed Raiders free agent Jared Veldheer with a five-year, $35 million deal.

Veldheer is coming off a triceps injury, but gives the Cards the kind of pass-protector they need covering Carson Palmer, especially in a division full of premier pass-rushers.

I knew he was too smart to go back to Oakland.

If he returns to his 2012 form, this could be the best LT signing for the money in the 2014 FA class.

Hurts me to say this but the Raiders BLEW it. Better than Saffold and cost less. What the hell Reggie?

    Just win, baby.

Very similar to what the Raiders just gave Saffold. Not sure why they wouldn’t want to keep their guy, must seem higher on Saffold than hulk. Guess time will tell.

Good fit if he’s healthy. Just what Cards need, too.

Congrats Arizona, minus the arm injury, the guy is a steal.

Well they picked the wrong guy to do that. Now if they wanted a penalty machine, then that’s what they got, enjoy!

Good luck with Robert Quinn twice a year.

But the Raiders are paying the grossly inferior Saffold $42.5M?

Love this signing for the Cardinals… especially since it’s about 2 Million a season less than Brandon Albert, and I like Veldheer better…

This was a solid, solid, solid signing by the Cardinals… LT’s are gold.

Great signing by the Cardinals. They’ll overtake the 49ers easily next season.

The Cardinals are officially a scary team now. Is fascinating to watch free agency and see how the NFC West is evolving.

    Very happy Cardinals fan here.

And smart enough not to go to the chargers who never won a Super Bowl

This is just so stupid…now Reggie has to blow the first pick on a LT when all he had to do was throw JV a homegrown bone.

Now instead of going defensive with Mack or trading back to get Donald, he needs to address the left tackle spot that was already in house…just don’t get it.

Face it nobody wants to play for R Mckenzie .He has no idea how to be a GM or acquire talent (drafting or free agency).

    Blunder after Blunder

    VELDHEER > SAFFOLD

RAIDERS should have signed veldheer during last year.

Raiders had more leverage then, and in good faith could have got a discount offering long term contract for injured home grown player.

  19. nativeraider says: Mar 11, 2014 8:12 PM

Forget Houston, Veldeer was the one that needed to be signed. I don’t know why they wouldn’t keep there own player. Everyone saying hes injury prone is wrong, being hurt doesn’t make you injury prone.

    Good luck Jared.

Happy as a Card fan. Welcome to the Valley of the Sun, Jared!!!

been a raider fan a long time—how reggie could let this guy go and pay more for a guard is hard to believe unless reggie just doesn’t want Al’s guys around……I thought AL was losin git but Reggie is actually making even his senile years look good……..very depressing

From a perennial loser to a contender. Pretty simple decision.

Steve Keim has only been on the job a short time but he’s getting stuff done like he’s been doing it for 20 years! Genius!

  24. smedleybumchuckle says: Mar 12, 2014 6:39 AM

He just wanted out of Oakland. Rumors are that the Raiders offered him around $55 million over 6 years last week and his agent said they wanted to test the market. You can’t force a guy to sign. Have fun in Arizona…Palmer is due to quit on the team soon then where will the Cards be.

    —————————————–

The guy probably wasn’t even BORN yet when the Raiders won their last Super Bowl! I know I sure as Hell wasn’t!

The Raiders spouting off about their 3 rings is like France laughing at the rest of Europe, because Napoleon once kicked all their butts.

    AFC West: Team Mindsets;

#1 Broncos, living in the present. Signing fly-by-nighters to win NOW.

#2 Chiefs, living in the future. Had a great year last year, but their best times are on the horizon.

#3 Chargers, living one foot in the present and one foot in the future. Pulled out a playoff win last year. Replacing and upgrading aging talent while still getting great production out of the veterans.

#4 Raiders, both feet planted FIRMLY in the PAST. Haven’t had a winning season in 11 years. Have finished 3rd or 4th in the division EVERY SINGLE YEAR for over a decade, including NEVER finishing above the Chargers in the rankings in that time (suck it!). Now they are giving away their best players for free, like charity, when in fact, THEY are the ones in need of handouts.

Who is your QB this year? I can never remember who your starting QB is from year-to-year. Always seems like the same guy but with different names. I can’t think of any real talent on your team at ANY position, for that matter…
