Land rush for DeMarcus Ware

Ware AP

The Broncos get the first in-person crack at former Cowboys defensive end/linebacker DeMarcus Ware.  But if the Broncos don’t sign him, there are plenty of other takers.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, more than a dozen teams contacted Ware after the Cowboys cut him on Tuesday.  Of those teams, six or seven made the playoffs in 2013.

In Denver, Ware would replace Shaun Phillips.  Who replaced Elvis Dumervil.  Who left after a fax machine faux pas last March prevented a revised contract from being signed and filed in time.

For now, Ware has committed only to visiting the Broncos.

It’s no coincidence that Jared Allen has expanded his horizons given Denver’s interest in Ware.  As one league insider correctly pegged the situation, Allen should have cut a wink-nod deal with the Broncos on Tuesday, before Ware was cut.

John Elway is the best closer in the business. Just count Ware as a bronco.

Jared might just want to rejoin the purple on the cheap. He will retire a Viking he already said, might as well finish chasing a ring with them

If you cut someone and 7-8 playoff teams want them, then you probably shouldn’t have cut them.

  4. Great Caesar's Ghost says: Mar 11, 2014 11:16 PM

Signing Ware should make up for 43-8.

  5. ridnaway says: Mar 11, 2014 11:16 PM

With Cleveland, Jacksonville and Miami falling all over themselves to see who can overspend the most I wouldn’t blink an eye if any of them signed Ware.

  6. packerbackernj says: Mar 11, 2014 11:17 PM

Elway is a genius and a closer because Peyton chose the offense with the best weapons to go to?

  7. rushbacker says: Mar 11, 2014 11:17 PM

Bah. Take your broken down body somewhere else for that last paycheck, please!

Jared Allen has a lot more left in the tank than DeMarcus Where? does.

Heck, the way it’s going he will probably come down and play for Lovie for a grouper sandwich!!

Here’s a crazy thought.. Maybe he doesn’t want to play for Denver? Or is it the landing spot of choose now that Manning’s got them SB’s oh wait

  12. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:23 PM

denver is focused on two big time corners right now. they will sign ware, allen, or phillips with whatever is left.

  13. jf203 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:24 PM

At this point in both Allen and D Wares career…they are not worth whatever money they will extort from teams..one dimensional players…just push them to the outside when they rush

    RETIRE ALREADY

  14. nowillrepeat says: Mar 11, 2014 11:24 PM

    Work your magic Rob Ryan.

  15. chrisk61 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:24 PM

ware and allen are both past their prime. neither one is worth anywhere near the money they want.

and more broadly, it is probably bad for the locker room to bring in a veteran like these guys, who will demand respect, but with their declining skills, won’t earn it.

    smart teams will stay away.

stop blaming capers … Denver the saints they go get the impact defensive players that at least will give them a shot at the bowl !!!

This is tt not having schnieder to draft and develop and TT you will have a top flight offense and a d that will guarantee you are one and done each year in the playoffs..

Come to the eagles and reak havoc on romo for a couple yrs lol

  20. hawksforever says: Mar 11, 2014 11:36 PM

Elway is such a genius that he will probably spend 10-12 million a year for Ware.

    LOL! LMFAO!!

  21. dfwhawkguy says: Mar 11, 2014 11:36 PM

More over-the-hill, past-their-prime players on this team? Did they learn nothing from their SB mauling?

  22. purplepanteez says: Mar 11, 2014 11:38 PM

DMark can keep his streak of Superbowl-less years alive in Minnesota.

Make history, DMark! Sign with the Vikings and let’s keep this thing going!

  23. birdbrainsnj says: Mar 11, 2014 11:44 PM

Yeah broncos, it’s the defenses fault you scored 8 points. Good luck next year when manning inevitable decline shows up and you’re stuck on a awful team with no future qb.

  24. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 11, 2014 11:47 PM

    birdbrainsnj

the bronco defense could not stop good offenses all year. they have a much harder schedule next year, and need the defense. the offense got shut down by seattle because the bronco receivers are not physical, and seattle is just, well, awesome.

Yet another comment with someone accusing Miami of throwing money into the wind when we’ve only made two big signings and one was a 1 year deal for less than 4 mil. Excuse me?

