Donald Brown bolts the Colts

The Trent Richardson trade was a success.  If the objective was to light a fire under 2009 first-round tailback Donald Brown.

As Richardson struggled for the Colts, Brown thrived.  And with the Colts now forced to justify giving up a first-round pick for Richardson, Brown has exited.

Brown has joined the Chargers, as initially reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.  A source with knowledge of the deal tells PFT that Brown’s agreed to the three-year contract, with a base value of $10.5 million.  Of that amount, $4 million in guaranteed.

It’s roughly the same deal that former Vikings running back Toby Gerhart signed with the Jaguars.  And it proves that the market for veteran running backs continues to reside in the same range as the top of the market for kickers.

Chargers G.M. Tom Telesco worked for the Colts when Brown was drafted.  He joins a depth chart that includes Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead.

Ryan Mathews is a bust, based on his inability to stay healthy

I’m a better in pass blocking than this guy

see ya. guy was an utter failure for most of his colts career. g

Nice signing! Great compliment from a skill-set perspective and we get a guy who can take over the carries in case of an injury to either Woodhead or Mathews.

Colts may already be in the market for a new running back just about 6 months after the Richardson trade. Crazy how both people that executed that trade in Cleveland got fired.

He bolts the Colts…for the Bolts.

Not worried. I’ll admit Brown had a good year, but he had a lot of bad ones in Indy too. I think Richardson will play a lot better this year after a full offseason to learn the offense. Now I just wish Ahmad Bradshaw would get healthy and the Colts re-sign him.

    Dammit, Donald!

The Colts could always trade for Gerhart or McFadden to replace Brown. Or they could overpay Ben Tate and save a pick. Either way I’m sure they’ll be happy with the deal.

Deep running back group in San Diego, all very different but talented runners.

Vikings are the class of this free agency.

Great 3 headed hydra TT. If 1 gets injured 2 can shine. Love watching you work. Excited to get a guy in his prime in the blue and gold.

The Chargers seem to be obsessed with taking on the Colts damaged goods. Sanders, Freeny, now Brown……crossing my fingers yet again.

Real Colt Fans love Donald Brown and should be pissed off that he’s gone. 26 year old free free agents, that are cheap, AND are former 1st round draft picks = sounds good to me!

Matthews, Brown and Woodhead sounds very nice.

I wish donald brown went to the Browns and not the chargers…

    Good signing, Bolts.

Don’t like this move. Enters a crowded backfield. Could’ve gone elsewhere for more playing time

Is it really that good of a signing by the Chargers? I like Brown but most backs need carries to shine. Matthews really improved last year and I know it’sa big if but if he stays healthy won’t they continue with the Mathews/Woodhead combination they have now?

Seems to me like Brown just relegated himself from a starter to a back up. Sure he’s a back up who’s going to get opportunities.

Heck maybe he’s smart and thinks 3.5 million a year and only the 5-10 plays most weeks in which to get injured is a pretty good deal.

This guy has something left to prove. Fantasy folks take notice.

Ryan Mathews is a poster-child for potential versus reality. He has the ability to be a perennial 1,000 yard back but since he gets injured walking down the steps, his career has been marred by injuries.

Donald Brown will form a good one-two with Danny Woodhead.

    Goodbye Brown, hello Sproles!

  22. chargersdiehard says: Mar 12, 2014 8:34 AM

What are we gonna do with 3 good running backs? Run the wing T?

  23. marcribaudo says: Mar 12, 2014 8:36 AM

I think the colts used their head and kept another often injured but special player in Ahmad Bradshaw.

  24. tahnoonzee says: Mar 12, 2014 8:59 AM

    solid, versatile depth at RB.

  25. cowstache says: Mar 12, 2014 9:44 AM

So much for any Fantasy football value from any of SD RB’s. Lol looks like New England

  26. gromit45 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:22 AM

Went from Ronnie Brown to Donald Brown with more $$$ spent? Was Charlie Brown not available? Lame move, Bolts.

  27. bartmuley says: Mar 12, 2014 12:18 PM

People forget the Colts still have Ballard too. Brown had a decent year last year but is a very average back. He’s a good backup.

Replacing his production at RB shouldn’t be hard for the Colts.

  28. tonybot3 says: Mar 12, 2014 12:44 PM

Well… This leaves more touches for Trent…. If he can get 50 touches a game, he’ll have no problem averaging 100 yards.

  29. chargersdiehard says: Mar 12, 2014 12:49 PM

Really Bart cause your first round pick traded away for Trent Richardson hasn’t exactly worked out.

    Veteran “Mediocre” running backs.
