Jaguars trade Blaine Gabbert to 49ers

If Blaine Gabbert is to jump-start his career, it will not be in Jacksonville.

PFT has confirmed that the Jaguars have dealt Gabbert to the 49ers.  Adam Schefter of ESPN, who first reported the news, says the compensation will be a sixth-round pick.

The Jaguars’ No. 1 pick in 2011, has Gabbert struggled with his play and with injuries in his NFL career. He was benched last season, his third in Jacksonville.

With the Jaguars re-signing Chad Henne and looking like a candidate to draft a passer, Gabbert’s future in Jacksonville seemed tenuous.

Now, he will get a fresh start in San Francisco with head coach Jim Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback. Gabbert, who has a manageable base salary of $2 million, figures to compete for a reserve role behind Colin Kaepernick, also a 2011 draft pick.

UPDATE 5:23 p.m. ET: The Jaguars have confirmed that Gabbert has been dealt.

  5. logicalvoicesays says: Mar 11, 2014 5:14 PM

He’s better than Kaepernoob. 49ers are FRAUDS who will never win a Superbowl again.

6th round pick for a backup, I dont mind it.

  7. redislander10 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:15 PM

How in the world does Gabbert have 6th round trade value???

  10. niners816 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:16 PM

As a niners fan im truly embarrassed by this. Worst qb I’ve seen since Todd Collins.

  11. bucrightoff says: Mar 11, 2014 5:16 PM

You just know Harbaugh is gonna make something of him. He’s a baby but a great QB coach.

  12. National Fanatic says: Mar 11, 2014 5:16 PM

…the 49ers have SO many draft picks (again) they can do things like this.
If Gabbert does well, then Kapernick may not get $20 million per, next season.

  13. Go-Hawks! says: Mar 11, 2014 5:16 PM

It is wrong to hope Kaep gets injured. But now it is much more tempting to hope for it. Not that the Seahawks need the help, but Kaepernick is much better than Gabbert.

  14. tjacks7 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:16 PM

    The 9ers got fleeced.

  16. scmems07 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:17 PM

hey, it’s a qb upgrade, and he will not ask for $18 mil a year.

    Is this REALLY true??

  18. dukeearl says: Mar 11, 2014 5:17 PM

    Smh. lol. I’ve got nothing.

  20. FlashPatterson says: Mar 11, 2014 5:18 PM

We’ll give you Ponder and a 6th for nothing!

  21. jdphx says: Mar 11, 2014 5:18 PM

What does “the great gabbert” have to say?

  22. thegonz13 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:18 PM

    The Jaguars fleeced the Niners!

  23. thepftpoet says: Mar 11, 2014 5:19 PM

A sixth round pick is 100x better than Gabbert.

  24. blacknole08 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:19 PM

The trade doesnt make sense. There were better back-up options available via FA. Kaep better not get hurt now lol

  25. mungman69 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:19 PM

Does this mean that he didn’t work out in Jacksonville?

  26. smcgaels1997 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:19 PM

Please it’s a 6th round pick who cares

  27. thealmightybigblue says: Mar 11, 2014 5:21 PM

Haha lol what?49ers and noodle arm Kap will never win. Another SB.we lol at u.

  28. Stiller43 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:21 PM

Why would anyone trade for gabbert?

  29. smcgaels1997 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:21 PM

Seahawks fans should talk..after trading and paying for Flynn

  30. bennyb82 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:21 PM

Amazing how only last year Gabbert was still considered the future…

  31. pickleman77 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:22 PM

Check it out Spielman – The Jags knew it was time to cut bait. Ditch Ponder!

  32. texansfalcons says: Mar 11, 2014 5:23 PM

    Good move for the Jags.

  33. andreboy1 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:24 PM

this is just so Jim can test his QB teaching skills. this is his test to get his PHD in quarterbacking.

  34. ravenswhat says: Mar 11, 2014 5:24 PM

Considering 6th round picks rarely make a roster this is an ok gamble. Considering how awful the jags coaching has been and how great Harbaugh is with qbs this may end up a bargain for the niners.

  35. jagsandliquor says: Mar 11, 2014 5:25 PM

    Just wow

  36. lukedunphysscienceproject says: Mar 11, 2014 5:25 PM

I love the way this section has just turned into biased fanboys taking pot shots at rivals whether it makes any logical sense or not.

