Jairus Byrd heading to visit with the Saints

The safety market is moving quickly, but one of the big names is making a trip that definitely was not expected.

According to multiple reports, Bills safety Jairus Byrd is on his way to New Orleans for a visit with the Saints.

The Saints are not overwhelmed with salary cap room, but they do have a glaring need for a playmaker in the back of their defense to put next to Kenny Vaccaro.

Byrd lost suitors when the Browns and Broncos went other directions, and he’s said throughout he was giving the Bills a chance after they chose to not franchise-tag him for a second straight year.

How they plan on paying him? In beads? Yeah Right. He will be a Washington Redskin by the end of the day. We win Superbowls and have the cash to spend. #ByrdisaRedskininafewhrs

This guy is the type of playmaker we’ve needed since the scumbag known as darren sharper left. This defense was great, but we were one of the bottom 5 in turnovers. This guy can help fix that.

The Browns would definitely do well to sign him as well as Hitner.

I’d be less surprised if we traded Graham than if we signed Byrd. Not going to happen.

Come home to STL Jairus Byrd!

  6. floratiotime says: Mar 11, 2014 6:03 PM

Brees isn’t going to give him any of his money. So forget it Saints.

  7. jimb031 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:04 PM

hopefully he enjoys his visit and wants to stay, for less money of course

    Byrd wont sign in N.O.
It’s a Schefter report………take it with a grain of salt

  9. uwsptke says: Mar 11, 2014 6:07 PM

How can they afford to pay him?

  10. lucasblack12 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:08 PM

Why would he come in if there wasn’t a chance he could be signed? Just because they don’t have space now, doesn’t mean they can’t make space, saints can’t let this guy leave town though.

  11. ningenito78 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:11 PM

They obviously wouldn’t bring him to town and he wouldn’t go for a visit if they couldn’t pay him. And since when do the Redskins ‘win Super Bowls’? I must have slept through that season.

  12. kingokra says: Mar 11, 2014 6:12 PM

Oh, God, PLEASE, PLEASE make this happen!

  13. ariani1985 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:13 PM

    Sheftner or Gantt, same thing.

  14. jbhackney says: Mar 11, 2014 6:15 PM

…from the wallet of Drew Brees? Come on, Michael Jordan did it!

Perhaps NyQuil doesn’t pay quite like Gatorade/Nike/Hanes/Wheaties/McDonalds/Coca-Cola/Chevrolet/….Warner Bros?

  15. guitarfreak21 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:18 PM

They can’t afford Byrd, so they will pay him with off-book bounties instead 😀

  16. thrillheaux says: Mar 11, 2014 6:25 PM

All of the responses to this story are correct: the Saints cannot afford Byrd. They called him up at the height of free agency, told him “We can’t afford you, but how about you waste your time and our time and come hang out with us on Bourbon for a while.”

  17. vaphinfan says: Mar 11, 2014 6:26 PM

Imagine how good this guy would be with the patriots. Knowing what the play is before the offense runs it! It would be lethal!!

  18. ningenito78 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:27 PM

And if you haven’t noticed the crappiest teams always have the most cap space.

  19. EJ says: Mar 11, 2014 6:29 PM

If New Orleans doesn’t sign Byrd, I hope another team does because I no longer want him to play for Buffalo. I hope after the Bills front office sees that Byrd has no takers, they retract their offer. You don’t want to be here, we don’t want you. #PlantarFasciitisNeverGoesAway

  20. ningenito78 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:32 PM

Good teams = alot of good players = no cap space

Bad teams = hardly any good players = lots of cap space

There’s your special ed football lesson for the day fanboys.

  21. axespray says: Mar 11, 2014 6:34 PM

Wow… if the friggin’ saints can afford Byrd and we can’t with our 20+ mil in cap space… ugh!

  22. kingbrees9 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:37 PM

This would be as great addition to our secondary and don’t worry guys as long as he doesn’t ask for a monster deal we can make room to sign him but it will hurt out pockets

  23. kane337 says: Mar 11, 2014 7:28 PM

Are the Saints gonna cut Brees to sign this guy?

  24. Billsweregreatonce says: Mar 11, 2014 7:35 PM

I have a strange feeling that Byrd could end up back in Western New York if teams aren’t willing to Pony Up the dough the Bills offered. I have no issues either way, play like you should play, play here, just don’t act like you’re bigger than the Game. If he goes to The Fish, Jets, or Patriots, he will be DEAD to Me!!!! LETS GO BUFFALO!!!!

  25. docboss says: Mar 11, 2014 7:48 PM

Rams would love this guy, but not for 8+ million/year.

  26. catquick says: Mar 11, 2014 8:13 PM

Prediction: He ends up back with Buffalo. If he messes up or ends up on IR, he’s a FA again next year as the Bills will let him go.

  27. cags777 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:21 PM

I didn’t think the Saints had enough cap space. Did something change?

  28. rpkllc says: Mar 11, 2014 9:40 PM

    You guys are all experts.

  29. wbirdsall says: Mar 12, 2014 1:11 AM

Saints must be paying doubloons instead of beads. WTF we got the # 1 free agent. See ya later Malcolm
We loved you but you never could actually make plays.
