Buccaneers agree to two-year deal with Josh McCown

AP

Josh McCown now has his chance to start.

Which could be the start of something else for his new team.

McCown’s agent Mike McCartney just tweeted out word that his client had agreed to a new two-year deal with the Buccaneers.

After his steady play last year with the Bears, McCown earned another chance to start after it appeared his career had stalled at journeyman backup.

But with the only competition for the job Mike Glennon, that is not the case.

Now, McCown might need to get recruiting. He’s close friends with soon-to-be-former Panthers wideout Steve Smith (they were actually playing in the same flag football game the day Smith broke his wrist), and might want to lure his pal down to Tampa as soon as the Panthers do the expected.

  1. Good luck, Josh.
Really – he’s the ultimate team player.
But Tampa realizes that Trestman and the Bears’ offensive weapons aren’t coming with him, right?

  2. Sorry to see you go Josh. Good luck in Tampa, you are going to need it. Especially when you come back to Soldier Field in the regular season this year.

  3. Good luck to him. Almost ashame. He gets his chance at a starting job….on an awful team with no weapons.

Even if he can recruit Smith, this isn’t 5 years ago. I’d still take Smith on my team, but he’s not a #1 anymore

  4. Josh,

You were the ideal teammate and role model. All Bears fans appreciated your contributions on and off the field. You will be definitely missed.

    Good luck,
    Bears fans everywhere

  5. I’m glad that McCown is likely getting a lot more money than the Bears were offering, but not sure how good of a move this is for the Bucs. He played great for Bears who have a ton of offensive weapons and a decent line (still seems weird saying both of those), something that the Bucs don’t have. McCown is excellent at using the tools around him, but doesn’t make the skill position players around him better.

Plus he’s going to play for Lovie, a man who hates offense so much he even tries to prevent his own from playing well.

  6. Josh McCown is good friends with…Steve Smith?!
    Quite the odd couple.

The Bears should’ve re-signed McCown for about $3-4 mill a year instead of the ridiculous and asinine $20mill a year they gave Cutler after a season where he missed 5 games, was outplayed by McCown, and lost to the Packers yet again when it mattered most. With the money they saved they could upgrade the putrid defense, as well as pay Hester the $2mill or so it would’ve taken to keep him around and help them with their field position – he was still a good returner last year.

  7. Glad to see the Bucs sign anyone over the dog murdering Vick. Now if we can some how snag Aaron Murray in a later round of the draft our QB stable would be pretty good. Still hope Glennon wins the job though.

  8. McCown has been a career bust, up until last year in Trestman’s system with the Bears. Hopefully the Bucs get last years guy & not the guy who was lucky to be a 3rd stringer his whole career.

  9. Lots of players have close friends on other teams. That does not mean Steve Smith ends up in Tampa. My money is still on Steve Smith wearing purple and black next year. Baltimore is much closer to the SB than TB.

  10. Wow. That’s a lot of cash. Josh is a nice guy and you got to root for him but this is out of line money. He benefitted last year from great WRs, a solid line and RB, a play caller who put him in good position and some pourous opponent D’s who dropped some picks.

I’d like to have him as a fill-in for a few games while your starter’s out but he is not a 16 game QB. Data and trends don’t lie.

  11. Dear Lovie,

Please do not run Josh into the ground like you did every other quarterback while you were with Chicago. He’s a good dude.

    Signed,

    Chicago Bears Fans

  12. maybe Lovie will do Glennon a favor and trade him to the Bears where he will learn from a coach who knows offense is part of the game. he would give Trestman a quality young QB to develop and be the starter for the future. it would be a shame to see that potential wasted in smith’s get off the bus running philosopy. nice mccown gets a starting job and over paid based on 5 games out of a 12 year career.

  13. Does this mean that we’ll be looking at one of the QB’s in round 1? McCown is solid but not a long term solution.

  14. Doug Martin, Lavonte David and Mike Glennon make less then $3 million combined in 2014 salary. All these signings are going to make an awkward locker room situation or some hold outs.

  15. Seems like an ideal spot for McCown. Good chance to be the starter. Good weather. Good coach. Should be at least a decent defense. Decent O-Line. A good WR, TE, and three quality RBs. Not to mention a top ten pick. They could win some games this year and I expect them to be in the hunt for a playoff birth. But with that division and that conference they likely won’t get in. The only drawback I can see to him going to Tampa are the hideous new uniforms.

  16. Bears fans just seem upset they signed Cutler to a contract for 4 times as much annually…No weapons for McCown? How about Vincent Jackson (78 catches, 1200 yards) and Tim Wright (500 yards, 5 TD’s) last year with Glennon throwing to them. Add in Mike Williams who went for 1000 yards and 9 TD’s in 2012, the recently signed Brandon Myers and a healthy Doug Martin. Oh and they have the #7 pick in the draft which will probably be Watkins or Evans. Ya Josh will have plenty of weapons in Tampa.

  17. I feel like Tampa makes huge moves every season and it all crumbles by week 6. Lovie wont let them crumble but i cant see any of these moves helping Tampa make playoffs considering they will have to play 6 games against the Saints secondary, a healthy Hotlanta and Cam’s boys in Carolina. These moves take Tampa out of the pile of teams that are a joke and makes them semi-competitive but 8 wins is a super bowl ring for Tampa this year.

  18. Tampa is going to Be the KC of last year. Just look at all the pro bowl players, and now they have a coach…All yeah six Pro bowlers and others that up and coming. Keep hating!!!

  19. Good luck making it through the draft without being joined by another QB, Josh. Only then will your spot be relatively safe.

With the Bears, everything good you gave them was icing on the cake. The Bucs fans seem to think they have something close to a winner. You won’t get the same goodwill & patience there.

I hope you do well and are happy.

  20. It’ll be interesting to see how well he does outside of the system that he succeeded in this past season.

  21. Yall sound dumb as hell. Tampa STILL has no qb, they pass on an mvp like Vick for this scrub?! Lol, silly rabbits tricks are for kids.

  22. Good luck to Josh…Coach Trestman should be getting a pretty large fruit basket.

Solid back up QB for Tampa, which means Lovie will have’em starting game one.
