Browns cut Brandon Weeden

Getty Images

Brandon Weeden’s days in Cleveland have come to an end, officially.

The Browns announced on Wednesday afternoon that Weeden has been released.

Weeden, a first-round draft pick in 2012, has been a major disappointment while playing for a dysfunctional Browns franchise. He was a disappointment as a 15-game starter his rookie year and was every bit as bad in his second season, in 2013, when both Brian Hoyer and Jason Campbell were more effective running the Browns’ offense than Weeden was.

Although the Jaguars were able to finagle a sixth-round pick from the 49ers for Blaine Gabbert, Weeden wouldn’t even attract that kind of compensation. The Browns won’t get anything for him.

Now the question is whether Weeden can catch on anywhere else. Some team might let him compete for a backup job, but just two years after he was a first-round draft pick, it’s entirely possible that Weeden has thrown his last NFL pass.

Feel bad for the guy, but not for the Browns. Bad idea to make him a first round draft choice from the start. Chris Weinke was a bust too. And that was only a couple years ago.

    Good luck, Brandon.

Sad thing about the Gabbert trade is that Weeden is better, but that is not saying much. On another note, i have never seen a QB hold on to the ball as long as this guy did.

  16. kosarkid says: Mar 12, 2014 3:57 PM

    Favorite Weeden memories

    1) getting trapped under the giant american flag before his first game.
    2) The Flail Mary against Detroit that will go down as the worst pass ever thrown in the NFL.
    3) the ESPN special with Weeden taking down clay pigeons with the football

  17. meatcarroll says: Mar 12, 2014 3:57 PM

More batted down passes at the line of scrimmage than Russell Wilson. Weeden is 6’5″, Wilson is 5’10”.

  18. steelerben says: Mar 12, 2014 3:57 PM

Well, at least whatever QB they take in the first round this year knows they’ll only have to play in Cleveland for two years max.

  19. lightcleric says: Mar 12, 2014 3:57 PM

I was going to say it’s kind of hard for a guy to really catch on when he’s already 30 years old, but Josh McCown did pretty well at 37 after being an almost career backup, so you never know….

  20. 80sbroncofan says: Mar 12, 2014 3:57 PM

2 first round draft picks in the 2012 draft and neither one is on the team. Factory of sadness at its best.

The fact that Gabbert at least drew some compensation, should tell you everything you need to know about this guy. Holmgren drafted this guy and Colt McCoy. I guess the Browns are starting to figure it out.

    In recent years,

Yet, he took his team to the playoffs and won it.

    Before I was born…

Buffalo Bills cut middle linebacker Tom Cousineau, after drafting him with the #1 overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft. Cousineau was cut after the two sides failed to come to terms on a contract.

  40. rymurphy617 says: Mar 12, 2014 4:06 PM

Thats what the Browns get for drafting a 43 year old QB. They have to roll the dice again in the draft for a 1st round rookie, luckily they stole Indys pick. JEEEZE. Sign Revis and pray your already solid D can score 3 Td’s a game.

  41. hoopieguy says: Mar 12, 2014 4:07 PM

I think it’s hilarious how so many people on here just love to bash C-town, when there are at least 24-25 other teams in the NFL that are just as bad and make the same bone-head decisions. Just sayin………..

  42. urbusted2 says: Mar 12, 2014 4:10 PM

Weeden showed flashes of brilliance. Gordon being out the first four games hurt. He held the ball too long, always wanting to make the big play with the strong arm. I never saw the ability to adapt. I wish him well.

I sense the end of the term “rebuilding” in Cleveland for a good while. Solid pick-ups on D in free agency and lots of picks in this draft (more than likely to be directed towards the offense)…this team is on the rise. I was happy to see the Browns logo in the “in the hunt” category when the playoff picture was presented in November. I can’t wait to see what this year brings. GO BROWNS!! It’s been WAY too long!!

  58. SmashMouthFootball says: Mar 12, 2014 4:24 PM

Well on the bright side Cleveland with that offense your defense will be on the field a lot and give you the best chance of scoring.

Jokes aside…if he worked with Norv Turner and he has anything worth working with, it’s a heckava lot better than Christian Ponder…I mean, Weeden can throw for more than 61 yards a game, but then again, so could my 5 yr. old.

  65. 4512dawg4512 says: Mar 12, 2014 4:33 PM

It would be nice to see my fellow Browns fans show a little more class. The Browns chose Weeden, he didn’t choose them. He did set the rookie record for passing yards in Cleveland on a team that was #2 in the league in dropped passes. Thats not bad. A questionable run game, a banged up O-Line that got all three of their QB’s injured, well Hoyer kind of did it to himself and of course Greg Little having balls bounce off his chest. Not to mention a front office with dumpster fires all over the place that, in typical Browns fashion, was quick to hit the panic button and start throwing back up QB’s in. If you look through the windshield rather than at it you’ll see that Weeden was not the problem and we still have several problems but you wont see them ON the field on Sundays. I hope Weeden goes to a team with stability and that will appreciate his potential. And I hope the Browns clean up their own mess before they end up throwing another possible franchise QB under the bus.

  66. bensstinkyfingers says: Mar 12, 2014 4:34 PM

Maybe he can land in Cincinnati as Dalton’s backup. Ginger twin powers activate, in the form of one Qb. who can get past first round of playoffs. Good luck weeds you kinda got a raw deal like most of the past Browns Qb’s having to start over with new systems every other year and little offensive weapons.

  72. pftking says: Mar 12, 2014 4:42 PM

I said it before and I’ll say it again, the Browns are stupid as hell for taking a 28 year old quarterback in the first round. Wheedon would’ve been there for them in the 3rd.

  78. jonevans511 says: Mar 12, 2014 4:53 PM

If you’re not a Browns fan, you really should watch what you say. Weeden is a better QB, person (based on the fact he’s never badmouthed a teammate or other player in public, unlike you clowns), and athlete than all of you. Oh yeah, and this “bust” made more over the course of 3 weeks than most of you do in a year. I give Browns fans a pass because I 100% understand their frustration (assuming you spend money to follow your team in some form).

Keep your head up Brandon. As a Skins fan I’ve watched many QBs struggle, but the fact remains there are only a handful of “great” qbs anyways. You did what you could on the field, pursued your dream, and saw it through until the end. Not to mention, the Browns were not on the cusp of greatness before drafting you, so I think it goes without saying their ineptitude is not your fault.

Your achievements far outweigh anything these these burger-flipping idiots on PFT have achieved athletically. Unlike you, who holds his head high despite a tough couple years, these clowns are so desperate for attention/acceptance they’ll start drafting a comment, delete it, and end up writing something they hope other people will “thumb up”.
