Colts keep Vontae Davis on four-year, $39 million contract

Vontae Davis will stay in Indianapolis.

Davis, a free agent cornerback who was expected to be sought after by several teams, has decided to stick with the Colts. It was Colts owner Jim Irsay who announced the deal on Twitter.

“Glad to welcome back Vontae Davis to the team!” Irsay wrote, in a rare tweet from Irsay with no spelling or grammatical errors.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, it’s a four-year, $39 million contract with $20 million guaranteed. That’s comparable to the contract Sam Shields got from the Packers, and it raises the question: If Davis and Shields are worth $10 million a year, what kind of money will Darrelle Revis make if he hits the open market tomorrow?

The cornerback market has gotten absurd. These prices justify the contract Revis has.

As a Dolphins fan , I can tell you that’s a hell of a lot better than having him sign with the Jets. Under Rex Ryan , he would likely have become a top three corner in short order , instead of the unfulfilled-potential-and-subject-to-brain-freezes-at-critical-moments-late-in-games guy he is now.

Good for Davis…Miami traded him and now look who got the big contract.

Vontae should send Ted Thompson as gift basket.

Corners are getting top dollar this year.

I guess he played well last year??? I didn’t watch any Colts games.

    now play consistant this year.

The difference is Davis was guaranteed $20M and Shields only $12M.

The totals don’t mean anything because they are unlikely to actually be paid.

Revis is worth about $40M guaranteed and who ever pays it will make a mistake.

Probably about $15,999,999, which isn’t enough for the Bucs to snag a draft pick out of the deal.

Shields gets 27.5 mil. the first two years. It’s essentially guaranteed.

    Grandma is pumped

10mil a year for average corners. Both Indy and the pack over paid

I still love Vontae, but that’s some MAD money and he isn’t worth it. Irsay should have let him walk with that price tag. The Colts already have too many holes to fill on defense to blow their wad of cash on a good-not-great CB like Davis.

So the only reason why the Dolphins gave Grimes, a much better CB than Grandma’s kiddo Davis, only 32 million for 4 years while Davis got 39 mil for the same number of years is because of Davis’s youth? Good ol’ Grigson…pays more for a much more immature player which I am glad the Dolphins had no interest in. They need leaders, not poseurs!

The kid is as dumb as a box of rocks, but glad he got paid. Free agency is like running up the bid at a storage auction.

    Fins up!

Has it occurred to anyone that perhaps people with actual football knowledge in the NFL no longer think Revis is as good as Revis thinks he is?

  18. bennyb82 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:33 PM

Revis’ must be salivating at these numbers and probably is pricing himself so far out of range that he might not have a team for awhile…

“Irsay wrote, in a rare tweet from Irsay with no spelling or grammatical errors” that’s the funniest line I’ve ever read in my life

The contract also includes an open tab at all bars in Indy

  24. ramstothesuperbowl says: Mar 11, 2014 6:39 PM

This is a classic example of idiots with too much money! I got 2 words for this signing, Tavon Austin! Vontae comes from the Latin root word, BURNT!
