Report: Saints will trade Sproles

Sproles Getty Images

After it was reported elsewhere that the Saints would cut running back Darren Sproles, we added a caveat:  The Saints would first try to trade him.

And now they apparently will trade him.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Saints will trade Sproles, thanks to a high demand for his services.

Sproles joined the Saints in 2011, after six seasons with the Chargers.  He turns 31 in June, and the Saints apparently believe his best days are behind him.  Fortunately for New Orleans, other teams disagree.

Thus, of all the veterans destined to be cut whose teams are trying to trade them, Sproles is the one, and perhaps only, that actually will be traded.

Teams need to just wait and they will be on the market.
The teams that have them now are going to get stuck paying some $$$$ if they hold on to them too long.

I’m sure Rick Spielman will trade the Vikings 1st 2nd and 3rd round picks for him and probably throw in Patterson knowing how stupid the pathetic “GM” is. Dude needed to be fired like 3 years ago. Worst GM in NFL period

da raidahs for 2 first round picks

    31 year old RB….5th round pick…maybe.

  7. nomad57 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:04 PM

If you look at his numbers, he had a good year. If you watched the games, you know he lost a step.

Joique Bell and another fill-in that saves the Lions some cap space in exchange for Sproles would interest me. They could justify not gaining any space going from Sproles to Bell by seeing the youth upside and a couple extra years under contract if they find some value in whoever the extra fill-in player is. Maybe that player saves them a few bucks on what they were expecting to spend.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the saints draft dri arhcer in later rounds. Those pitches and screens would be even more dangerous with 4.26 speed running them.

Eagles maybe? Shady and sprolesy? Dynamic

  12. haraldsigurdson says: Mar 11, 2014 8:10 PM

This article is worthless without knowing who he is going to and for what picks.

  13. chaser44 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:11 PM

Sproles and a 4th for bryce brown and 7th.

  14. raiderrob21 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:12 PM

This has SF written all over it. They have extra draft picks, and a NEED for a speed back (FAILURE of high draft pick Lemichael James)
But will Saints trade to a fellow NFC contender?

  15. Shinnbone says: Mar 11, 2014 8:15 PM

Packers should kick the tires as a return guy but at the very most a sixth round pick.

  16. gocaps8 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:16 PM

Shakedown to get the Skins to cough up a late pick.

The Packers would have no interest with Franklin being drafted last year.

According to the comments in this thread Sproles will be traded to all 31 NFL teams.

This is a heck of football player. Any team that gets him will benefit.

  23. charlottenation says: Mar 11, 2014 8:41 PM

Wow, thanks from Panthers nation. Class player and scary foe. That Brees guy, yeah, he stinks too. Get rid of him and we’re batting 1000.

  24. ultimatesaintsfan says: Mar 11, 2014 8:41 PM

Mark my words this has Rams written all over it!

  25. ghost26 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:43 PM

This is like adding a Gio Bernard to an offense. I can see him fitting well with the Steelers, the Ravens, or maybe the Colts. I’d say the Dolphins but I don’t think we’d use him properly.

  26. clssylssy says: Mar 11, 2014 8:44 PM

    Titans

If clown music is your theme, green bay is your team!

  28. majahpayne8950 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:49 PM

Bears have extra 6th round pick and just got rid of bush and hester is gone too. Don’t count emery out of a crazy move and pull it off. Would be deadly combo with forte.

  29. doubleogator says: Mar 11, 2014 8:50 PM

Sprolsy will be missed, he’s one tough man, with that, he does rely on speed and quickness, and as others said above, he has lost a step…best of luck, was all class here in N.O.

  30. coachstram says: Mar 11, 2014 9:12 PM

Bears, Rams, Cardinals come to mind, but cant imagine the Saints would get “blockbuster” return.

But, I sure someone ( Raiders ) will over pay.

  31. etoharin78 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:48 PM

Not smart to announce he’s on the trade block. That makes it public knowledge and if a team is patient enough, he will get cut eventually and you don’t have to give up picks etc.

  32. purplefail says: Mar 11, 2014 9:51 PM

    Jets? Fifth round at most

  33. saintdatazz says: Mar 11, 2014 10:23 PM

He would fits best in Jawline but Denver is a good second. After the Byrd signing I say bronco/saint superbowl

  34. djachammer says: Mar 12, 2014 1:40 AM

Darren, Pierre, and Trade JG. Get what we can and get younger.

Drew Brees is a future HOFer . But lets face it. He has what 4 to 5 years left at the level he is at now.

At least have a team after he leaves. (Retired or too expensive to stay)