There are actually people on here that hate the niners so much that they are saying Gabbert is better that Kaepernick.

And then there are the people so in the tank for the niners that they will defend anything they do. There are actually people on here saying it’s a great move and if he “does well”, they won’t have to pay Kaep.

Don’t facts, such as the fact that Blaine Gabbert can’t play football, matter to anyone anymore?

  37. vikingsvoice says: Mar 11, 2014 5:26 PM

Colt McCoy last year, Gabbert this year. I guess Harbaugh prefers reclamation projects to green rookies…

  38. flipola says: Mar 11, 2014 5:26 PM

    We’ll miss him.

    – Titans fans

  39. dtownsportslions says: Mar 11, 2014 5:26 PM

Kaep isn’t getting the 18 million, now that the legend Blaine Gabbert is in town to replace him

  40. shaggytoodle says: Mar 11, 2014 5:27 PM

That way when they coach leaves, and Kaep asks for too much. They got a plan to move on at QB.

  41. darkneptune73 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:27 PM

That now confirms Jacksonville drafting a QB. No other way around it.

  42. seang12334 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:28 PM

But Darrelle Revis cant be traded…

  43. sharks123 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:28 PM

Harbaugh brought Alex back to life. I wouldn’t laugh at any QB Harbaugh wants.

  44. gillespie138 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:29 PM

Let’s not forget what we got for a 6th round pick last year. (Anquan Boldin) also lots of people said the same thing about Alex before Jim got to town. Who knows maybe a fresh start will be good for Blaine. Jim is a hell of a QB coach, I would be suprised if he becomes a quality back up.

  45. thefox61 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:29 PM

Gabbert or McCoy? I’d rather have Tavaris Jackson and The Lombardi Trophy than either one of those busts… Oh wait, we do!

    Go “World Champion” Seahawks!

  46. smokim says: Mar 11, 2014 5:29 PM

OMG..the great “duck & chuck” gabbert..worst top 10 QB pick of alltime.

  48. lurch61 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:30 PM

If anyone remembers, the mock draft pundits all had the niners drafting gabbert back in the draft of 2011; instead they went for his teammate aldon smith. they could have spent a first round pick on this guy, we will see what happens

  49. coltzfan166 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:30 PM

Although it’s a long shot, if anyone can save his career, Jim Harbaugh is the guy that can do it.

  50. gojags436 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:31 PM

The Jags now have 11 picks in this coming draft. I truly feel bad for Gabbert over his time here. 3 HC’s & 3 OC’s in 3 years. And he was supposed to sit his 1st year & got thrown into the mix before he was ready at the last second when Garrard got hurt & released. The Jags’ old regime didn’t do this kid any favors, but he never complained, always took the blame & continued to work hard. It didn’t work out here for him but this is one Jags fan who respected his effort & attitude.

  51. kingokra says: Mar 11, 2014 5:31 PM

Wow. What just happened? This has to be a joke, right? – Jim Harbaugh

  52. dirtysouthniner says: Mar 11, 2014 5:35 PM

Dont worry im sure we’ll trade back in the draft and get another 6th round pick.. nobody can do well in jax(lately)..hopefully harbs can uh fix him

  53. sportsnut101 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:35 PM

Jags won this deal getting a 6th rd pick for him is like getting 1st rd pick in return for them lol

  54. jcjaguar says: Mar 11, 2014 5:37 PM

    Thank you!!!!

  55. brooklynniner19 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:40 PM

Gabbert is a better backup than Colt MCcoy and if Jim H. can put Alex Smith on the map he can definitely do the same for Gabbert who will be backup.

  56. schmitty2 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:44 PM

The battle between him and Mccoy to win the back-up job should be epic.

  57. tformation says: Mar 11, 2014 5:46 PM

Looks like Jimmy Harbaugh found himself a QB renovation project.

Good luck, Blaine. Time to see if it was Jacksonville that sucked or whether that was just you.

  58. mowerguyjags says: Mar 11, 2014 5:46 PM

Thank you, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Caldwell just robbed you! A 6th?
HaHaHaHa….we were going to flush him anyway.
    There is a Santa Claus.

  59. fumblenuts says: Mar 11, 2014 5:50 PM

Don’t forget Whiners his nickname in Jax was Blame Gabbert for his finger pointing……

  60. kaperchoke says: Mar 11, 2014 5:51 PM

Lit a fire under the CHOKE ARTIST LOL!!!

