The Raiders have tens of millions of dollars in salary cap space available, and within minutes of the start of free agency they had started spending.

Former Rams offensive lineman Rodger Saffold has reached an agreement with the Raiders. According to Adam Schefter ‏of ESPN, it’s a five-year, $42.5 million deal that includes $21 million guaranteed.

JV Must have been asking for a ton!!!

  2. str8cashomie17 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:20 PM

Not too familiar with the rams or this guy, but he better be a damn good LT for Reggie to want him over hulk.

  3. jdphx says: Mar 11, 2014 4:22 PM

Is Saffold really any better than Veldheer?
Doesn’t he project better inside at Guard?

  4. p4hbiz says: Mar 11, 2014 4:22 PM

    Not bad…

  5. spliff219 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:24 PM

wow. almost as bad as Dansby for 28 mil

  6. mpoles says: Mar 11, 2014 4:25 PM

So is Reggie paying Saffold more than Arizona are paying Veldheer? Ouch.

  7. calibear831 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:26 PM

I wonder what happened? This guy cost more than Jared Veldheer.

  8. drsummeroff says: Mar 11, 2014 4:26 PM

Lmao!! All that for this china plate? This guys as fragile as humpty dumpty falling off the wall! Guess the raiders had to get to the cap minimum somehow. This guy will be in the trainers room by week 2.

  9. balooga999 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:26 PM

These deals are beyond dumb. I seriously think teams and GMs have lost their marbles.

  10. getthegleam says: Mar 11, 2014 4:28 PM

We paid more for this guy than Valdeer? He is hurt all the time !!!

  11. 4grammarpolice says: Mar 11, 2014 4:28 PM

They’re paying him more than the Cardinals are paying Veldheer, and he’s not as good as Veldheer. #makesnosense

  12. meatcarroll says: Mar 11, 2014 4:33 PM

Saffold isn’t even good and anyone who’s ever watched a Rams game already knows that.

  13. cjas9298 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:34 PM

Veldheer got $35M, Saffold $42.5M. It makes sense. Veldheer is longer, stronger and superior to Saffold in every way. Way to go Reggie.

  14. radrntn says: Mar 11, 2014 4:39 PM

let me get this right…Reggie is paying this guy more than what the Dolphins paid Branden Albert, the Cards paid Velhdeer, and possibly even more than what Eugene Monroe might get….time well tell, but right now i am scratching my head

  15. 80sbroncofan says: Mar 11, 2014 4:39 PM

Way over paid for a guy that only played one full season in his career and that was his rookie year. He gets hurt almost every other play.

  16. shuttaman1990 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:41 PM

    Reggie needs to get fired.

  17. somethingsmellsrotten says: Mar 11, 2014 4:47 PM

Yep…just don’t get this one. As I said before, Reggie is already overpaying for marginal players and he’s paying this guy $7.5 million more than JV got from the Cardinals…and $21 million guaranteed? I need an explanation…

  18. dante170 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:48 PM

Everyone screaming this guy not as good as Veldheer. Well, How can anyone know. Veldheer played in 5 whole games last year. At least the Rams got 12 games out of Saffold.

  19. luccthaboss says: Mar 11, 2014 4:49 PM

He’s a great tackle in my opinion. He’s got the money now, so watch him work.

  21. El Pollo Loco says: Mar 11, 2014 4:50 PM

They plan to use him at guard..Really Oakland? And resigning the dorito chipped McFragile.SWING and a miss yet again Reggie

  22. cosmoman11 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:52 PM

$8 million per year = $4 million per game.

  23. raidermick3sb3rings says: Mar 11, 2014 4:54 PM

So tell me this, how many games did Veldheer miss this past year? Yeah, that’s right…you can’t count them on one hand…

  24. JSpicoli says: Mar 11, 2014 4:58 PM

Saffold is going to play Guard. We are not done at OLine. Watch.

  25. schmitty2 says: Mar 11, 2014 4:59 PM

As a Rams fan I dont understand it. He is “servicable” as a tackle but far better suited as a guard. And you think Veldheer was injury prone you haven’t seen nothing yet.Way too much money for this guy!

  26. slick50ks says: Mar 11, 2014 5:00 PM

The Rams signed Jake Long because Saffold was terrible on the left side. Then they moved him to guard because he was terrible at right tackle.

Now, in all things faider, Big Reg signs him to elite LT money!

There’s a reason you’re the worst franchise in the NFL, and will remain so for years to come.

  27. godfatherd says: Mar 11, 2014 5:07 PM

So they downgraded, and then paid more for Saffold than Veldheer got from Arizona. Sounds like an oakland move.

  28. ramstothesuperbowl says: Mar 11, 2014 5:11 PM

42.5 MILLION, THIS IS INSANE!!!!???????!!!! SAFFOLD HAS MISSED 42.5 GAMES. I’ve been a rams season ticket holder for almost 10 years. Don’t get me wrong I’m no Saffold hater, he is a great talent, versatile, can play just about every position on the line except center. When he is playing he is solid. BUT HE IS ALWAYS HURT!!!! I honestly think he has kitty cat between his legs. He bout as soft as those pillows in a 5 star hotel! 21 mil guaranteed to a player with knees made of ginger bread will yet put the Raiders in salary cap hell for the years to come. This dude has Greg Oden knees. If Rams woulda offered him 42.5 mil it woulda been $500k guaranteed with a $10,000 Panda Express gift card. What a foolish franchise, finally in a good spot cap wise and you go eff it up on Saffold. #AlDavisYetLives #Idiots

Why do i have to be a Raiders fan 😦

I think the league should seriously consider taking over this team until they find someone who they think can successfully run it

  30. nflfolly says: Mar 11, 2014 5:22 PM

    Someone Fire Mckenzie Please!!!!!!!!!

  31. radrntn says: Mar 11, 2014 5:39 PM

well i guess we are going with Matthews/Robinson at LT, Saffold LG, Wiz at OC, Barnes RG, and Watson at RT……not to shabby…much improved

  32. realfootballfan says: Mar 11, 2014 6:06 PM

You Raider fans still think Reggie McKenzie knows what he’s doing?

  33. eddytap says: Mar 11, 2014 6:25 PM

Oh my god. Shut up with the I can be a better gm crap. Obviously reg is a gm for a reason. It’s the first day my god. Lot more moves ahead. You don’t win championship thru free agency. You supplement your team. Basically this is a three year deal. If doesn’t produce, he’ll be gone. The guys who didn’t stay wanted to leave. Period. Reg can only do so much.

  34. raiderapologist says: Mar 11, 2014 6:50 PM

44 starts in four seasons? Yikes.

  35. vipod4ever says: Mar 11, 2014 8:25 PM

He’ll play guard, the Raiders now draft Robinson or Matthews at LT and look for Vick or Freeman at qb

  36. vegasgreek says: Mar 12, 2014 1:19 AM

Draft Jake Matthews and sign Josh Freeman . When the Raiders were great their offensive line was great. Freeman is a prototype Raider QB who can throw the bomb. Move T Pryor to WR.

  37. raiders4ever says: Mar 12, 2014 6:27 AM

Valdeer has been hurt lately he only played 4 games last season …and he still wasnt that healthy…i think bringing in Howard at right tackle also was a huge upgrade Saffold and Howard added on the OL as we lose Valdeer…so far so good

  38. raiders4ever says: Mar 12, 2014 6:32 AM

Cardinal fans be prepared for Valdeer to get hurt in OTAs or mini camp or anything b4 the season starts trust me if you think Saffold was bad wait til you see Valdeer as hes hurt hes still complaining about something