Albert was expensive, sure. But the next biggest contract Miami has dolled out was to resign our Pro Bowl CB Grimes. And go check his contract numbers compared to the mediocre Vontae Davis or Sam Shields. We made out like bandits.

where was this genius label before a hall of fame qb landed in his lap via the unemployment line?

    answer: nowhere

  27. jeff072376 says: Mar 12, 2014 12:06 AM

I think it’s funny how everyone says they want these players on their team but once they sign with Denver everyone retracts those statements and laughs at the Broncos for getting them. Don’t be mad birdbrainnj cause your Egirls needed a safety and signed the one with the most missed tackles in the league. I would be upset to if NY team had needs and their first FA signing was a punter.

  28. beerbudsnbevo says: Mar 12, 2014 12:06 AM

Buyer beware, you ain’t getting a Charles Hayley. Much props to Dware, bet your best days are gone

The window has closed in Dallas.

  33. tigerlilac says: Mar 12, 2014 12:41 AM

“John Elway is the best closer in the business. Just count Ware as a Bronco.”

The best closers don’t over pay . So far, John has two playoff wins (he’s not counting Tebow’s win, is he) and a Super bowl blowout to show for his work. That’s better than most but hardly the mark of the “best closer”. Let’s play the games before we anoint anyone as the next Super Bowl champion.

  34. gammynomnom says: Mar 12, 2014 12:49 AM

Best of Luck DeMarcus. I appreciate all you did for the Cowboys.

    Hey Denver,

    Talib, Ward…maybe Ware.

Your free agents next year include Welker, D. Thomas, J. Thomas, Knighton, Chris Harris……

Where’s your God Elway gonna get the money to pay any of them?

BTW…you still only scored 8 points. Talib, Ward, and Ware are not going to help change that number.

    #43-8

  37. mightyminer says: Mar 12, 2014 1:12 AM

Ware has been on the decline.

BUT, he’s also not had a lot of talent/help around him on Dline and, especially from the 2ndary.

Putting Ware in a situation where he doesn’t have to carry the load could make cutting him look like a totally foolish move

  38. johninthewest says: Mar 12, 2014 2:11 AM

    Ware to Denver, no question.

  39. jjfootball says: Mar 12, 2014 2:40 AM

PLAIN AND SIMPLE,ELWAY LUCKED OUT, WHEN MANNING DECIDED TO GO TO DENVER,AND WITHOUT MANNING,NOBODY WOULD EVEN MENTION ELWAY AS A GM!

  40. sumkat says: Mar 12, 2014 4:56 AM

What I don’t get is, they don’t seem to have a viable plan. Was Ware worth his cap hit? No, not at all. But you have to eat that when you have nothing to replace him with. It’s not like they cut him and Austin, and used that money to sign Byrd. Or another edge rusher out there or Ware’s stature.

Seems almost like saving money for the sake of saving money. But that’s not very Jerruh like

  41. Youknowimright says: Mar 12, 2014 6:42 AM

Buyer beWare. Pun intended. Getting more name and less talent. He is becoming more of a situational pass rusher. Not an everydown player anymore.

  42. craigkintexas says: Mar 12, 2014 7:32 AM

DeMarcus played on one of the worst defences in the league. Can’t wait to watch him with a team that gives him some help! He’s a Manster!

  43. mzfitz1215 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:56 AM

What I find interesting is I kept threatening to become a Broncos fan all last season if the cowboys didn’t get their sh*t together. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe it was fate?

I talk a lot of smack but I don’t know how to not be a cowboys fan having been one for more than half my life.

  44. mzfitz1215 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:59 AM

I think Miami will pick him up that’s where all cowboys go to die ;)

My husband didn’t find that comment amusing either (he’s a phins fan)

  45. somethingsmellsrotten says: Mar 12, 2014 10:36 AM

And just where are the Donkeys getting all this spending money? They were only 13 million under the cap…looks like they’re trying to cheat the cap to win a SuperBowl…again.*

  46. jsrdc says: Mar 12, 2014 12:00 PM

    @ buzzlightner,

“Come to the eagles and reak havoc on romo for a couple yrs lol”. By the way, that would be “wreak” havoc, swifty.

First of all, Ware has way too more class than to choose to sign with the Eagles. Please.

Secondly, even if he were to miraculously end up in the NFC East on any team other than the Cowboys, Tyron Smith would shut him down all day anyway.

The Eagles won’t get, nor do they deserve, a future HOF’er and arguably the best DE the Cowboys have ever had.
