Ware plans to be selective, but to move quickly

Getty Images

Now that the Cowboys have cut defensive end DeMarcus Ware, he’ll have plenty of options.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Ware intends to be very selective about his next destination, but also to move quickly. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that six playoff teams already have called.

Ware spent the first eight years of his career in a 3-4 defense, playing outside linebacker. Last year, he moved to defensive end in a 4-3.

The 31-year-old pass rusher was due to earn $12.75 million in 2014. He’ll have to decide whether he wants to max out his earnings, or whether he hopes to position himself for the possibility of getting to the playoffs and maybe winning a game or two — something that hasn’t happened much during his time in Texas.

Vastly overrated player. Too bad Jerrah was smart for once and let him go. Ware FEARS Trent Williams. #OrakpoisthebestpassrusherinFootball

He’s thinking…. “I’ll sign in Afghanistan before I play for the pathetic vikings”

  5. bewaredware says: Mar 11, 2014 7:12 PM

I’m not sure how this will go. The Ware that played the last two years, while showed heart, didn’t bring a whole lot to the table

  6. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 11, 2014 7:12 PM

I say he should go to max out his earnings, and then join a contender later on when that team decides to cut ties.

  7. chaseutley says: Mar 11, 2014 7:13 PM

Wanna stick it to Jerry? Sign with Philly.

  8. donnymacjack says: Mar 11, 2014 7:13 PM

I’d say come to Seattle but he’d likely want too much playing time. We rotate guys to keep the mileage low on them so they can handle the bloody battles within our division.

Wish Ware the best of luck, but this was the right decision for the Cowboys. Sad to see him go, but they can do more good for the team with a few players for that money than tying it all up in a Demarcus Ware that can no longer stay healthy and that, while he plays hurt and I respect the heck out of that, just can’t be counted on like he once was.

  10. pioniere says: Mar 11, 2014 7:13 PM

    Come to Buffalo.

  11. derekgorgonstar says: Mar 11, 2014 7:14 PM

I’m a Cowboys fan, and DeMarcus was a class act, but, in all honesty, very few of his many sacks came when the Cowboys needed them most. Remember all those one-and-done elimination games Dallas lost? Do you remember him making any big plays?

Hate to say it, but it’s true – Charles Haley was a much better player when it mattered than Ware, and he had half the number of career sacks.

  12. purplepanteez says: Mar 11, 2014 7:14 PM

    Ware’s got no rings.

    Neither do my Vikings.

    Let’s dance!

Come to Minny and continue your winless streak.. and ours!

Don’t worry. We’ll pay you big bucks to not win. Just ask Greg Jennings.

A short term rental in GB – opposite Clay in our 3-4

Have to admit that if he can be had at a good price – one that allows him to contend instead of max earn, Green Bay definitely offers him a chance to play into January with better then average odds of a Super Bowl.

Real pass rush on this defense and with what Aaron can do with Cobb back, it has to be tempting.

Ted better be feeling him out – just a little bit.

  20. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Mar 11, 2014 7:18 PM

It’s best for both sides. Ware has been a good leader and locker room guy but he is a OLB and it will be best for him to go to a 3-4 defense. Probably extends his career.

Jerry got it right by cutting him and now seeking a true 4-3 DE. And I don’t say that very often.

  33. elway6532 says: Mar 11, 2014 7:44 PM

Too bad he doesn’t move that fast after the ball is snapped anymore.

Another aging vet Elway will try to hitch to the Manning bandwagon heading for a cliff.

I hear Kevin Green is available too. Him and Bruce Smith would make a mighty duel.

Maybe horse face can cut Von Miller to make room for Kevin Green- after cutting Decker to keep Wee Willie Welker

  35. Shinnbone says: Mar 11, 2014 7:49 PM

Let’s see here a 31 year old free agent Defensive superstar on the market…..DeMarcus do your do diligence and research it…does the name Reggie White mean anything to you? 1993 I saw it play out and he won a Super Bowl. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if he went to the Packers. It’s a need for GB and a SB contender with a superstar QB just as was the case in ’93. The only difference is this team is set to win now.

  36. sportsnut101 says: Mar 11, 2014 7:51 PM

A young defense in need of veteran leadership in the NFC will come a calling…Perhaps the Eagles although I can see this man going to Atlanta and attempting to help them quickly get back to respectability and offer some leadership to that pathetic D or perhaps Arizona as well. Two teams I can see DWare landing and providing great leadership and value even if the numbers don’t add up.

  40. mattyheisman says: Mar 11, 2014 8:02 PM

I agree that Ware’s cap hit was excessive but they’re willing to keep Miles Austin at 8.75 mil hit? As usual the cowboys are making questionable moves. Nevermind the Romo contract, maybe the worst qb contract besides Flacco’s

  41. vikescry1 says: Mar 11, 2014 8:03 PM

  50. whatjusthapped says: Mar 11, 2014 9:28 PM

For those suggesting he might look at the Packers, no chance.

Ted Thompson doesn’t go for older players, doesn’t pay big contracts and doesn’t go after injury prone players and Ware is all 3.

  51. kowboykrib says: Mar 11, 2014 10:03 PM

Sad to see him go…so many great seasons prior to 2012. But you could just see the mojo draining away the last two seasons. I think it was speed, he didn’t have that burst anymore. Offensive ends were able to hold him off like he was a mere mortal. It was a good run, but hardcore Cowboys fans knew the time had come…unfortunately.

  52. drdavid7 says: Mar 12, 2014 4:07 AM

Ware is a classy man. I’ve met him. Its funny how the Philly fans all talk about smashing and hurting Dallas. Is there any wonder why they have a jail in their stadium? Angry and belligerent as always. Funny how they see it as a compliment and everyone else in America sees them….differently