This will teach the Noob Choke and his mom to shut their mouth about 18 mil+ contract extension LOL!!!

  61. footballace says: Mar 11, 2014 5:52 PM

Blaine Garbage should fit well in the 49ers organization.

  62. jimmydixx12 says: Mar 11, 2014 5:55 PM

I see even a SB can’t cure Sea fans’ massive inferiority complex disorder.

  63. realfootballfan says: Mar 11, 2014 5:59 PM

If Harbaugh or Andy Reid can’t help you, there is no hope

  64. 49erfan44 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:00 PM

He’s only 24. Time will tell. Name anyone who would’ve done better on those Jags teams?

  65. seaeagle707 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:04 PM

Last year Belichick got Tebow for his “QB Hobby Project”. I guess Harbaugh got jealous, and went out and got his own, QB Hobby Project. Something to do between OTA’s and training camp.

  66. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 11, 2014 6:04 PM

Harbaugh recruited Gabbert to Stanford before Luck. Blaine was the higher rated recruit and beat out Luck for the starter role at the Army All America Bowl despite not having played his senior season due to a shoulder injury. He walked in cold not having thrown a football in several months and beat Luck for the job. Kaepernick should be no problem.

  67. i10east says: Mar 11, 2014 6:13 PM

Well atleast Blaine gets to play two preseason games in Levi’s Stadium, and not that archaic dump Candlestick Park.

  68. thebirdofprey2 says: Mar 11, 2014 6:14 PM

I honestly laughed so hard because I thought it was a joke. At least he’ll have a better passer rating than Dolphin’s hat.

  69. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Mar 11, 2014 6:32 PM

All silly trash talk and doom aside, the Niners liked Gabbert in 2011. Harbaugh worked him out and liked what he saw. I trust Harbaugh’s QB evaluation skills over any current coach. Gabbert is bright, serviceable and you’re high on legal Colorado weed if you don’t think Gabbert is a major upgrade over Colt (cough) McCoy.

I really like this deal. Gabbert has way more upside than most think. Who the hell did he have to mentor and develop him in JAX? Exactly. Now he’ll have one of the best to teach him the ropes

  70. kaperchoke says: Mar 11, 2014 6:40 PM

Gabbert might actually learn to read defenses, unlike the CHOKE ARTIST LOL!!!

  71. pftking says: Mar 11, 2014 6:46 PM

Lol! The Niners got ripped-off! Little did they know, Jacksonville would’ve taken an open bag of chips and a half empty can of soda for Gabbert.

  72. BigVinnyInJax says: Mar 11, 2014 6:58 PM

The guy had three coaches in three years at Jax (four if you count the interim Mel Tucker after Del Ego was fired), so it’s tempting to give him the benefit of the doubt. But, man, he never did anything that even resembled a first round pick. We’ll take the 6th rounder and happily move on.

  73. jimmypx says: Mar 11, 2014 7:18 PM

As a Jags fan this news makes me so happy. The “Gabbert Experiment” is finally over and the Jags can start working on getting a QB that has talent. For Gabbert, he’s going to the best place possible for him and hopefully while he is holding a clipboard, Coach Harbaugh can teach him how to be an NFL QB.

  74. therooneyskilledwebster says: Mar 11, 2014 7:45 PM

    aka the notsogreatgabbert

  75. sisqsage says: Mar 11, 2014 9:27 PM

Obviously, Harbaugh’s fave TV show as a kid was the Six Million Dollar Man…We Can Rebuild him. Gabbert will look like a decent QB after a year or two with Harbaugh.

  76. kaperchoke says: Mar 12, 2014 10:09 AM

Don’t be surprise, when KraperChoke Artist fails again this season to even reach the NFCC, 9ers don’t want to pay KraperChoke or even franchise tag the choke and they pay Blaine Gabbert a cheaper deal and he takes over in 2015 and leads the 49ers to a SB win!!!

Blaine Gabbert is a Alex Smith with bigger arm and reads the defense better than the Choke Artist LOL!!!

  77. rukkus1 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:25 PM

    smcgaels1997 says:Mar 11, 2014 5:21 PM

Seahawks fans should talk..after trading and paying for Flynn

At least Flynn had some decent games filling in for Rodgers. Blain has never had a 6 to game, I think he’s only had a 6 int game
