Brandon LaFell visits New England

The Patriots need help at wide receiver, and they may get it in the form of Brandon LaFell.

LaFell is visiting New England today, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound LaFell has played his entire four-year career in Carolina. Last year he started all 16 games for the Panthers and caught a career-high 49 passes for 627 yards and five touchdowns.

LaFell is the No. 82 player in our Free Agent Hot 100.

Well that should take away the sting of the Talib fiasco (eye roll)

  2. patriotsarespygaters says: Mar 12, 2014 9:39 AM

    lol patriots are really cheap

  3. wfederal says: Mar 12, 2014 9:40 AM

Haha. I thought you guys were looking for receivers that could actually catch. I will feel really bad for you guys if you sign him. We definitely won’t miss him.

  4. patriotsprospectus401 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:40 AM

They do need a guy who can streach the field.

  5. qdog112 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:41 AM

NE should send a thank you note to Gettleman. LaFell is a viable WR2 or WR3 for a team with a well developed passing strategy. I believe NE has that.

I think Carolina made a mistake. I think he could get 5-7 targets per game with Brady.

  6. eagleswin says: Mar 12, 2014 9:42 AM

Some team is going to get a bargain in Edelman.

  7. bostonian13 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:44 AM

This is the same patriots team who made it to the Super Bowl without Talib. Keep bashing the Patriots but with a few moves here and there, you guys will admire them (like always) come playoffs next season. We need a guy to stretch the field and take attention away from the slot guys. Not a big name but something decent.

  8. btellington says: Mar 12, 2014 9:46 AM

LaFell has disappeared at times, and he has dropped the easy ones. But he’s also shown a knack for making a big play, and he’s an outstanding blocker. He would do well in a Brady offense.

  9. patriotinvasion says: Mar 12, 2014 9:46 AM

I like this better than Edelman. Better outside the numbers compliment to Amendola and Gronk along with Dobson. He was pretty good last year with Cam and has good size.

Belichick – “Here Brandon, take this pen and sign this contract to play for the Pats.”

    LaFell – (drops pen)

Another awesome free agent season for the Pats. Low ball Edelman. No shock there.

Our owner has stated he is proud that we get in the playoffs every year. How proud is Buffalo that they got there four times in a row and never won one?

These guys need to be called out. Unless they sign Revis and another name, this will be more of the same bargain basement shopping.

  12. dtc401 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:51 AM

I would rather have Decker playing in NE

  13. jcmeyer10 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:52 AM

Not a bad idea. Love it or hate it the Pats stick to their strategy for the most part.

The Adalius Thomas signing resonates today with how they deal with free agency.

  14. 4allintensivepurposes says: Mar 12, 2014 9:53 AM

Marvin McNutt is now your top receiver in Carolina.

  15. keltictim says: Mar 12, 2014 9:54 AM

It would be interesting to see what he can do with an elite passing qb. Cam is good, but he is not an elite passer.

  16. Gordon says: Mar 12, 2014 9:55 AM

How much longer can these guys shop in the bargain bin and stay competitive?

  17. tedmurph says: Mar 12, 2014 9:56 AM

Lose Edelman(probably) and sign Lafell. Brady must be chompin at the bit with all the weapons the Pats have provised the last couple yrs. TOwens or Ochocinco could probably be had on the cheap.

  18. ez4u2sa says: Mar 12, 2014 9:59 AM

Watch carefully. The Patriots are not going to overpay for a fragile, but talented, player like Talib. They also understand that the success Edelman had last year was largely due to the fact that he was the only veteran receiver that stayed healthy all year. Gronkowski, Amendola and the three rookies all missed a lot of time. When Gronkowski was back, the number of targets for Edelman dropped significantly. The Pats will definitely upgrade at wideout and they’ll replace Talib as well.

  19. Patskrieg dot com says: Mar 12, 2014 10:07 AM

Ugh. No. On what planet does LaFell even make the Patriots roster?

  20. flash1283 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:07 AM

Why do people (PFT reader) always over react to these threads? Just because they bring him in does not mean they are going to sign him.

So the should sign Welker and Talib?

Got it…lock up $12 Million for Welker over 2 years. Even though Edleman was cheaper and proved to be the right move half way through the 2013 season. Looks like BB made the right call on letting Welker go.

And now you are saying that BB should have locked up a guy that has had on and off the field issues that lead to the Bucs getting rid of him.

A guy that can’t stay healthy? A guy that is a very good player.

But Belichick should have locked up $57 Million into a CB that is NOT healthy and has legitimate concerns prior in the NFL.

Cool. Let’s see how the Broncos look in 2 years.

