Cowboys cut DeMarcus Ware

When Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mused about cutting defensive end DeMarcus Ware, many believed he was huffing and puffing.

On Tuesday, Jones blew Ware’s house in.

Per multiple reports, which PFT has confirmed, the Cowboys have released Ware.  He was due to count for $16 million under the salary cap, and he was due to earn $12.75 million in 2014.

It’s currently believed the Cowboys didn’t designate Ware as a post-June 1 release.  Which means that they’ll take the full cap hit in 2014 for cutting him, but they’ll clear $7.4325 million in cap space immediately.  Under the June 1 designation, he would have counted on the books at the full $16 million until June 2, at which time $12.75 million would have been created.

Ware now becomes a free agent, able to sign with any team at any time.

Not a Cowboy’s fan by any means, but D-Ware was a beast when healthy.

Hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

    Go Eagles

  3. cavemanmoneycom says: Mar 11, 2014 4:22 PM

This was the right move by the Cowboys, but Ware is going to have at least 3-5 more seasons as a starter in the NFL. He may not be the same Ware we all remember, but he’s still a 10-sack per year kind of lineman if he’s able to stay healthy.

If anyone wasn’t convinced before that the NFL under Roger Goodell has become business first, football second, welcome to the NFL 2014.

At the right price, I would like him to come to Philly. He’s better as a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE.

  7. swashbucklin says: Mar 11, 2014 4:23 PM

He should star in a reality show called ‘Demarcus Where?’

Also come to Baltimore! We’ll show you what winning’s like!

Welcome to Seattle, Mr. Ware! You may only make a couple mill but a guaranteed SB ring is a pretty nice fringe benefit.

Of course, Dallas released him. They had to. Cowboys didn’t have enough cap space to sign their draft picks.

This is going to happen every year until the Romo contract has run its course. That and Jerry hires someone who can do basic arithmetic aka a cap specialist.

Must be tough for Jerra! The Redskins get better by the minute and Dallas just hemorrhages their heros. Can Romo even stand up to cash his $20,000,000 a year checks?

  21. fissels says: Mar 11, 2014 4:25 PM

Tough decision, but the right one. They now have some money to spend on free agents who may fill some holes.

  26. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 11, 2014 4:26 PM

It does buy Dallas some time to still try and retain him at a lower price, so it will be interesting to see what offers he gets and if the Cowboys can compete with that.

  27. elliottcovert says: Mar 11, 2014 4:27 PM

I have a feeling that they’re going to regret this one.

  28. daysend564 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:27 PM

    Selfish, selfish man (Demarcus)

There was no way he was worth $12.75M next season. He’s going to find FA not as kind as he’d have expected, being on the wrong side of 32 and coming off two injury riddled seasons.

  29. hawksfan99 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:27 PM

He was a beast when he was younger… Not anymore :/

  30. tavisteelersfan says: Mar 11, 2014 4:27 PM

You know what. I am not a Cowboys Fan, LOL. I find the organization whacked. But, I like Ware.
And, I think Dallas did the right thing. I don’t know how you deal with a Pass Rusher with an iffy neck, as a $16 million guy.

Someone else take a shot with a better contract structure, I say go for it, he is a beast.

But, for Dallas, I think they had no choice but walk away.

First move this year I think made sense at the Big D.

  31. Youknowimright says: Mar 11, 2014 4:28 PM

Worst def in the league with him last year plus lots of injuries building up. Good just not great anymore. It was the right move. Time to move on.

  44. bowwserr says: Mar 11, 2014 4:37 PM

I’m not right in the head at the moment, and my heart hurts a little.

But this is extreme bias, as his is the only football jersey I own. I will miss Babe callin his name out for sack after sack on the radio. So is the business, but I suppose if we didn’t miss them when they left we wouldn’t be football fans… Best of luck….sad day.

  45. norseyapper says: Mar 11, 2014 4:39 PM

Had to be done. Ware should get a good contract, but one loaded with incentives. There hasn’t been anyone better at his position for several years, when he is healthy. But that health thing is an important caveat.

  46. cowboy4life29 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:40 PM

  54. cwon14 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:45 PM

Just more predictable management failure. The extension should never have been made since the Cowboys are a rebuilding team but always pretend otherwise.

He should have been traded for picks in his final year of the last contract. Now they get zero.

    Romo is another cap disaster.

They should shop Dez Bryant and Sean Lee.

  55. jucam1 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:47 PM

I beg the universe to please keep Jerrah and his little boy Stevie as the GMs of the Cowboys for years and years. I would donate money to keep Jerrah alive as a matter of fact!… The Cowboys have become such a meaningless joke of a franchise under the Jones family that I would never want this to end. DWare is not a great player anymore, but the fact that they had to cut him because Jerry is so bad at managing the cap makes me laugh and i’m sure brings a smile to Giants and Eagles fans who are the only two smart teams in the division. Sorry Cowboy fans but even if you were good enough to compete in the NFC, your owner is such an attention hog and unqualified moron, that you will never see another SB until him and Stevie are gone. Look on the bright side, you have the most overrated QB on the planet on your team. For a cap crippling amount of years, so you can always be comfy knowing you’ll be 8-8 or less and not have to watch them year after year. You already know whats coming. I never thought I would end up loving Jerrah this much. Keep up the good work buddy, we love what you’re doing!!!

  56. cwon14 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:49 PM

I’m a Cowboy fan and Ware was a good player and great against losing teams on Thanksgiving. When it really mattered he crapped out like so many of the other “stars” on the team.

Teams ran on him all the time even when he was prime, he was a sack specialist and not a very effective team leader.

  60. Steeley McBeam says: Mar 11, 2014 4:56 PM

Why wouldnt they designate him a 6/1 cut when any of that money not spent this year is rolled over anyway? There is no reason not to be fronted that cap space in June.

  61. dcbuff says: Mar 11, 2014 4:58 PM

Spencer made wayy more clutch sacks. D.ware was good but not clutch and disappeared late in close games. Not too sad to see him go, but good guy nonetheless

  62. chargrz says: Mar 11, 2014 5:04 PM

Now Ware will see what his true $ value is.It is not going to be anywhere near what he or his agent thought.

  66. jrcowboy49 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:20 PM

    D. Ware’s extreme high cap number reflects the vast ignorance of a GM (Jerrah) who can’t judge talent, overpays aging players, and has no idea about managing the salaries to fit the cap. Restructuring a player’s salary is “kicking the can down the road instead of fixing the problem.” That can has now come home to roost and it is biting Jerrah in the ass. The Cowboys are now in a rebuilding mode! Jerrah has destroyed the viability of the team as it cannot be sustained by arrogance, ego, and stupidity!

  67. brimab says: Mar 11, 2014 5:21 PM

Yep, definitely some of Jerry’s “best work”.

  68. quips007quips007 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:51 PM

  71. Shinnbone says: Mar 11, 2014 6:20 PM

DeMarcus I’m gonna make this short and sweet, if you want to play for a winner and get your Super Bowl Ring….then bring your talents up to Titletown U.S.A. and join the Green Bay Packers. Matthews on one side Ware on the other and opposing QB’s changing their Football pants after every series. If you don’t want the Championship sign with any of the other 31 teams. It’s up to you this is a business decision were not gonna wait to long so get on board or go back to mediocrity it’s up to you!
