Report: Wesley Woodyard lines up visit with Patriots

The Patriots have held the door open for free agent linebacker Brandon Spikes, and his potential replacement could be on his way in.

Via Tom Curran of, Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard is scheduled to visit the Patriots.

(Of course, now that word’s out, there’s always the chance he won’t make it.)

Woodyard is undersized but fast, and would definitely give the Patriots a different dynamic at the position than Spikes.

He had 15 tackles and a forced fumble against the Patriots in the regular season, and clearly made an impression.

There’s a reason he was benched this year.

Belichick likes to pursue free agents who’ve played well against the Patriots as his own team provides a solid baseline from which to evaluate the prospective player.

He was benched due to an injury he never fully healed from. Wesley is a great LB and a great team mate to have in the locker room and community. Any team would be fortunate to have him

    6ball just states the obvious.

Denver benched him at the end of the season. With as many injuries and problems on defense as they had, that’s really saying something.

Good coverage LB the Pats have sorely lacked lately. Special teams contributer as well. Would be an upgrade over Dane Fletcher.

Belichick likes players who can do multiple things. His speed can be utilized in the pass rush as well as dropping back in coverage, something Spikes and Hightower struggled in.

This could be a move for depth, Fletcher likely will stay in NE, Spikes is done.

I think the Patriots closed the door on Brandon Spikes during the playoffs last year. He is a two down back that can lay the wood but is lost in coverage.

There is ZERO chance Spikes will be a Patriot in 2014.

As a Bronco fan I would hate to see this happen. Wesley got hurt this year and was never able to return to full strength. That coupled with the strong play of Nate Irving and Danny T made it hard for him to slot back in. A captain in college, the NFL, and from what I can tell an intense competitor. Sad to see him go.

So proud of the Steelers. No one has more rings since the SB era began.

This guy has some game, though I’m not sure he’d start unless N.E. is running a 3-4. Mayo, Hightower and Jamie Collins seem like the sure starters.

sign him, he would be better then Brandon “no cover” spikes

He would be great addition to the team. What a lot of people are over looking is that He changed positions for the team. He is weak side backer and changed because Denver didn’t have anybody capable of playing the mike backer physically or mentally.