How is Mike Wallace fat contract looking for Miami the past year?

And Mario Williams big contract in Buffalo? What’s up with that?

  22. buffalo12thman says: Mar 12, 2014 10:10 AM

As a Bills fan, it’s always good to see the division get weaker. I think that the Pat’s front office has made some mistakes in the last few seasons on the personnel front and that it’s got to eventually catch up with them.

That said, it sucks knowing the hole my team dug is so deep that I still don’t see us getting over the “Brady hump” this season. ……..Sigh…….

  23. prussian11 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:12 AM

Best catch percentage in four years was 57% … last year.
Watched him drop a TD pass standing flat foot and alone in the end zone last year. Then actually “caught” his helmet when he realized how bonehead that was. How do you do that in the NFL?

On the bright side … I was going to drop him from my fantasy team. Now someone will likely think he actually has value and I can trade him for a bag of donuts instead.
(Although I might actually need to run the risk he does “better” since my WRs are so bad on that team. Bag-o-Donuts … Ouch.)

  24. rc33 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:13 AM

Denver’s gonna find out about Talib’s hip soon enough.
$26M guaranteed for a guy that was dealt for a 4th round pick a year and a half ago is laughable. Total overpay and all that guaranteed cash will haunt ’em in a season or two.
And with Beadles, Decker, Rogers-Cromartie, Wes Woodyard, etc.. leaving, it’s not as if they’re not taking any hits.

  25. jetsfan67 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:21 AM

Pats are quietly becoming a non factor this season. They are a non factor since spygate.

  26. rickywatts80 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:24 AM

Never has been good. Never will be. Just a guy.

  27. trollhammer20 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:29 AM

So they are cutting Smith and LaFell is a FA….who is playing WR for the Panthers next year?

  28. neilpountney says: Mar 12, 2014 10:31 AM

There is always a sense of frustration being a Patriots fan at this time of year, its seems our rivals are making great signings and we are losing some of our better players. That said this team is consistently among the top 3/4 teams each and every year and that has to count for somethings. I would point out to people who call them “Cheap” to look at how much Cap space this team has, there is not a lot of room for a major signing that because they ARE NOT Cheap they pay good money deeper than most teams, its called a system and it seems to work pretty well in my book!

  29. homelanddefense says: Mar 12, 2014 10:36 AM

You Patriots haters are amazing. A non factor since spygate? They have been to two superbowls, and 4 AFC Championship games since then. They had an undefeated regular season since spygate. Hate a team all you want, but at least make some damn sense with it.

  30. ironyisadeadscene says: Mar 12, 2014 10:53 AM

Haha, stupidity comes early this year……you retards usually don’t start crowing about how the Pats and Brady are “done” until after the draft

Dave Gettleman will line up at WR, LT, CB, SS and GM. He’s also in charge of the daily Krispy Kreme run.

  32. beachsidejames says: Mar 12, 2014 10:58 AM

Not gong to the superbowl with this guy and to say cam is not an elite qb is dumb. Cam is only getting better with time on his side.

Free Agency Rule #1: Don’t overpay for “Names”.

I think the Patriots do very well in this regard.

  35. pantherfan294 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:08 AM

Enjoy LaDrops in New England. He’s a solid run blocker but at best probably a #3/4 receiver. Pats might be shifting to run more.

  36. infectorman says: Mar 12, 2014 11:10 AM

they’ve been a factor embarrassing the Not-Yets for over a decade now.

Your comment is dripping w/irony coming from a fan of the Butt-Fumble-Foot-Fetish team.

Bahaha! Jets fans. You gotta laugh

  37. ddarlak says: Mar 12, 2014 11:16 AM

During the schmooze session, don’t hand LaFell a drink. He’ll spill it all over Kraft’s $10,000 suit.

  40. ugadogs21 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:38 AM

I guess no DB in the AFC East will sleep tonight. If they sign him I’m on the first plane to Foxboro and Patriot OTAs, Willie “May” Hayes style.

  41. pantherpro says: Mar 12, 2014 11:52 AM

As a Panther fan Lafell is weak. Good riddance

  42. Frazier28/7 says: Mar 12, 2014 12:09 PM

Jerome Simpson could be a steal for new england with tom brady throwing him the ball.

  43. sluggo65 says: Mar 12, 2014 12:14 PM

You dont win Suprerbowls in free agency. Way over rated. The only good free agents that are signed are the ones a team resigns. Not a Pats fan, but if a team doesn’t want to offer one of its own a big contract, who would better know his value??

  44. trollaikman8 says: Mar 12, 2014 12:29 PM

I wonder if they try to convince Tony Gonzales to join. For the league minimum of course.
