Saints announce six-year deal with Jairus Byrd

Getty Images

On a day with few surprises relating to the signing of free agents, here’s a fairly big one.

The Saints have announced that former Bills safety Jairus Byrd has signed a six-year deal.

Byrd, who played in 2013 under the franchise tag in Buffalo, wasn’t expected to draw serious consideration from the Saints, in large part because the Saints have been dealing with salary-cap issues.

But G.M. Mickey Loomis and coach Sean Payton have found a way to get the deal done.  And a defense that got a lot better in 2013 (then again, the bar from 2012 was low) suddenly has gotten even better, with the addition of the No. 12 player on the PFT Free Agent Hot 100.

“but… but… the saints have no cap space!!” This is HUGE. Kenny AND Jairus? Wow. Now the early rounds of the draft can be focused on CB, WR, and Oline. Great job Loomis

But everyone in the post regarding his visit insisted that the Saints were unable to afford him, and that he was just going to New Orleans for funsies. What happened?

Awesome! I had some hopes when I heard about this but I didn’t want to possibly set myself up for disappointment. Will be interesting to see the details. Also curious what this means for La Puente, Strief, and if this means they have an idea about Graham’s contract.

WOW! Jairus Byrd AND Kenny Vaccaro… that’s as good a S duo as any in the league. Another shrewd move by Mickey Loomis that no one saw coming. #inloomiswetrust

Replace Jenkins with Byrd? Not overly impressed. Saints better hope Brees can still carry the team w/o Sproles, Moore, DeLaPuente, Strief and Pierre Thomas. Those are some good players. I foresee a serious step back.

  29. wnbasuperfan says: Mar 11, 2014 9:41 PM

As a Bills fan, I wish him the best.
Hopefully he’ll be successful playing for an aggressive DC in Rob Ryan.

  30. schmitty2 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:41 PM

Him and Vaccaro could end up being 2nd best safety duo in the league behind Thomas and Chancellor. Great signing by the Saints.

  31. bulletproof1997 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:41 PM

Lets see if he makes it through one season with his Plantar Fasciitis. I can’t believe the Saints gave him a massive 6 year contract to a injury prone safety. I guess Parker knows what hes doing after all, get paid and let the buyer worry about the money later.

  35. tmcb7 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:43 PM

How can a team that has no money under the cap sign one of the players demanding the most money?
I call BS unless they cut half their defense.
This proves the NFL/cap is a joke.

  36. distracted9 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:43 PM

Well that’s good for the Saints I guess.. I sure would have loved to have him in Philly, I just don’t see Jenkins being much of an upgrade over Chung.. I guess I will just trust that our front office knows more than me.

Packer fan get it through your skulls that ted thompson will never and mean never sign a free agent like jarius byrd that can get them over the top ..

He is the most overrated gm in football schnieder did all scouting when he was their..

It cracks me up ever year to hear about how ted will get the jarius byrd etc. Well at least the saints wont go down without a fight…

Good luck gb with that pathetic defense .. I’m not a viking troll just so sick of hearing about ted t and the offseason always the same leave it alone we will address the d problems again through the draft and be out in the first round ..

Great signing Saints. Only question is how you are going to pay Jimmy Graham the money he’s looking for?

  49. tmcb7 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:49 PM

The Saints had $1.9 million in cap space & $13 million in dead money.
And they sign the top safety in the league for 6 years?
What does this say about the cap?
To me, it says is BS.

  50. deezyny says: Mar 11, 2014 9:50 PM

  55. hockeyfan28 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:53 PM

  56. nowillrepeat says: Mar 11, 2014 9:54 PM

The Saints will pay Jimmy too, dont worry haters.

  57. kane337 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:54 PM

Get ready for some soon to be announced Saints cuts to pay this guy.

  58. computojon says: Mar 11, 2014 9:54 PM

Why is it called a 6-year contract when they can cut him after a year or two? The only important things are the guaranteed money and the time period for the guaranteed money. Everything else is just public relations to keep the fan base titillated.

  59. bleedingreen says: Mar 11, 2014 9:55 PM

Overrated. This deal will be a bust. Mark my words. Go ahead and click the dislike button 5 million times. He cant get out of his own way.

  60. jsp418 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:55 PM

Why would he want to play against his dad in Tampa bay?

  61. bucrightoff says: Mar 11, 2014 9:56 PM

Saints figured it out. Great as Drew Brees is, you still need a defense. And they have a very good one that just got better.

  62. iamwhodat says: Mar 11, 2014 9:56 PM

Hurt half the year? Injury prone? The man missed a total of 7 gamed in a 5 year career.

  63. kst2074 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:56 PM

As Skins fan I can see over reach and over paid

  64. redstar504 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:56 PM

That’s an odd signing and a break from character for the Saints who almost never get involved in the first wave of the F.A. period.

  65. jbeagles23 says: Mar 11, 2014 9:57 PM

I have a ton of respect for Byrd and what he can bring to any defence. I just don’t think this makes the saints much better considering their fire sale on offence. You do t get better by replacing 3 or 4 starters with one high price player

  66. kenny2neworleans says: Mar 11, 2014 9:57 PM

Waiting for someone to offer graham a contract so saints can get those two first rounders.

