Report: Jets very interested in Jones-Drew

With the signing of Toby Gerhart in Jacksonville, veteran tailback Maurice Jones-Drew likely won’t be back with the Jaguars.

He could find a new home in New York.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets are showing serious interest in Jones-Drew.

The Jets desperate need skill position players.  Their leading ball carriers in 2013 were Chris Ivory (833 yards) and Bilal Powell (697).  Jones-Drew presumably would become a viable candidate for the starting job.

Jones-Drew has the personality to enhance his football salary with off-field media opportunities in New York; he could lay the foundation to launch a media career by ending his career in the nation’s top media capital.

MJD is not interested in playing for the pathetic vikings

    that’d be a nice fit

Translation: Jets very interested in 3YPC and under

  4. thepftpoet says: Mar 11, 2014 10:32 PM

Nothing can help the pathetic Jets offense and Geno Terrible Smith at QB.

Meanwhile the Vikings have already obliterated free agency signing the best DT in the league for only 6 million a year.

    Every franchise envy’s us.

  5. enzo1030 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:33 PM

Pretty sure Manish has said the Jets have shown interest in every single big name free agent.

That guy is a terrible excuse for a journalist.

  6. jetsmmt says: Mar 11, 2014 10:35 PM

MJD and Chris Ivory together would be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Hope the Jets can get him.

  7. larry321 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:35 PM

Sounds like manish found himself a new source within the jets organization. Let’s see how long Idzik allows it to last. Or maybe Pettine is still feeding him?

MJD would be a nice fit in NY!

  9. jetslakersfan says: Mar 11, 2014 10:37 PM

That would be a nice pick up.

Jets still looking for that pass catching back with Goodson’s injury/lea gal issues. Obviously has a lot of wear and tear so should work well in a rotation of Ivory and Powell.

If Ivory had any hands at all this dude would be a force.

good luck toby we hardly knew ye

  12. billclintonspetkraken says: Mar 11, 2014 10:38 PM

Veteran leadership would help the relatively young backfield.

  13. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 11, 2014 10:43 PM

They need to do a better job of converting positive results if they aren’t going to generate any salvage in trade before key players exit the franchise. Sure would be nice to have the entire value of his career back. Oh well what’s 8 years worth anyhow, they did have that one year they broke .500 at 3 games over.

“The Jets desperate need skill position players. ”

No they need to learn how to run the ball. It was the players, it was the play, the scheme was awful.

  15. dino2997 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:44 PM

Why would the Jets want MJD? Better off drafting a RB than picking that has-been.

  16. thealmightybigblue says: Mar 11, 2014 10:45 PM

This is why the Gmen are the dominant NY franchise.#welaughatyouhisterically.

  17. ajgreenhof says: Mar 11, 2014 10:45 PM

He deserves to play for a winner.

  18. dbatrox21 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:46 PM

I’m sure they have interest…He’s breathing, isn’t he?

    Somebody STOP him!!!

He’s going to be in jail…..not football. The rest of those tapes will bury him.

Orivar….the Jets need to learn to run the ball? Did you see a game last year? Jets were #2 in the AFC in rushing…Wake up, dude

  25. micknangold says: Mar 11, 2014 11:33 PM

The Jets don’t need backs. Maybe a pass catcher out of the backfield, but it’s not a priority.

  26. jeremycrowhurst says: Mar 12, 2014 12:04 AM

MJD is a class act, and I wish him well where ever he ends up. Unfortunately, “where he ends up” is going to be IR.

  27. ariani1985 says: Mar 12, 2014 12:18 AM

    Seattle with no running game?

  28. swo says: Mar 12, 2014 12:45 AM

I hope the Jags keep him but either way, he’s a good dude. I hope last year’s numbers were because of our terrible O-line and ineffective passing attack.

I was hoping he would still be here in our glory years just like Walter Payton had his in Chicago.

  29. vincentbojackson says: Mar 12, 2014 1:21 AM

This makes a lot of sense. Jets are always looking for a shortcut where there is none. In this case, foolishly chasing an overpriced player past his prime.

  30. cursedvikings1998 says: Mar 12, 2014 1:46 AM

The Saints totally worked over the Jets in that trade for Chris Ivory. Brittle china doll, he is. Saints got a 4th rounder out of that, which they used on John Jenkins, who performed at a high level (for a rookie).

Now the Jets are already looking past Chris Ivory.

  31. 4thandlonger says: Mar 12, 2014 2:06 AM

Ok Ivory and Powell aren’t scaring too many teams but they can do ok. Why not spend the money on OL and WR to give your rookie a chance to stay upright and have some guys who will get open.

I’m pretty sure having good blockers up front and making the defense worried about having to cover some receivers will do more for the ground game than getting MJD.

  32. dickshotdogs says: Mar 12, 2014 2:08 AM

It was Ray Rice, not MJD, in the video.

  33. raze12004 says: Mar 12, 2014 2:17 AM

He goes from one bad team to another, doesn’t make sense.

  34. jmonty1102 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:18 AM

The Jets need a pass catching back, would rather see them make a run at Darren Sproles instead

  35. mbagrad13 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:28 AM

Jones Drew still has 2-3 good years left he’s healthy he will automatically help Geno improve because he’s a pass catcher

  36. jokeydee says: Mar 12, 2014 1:17 PM

Maybe this means Denard X is gonna get to really show off now that MJD is gone. Also I guess MJD fixed his legal troubles

  37. kingsfisher1 says: Mar 13, 2014 1:53 PM

Not a Jets fan or hater. Your Qb is the problem and you know this. This would be a good addition since Sproles is gone already. Good luck to you but your media is another enemy. Totally different monster in NY. You need a Qb to manage the offense. Fat Rex can put a D on the field.