  69. west2south2east2north says: Mar 11, 2014 10:00 PM

Saints done it again. Whenever I think they don’t have the cap space do bring in an impact player they find a way to do it. I don’t care if they only have $2.00 of cap space left I am never doubting them again.

  70. flannlv says: Mar 11, 2014 10:01 PM

  74. mdd913 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:10 PM

I told everybody. I TOLD EVERYBODY. Every year you all say the Saints have no cap room, every year they keep signing major free agents. I TOLD YOU SO!!!

  75. binkystevens says: Mar 11, 2014 10:10 PM

Now if only they can win games on real grass in real weather, then they could actually earn some respect from the rest of the NFL.

  77. ravenmuscle says: Mar 11, 2014 10:11 PM

If it is true they only had $1.9 mil in cap space and $13 mil in dead money it just doesn’t add up unless they restructured every guy on their team.

Since my Ravens still have $16 million in cap space we should still land a few good free agents now that Cleveland and Miami shot their wads

Oh… I forgot about Oakland…but who wants to go to Oakland?

  78. garysturgis says: Mar 11, 2014 10:14 PM

Skins fans are sounding bitter….lololol We WANT him…but since we didn’t get him we will talk about him. Awwwww.

Work on making the post season.

    Geaux Saints….

  80. datdude84 says: Mar 11, 2014 10:40 PM

But but but the saints cut all of those guys only to sign graham. Said every expert and idiot including writwrs on this site. Wasnt a chance the saints cut those olayers only to sign graham. Salary cap? Yea the same cap that’s growing to around 160 mill in a year or so.. I think the way this deal was setup is goin to be key. I see an extension coming for brees very soon. Mickey loomis!!! Most underrated gm in football and continues to make couch gms eat their words. Welcome to nola byrdman!!!

  81. roylp says: Mar 11, 2014 10:41 PM

Lol Skins fan here. Yeah I wanted him, but not for 9 million a year. Good luck with that. Way to much money especially for a team that needs money to sign Jimmy.

  82. gadzod says: Mar 11, 2014 10:46 PM

How are they going to pay for Graham now? Who else will they have to cut to get to the cap?

  83. s0merand0mguy says: Mar 11, 2014 10:56 PM

I love all these butt hurt fans of these other teams that missed out on signing him. Leading up to today they all wanted him on their team. All of a sudden they act like they are glad he’s off the market and like he’s not that good…y’all sound like bitter women who got turned down for the prom.

  87. catquick says: Mar 12, 2014 12:53 AM

Didn’t Vaccaro tear up his knee last year? He may be a year away from full go. Byrd missed way more than 5 games in his career. He missed a lot more than that. He missed 6 alone last year, and sat out the end of year 2 with a torn groin. Where did that garbage come from? Byrd is slower than a lot of O linemen. 4.71 last I heard. That’s plodding in todays NFL. He can pick off the ball at times, other times he’s toasted. His feet are both bad, and getting older will not help. He didn’t practice half the time he played last year. You really better hope he doesn’t have a flare up and Vaccaro is ready, or else this will be the worst move by NO in decades, with no way out for at least 3 years.

  88. keepyerstickontheice says: Mar 12, 2014 1:08 AM

“Bills let Byrd and levitre walk. Unbelievable.”

Don’t worry, one has bad feet and the other has a bad knee. They won’t get far.

  89. torfino7 says: Mar 12, 2014 5:21 AM

Why add the caveat that the bar was low? They finished 4th in overall defense, regardless of how bad it was the year before. Having finished 4th, the jab at the prior year’s ranking just came across as a petty jab.

  90. mattryansnoodlearm says: Mar 12, 2014 9:09 AM

@ cat quick…Vacarro had a broken ankle not any type of knee injury. He will be ready to play week one. Take that to the bank. And say what you want but the Saints just upgraded at the FS position. IN LOOMIS WE TRUST.

  91. catquick says: Mar 12, 2014 10:06 AM

@mattryansnoodlearm…….not being a Saints fan, I didnt know the nature of Vaccaro’s injury, but a broke ankle is serious, especially for a guy who depends on quick cuts. My bank doesn’t cash your overreach Ing promises. You’ll find out the hard way Byrd is fire or ice. He’s damaged goods. 2 bad feet and a bad groin. Bills power pass rush(all time record) made him look good. Most of last year Bills fans wanted him gone. He may work out great. He may not. Thats a serious gamble. Makes for a coach killer(Ryan)

  92. catquick says: Mar 12, 2014 10:08 AM

Btw, mattryan……….you trust in Loomis all you want, I’ll stick with God. Loomis ain’t HIM.

  93. mattryansnoodlearm says: Mar 12, 2014 10:42 AM

Grow up cat, God doesn’t exist hahaha silly boy…and it was a hairline fracture man, he will be fine. And once again like I said it’s an upgrade over Malcolm Jenkins, you ever think he just gave up on the sad ass Bills?? And for the record our pass rush is pretty damn good as well…IN LOOMIS WE TRUST.

  94. yanksbills says: Mar 13, 2014 6:49 PM
